Tiivistelmä
Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tutkia mitä koti merkitsee kehitysvammaiselle asukkaalle asuntola ympäristössä. Tutkimuksella pyrittiin tuomaan kodin merkitys esille kehitysvammaisten itsensä kokemana. Mitkä asiat ovat kodissa tärkeitä? Kokevatko he asuntola ympäristön kodikseen ja jos eivät koe, niin mikseivät? Miten asuntolaympäristöä voisi vielä kehittää tai parantaa, että se tuntuisi vielä enemmän kodilta? Miten asukkaiden osallisuus ja itsemääräämisoikeus näkyvät arjessa?
Tutkimusmenetelmäksi valittiin laadullinen tutkimus ja se toteutettiin yksilö haastatteluna kesällä 2018. Tutkimukseen haastateltiin seitsemää kehitysvammaista asukasta. Taustatietojen lisäksi haastateltavilta kysyttiin asumisen historiasta ja kodin sisällöstä ja merkityksestä sekä osallisuudesta ja itsemääräämisoikeudesta.
Tutkimuksen tulosten mukaan kodin sisältöön katsottiin kuuluvan muut asukkaat, kodin henki sekä omat tärkeät tavarat ja esineet kuten valokuvat. Myös kodin ympäristö ja se missä koti sijaitsee, oli haastateltavien mielestä kodin sisältöön vaikuttava tekijä. Tärkeäksi koettiin myös itsemääräämisoikeus.Kodissa merkityksellisiä asioita olivat vapaus kulkea ja se, että kotona saa olla oma itsensä. Työ, harrastukset ja arjen rutiinit olivat tärkeitä ja yhdessä tekeminen.
Tutkimuksen tulokset vahvistivat, että asuntola ei tuntunut kodilta sen asukkaille eikä siitä käytetty nimitystä koti. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the significance of home to mentally disabled person in a residential home environment. A goal within the study was to bring out the significance of home in experience oneself , by mentally disabled persons own words. Which matters are important in home? Do they feel that residential home environment is their home, and if they don’t feel so, why not? How can residential home be proven, that it could feel even more like a home to them? How does the residents involvement and self-determination shows out in their every day life?
A qualitative study was chosen as a research method and it was carried out as a individual interview, in summer 2018. Seven mentally disabled residents were interviewed to this study. In addition to questions about ones background, interviewees were asked about the history of their housing, the content of and the significance of home and also their involvement and self-determination.
According to the results of this study the content of home was seen to include other residents, spirit of the home and important things and belongings like photographs. Also the environment of the home and the location of the home was an important factor in the content of the home by interviewees. Residents self-determination were also considered as important factor. Significant matters in home were freedom to move and that in home one can be oneself. Work, hobbies, daily routines and doing things together, were also important things.
The results of the study strengthened that the residential home did not feel home to it`s residents and they didn`t call it home.
