Abstract
Through the ages, people have had different motives for travelling around the world. Young people are a growing group of travelers and therefore constitutes a group of pioneers in tourism. They travel to destinations that have not yet become popular to the public. And with this, it is essential for small businesses in these destinations to know what motivates young backpackers to backpack. By exposing themselves to new situations and learning new skills, generation Y wants to develop during their travels. The aim of this work is to explain what motivates generation Y to backpack and the factors that affect the decision to do so. The target group for the survey is Finnish young people aged 18-26 years, who have backpacked for at least two months. The author uses a qualitative approach in the form of focus group interviews because the goal is to get deeply into the respondents ' thoughts on what motivates them to backpack. All in all, the study involved 10 people who are distributed in three focus groups. The material of the study is based on different motivational theories and theory of generation Y. As main references the writer uses Holloway & Humphreys motivational process (2012), McIntosh motivational theory (1995) and Swarbrooke & Horner's (2007) material on consumer behaviour in tourism. The results of this study show that generation Y is motivated by discovering new places and cultures in a spontaneous way, get in contact with cultures, find themselves, gain new experiences and meeting new people. Although the respondents are motivated by the same motivators, has their process to that point been personal, such as their life situations. Different life situations as well as past experiences and attitudes have been different for the respondents but still have led to that they are motivated by essentially the same motivators. There is no remarkable difference between the sexes or age regarding what motivates respondents to backpack. The results of this study are not representative of the entire generation Y but gives an insight into what motivates Finnish youths to backpack.
