Atopic eczema is a skin disease that has increased radically in recent decades. About 15-20% of all Finns suffer from atopic symptoms during life, some of them developing chronic eczema. Atopic eczema is characterized by red, dry, itchy areas on the body. Since the disease has no cure, it is important to understand the mental and emotional stresses that the disease causes.
Purpose: The aim of the study is to increase understanding of young adults' feelings and experiences of living with atopic eczema. Issues that the study undergoes are: How is atopic eczema experienced? How can a person support and educate people in need of support?
The study was conducted as a qualitative document study, which describes the experiences of atopic eczema by female blogs through content analysis. The informants are five women between 18-35 years old who write openly about atopic eczema on their blogs. Theoretical starting points used in the study are Katie Eriksson's theory of suffering and Dorothea Orem's self-care theory.
Results: Atopic eczema was perceived as limiting in everyday life. The informants were adversely affected both physically, psychologically and socially. Feelings associated with atopic eczema were often of a negative nature. The informants described an emotional suffering sometimes associated with the response from the environment.
The informants experienced bad experiences with healthcare contacts. Support and education do not work optimally from the patient's perspective.
