This Bachelor´s Thesis is part of the project “Undocumented-not wanted 2018? Expected results from the project is to increase knowledge, in the social- and healthcare section, of the undocumented people`s situation, through practical methods and associated instructions. The purpose of the thesis is to study why the undocumented and those at risk to become illegal migrants, are turning to the church and the motives of conversion. The questions for the thesis are “Why are so many refugees turning to church and want to convert?” and “What does conversion to Christianity mean to a refugee?” The thesis aim is to help professionals, the collegium and society to understand the phenomenon of conversion to decrease prejudices and misunderstandings.
To meet the purpose of the thesis, a qualitative survey was made. A content analysis was made of narrative literature and interviews with 7 convertites. The results show that getting asylum easier could be a reason to turn to the church. On the other hand, there are also other reasons for conversion, such as feelings of fellowship in church, and an awakened faith from the heart. The consequences of conversion include feelings of peace, safety and fellowship. Many converts, on the other hand, have also suffered exclusion from community and also threats, harassment and violence from other Muslims. Whatever the motives are it’s not an easy decision for the refugees to convert from Islam to Christianity.
