Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaista tukea adoptioprosessin eri vaiheessa olevat pariskunnat saavat omilta läheisiltä ihmisiltään. Lisäksi oli tarkoitus selvittää olivatko he saaneet odottamaansa tukea ja millaista tukea he olisivat kaivanneet. The aim of this diploma project was to clarify what kind of support couples get from their friends and relatives during different stages of adoption. Also intention was to find out that did they actually get the support they wanted and what kindof support they expected. The project was done in cooperation with regional office of Save the Children Finland. The research was carried out as qualitative study. For information gathering, an inquiry was formulated and it was distributed via mail. Inquiry form containedopen-end questions. The answers from the inquiry were processed by analysis of the contents. The inquiry forms were sent to two different groups, for couples waiting for a child and for those couples who already had a child. Inquiry forms were sent randomly for those who had been given counseling concerning adoption at the regional office of Save The Children Finland between January 1st 2004 and December 31st 2006. 40 inquiries were sent, 20 for each group. The study showed that support is been given and it is needed. The support was not needed so greatly before the arrival of the child. The support was mainly listening, acceptance and after the arrival of the child, concrete assistance for example taking care of the child. The research also showed that the families consider support from the peer groups to be very important. On account of the research can be said that the support from the friends and relatives is important. Also can be stated that the friends and relatives are favorably inclined towards international adoption. The results of the research can be of assistance in adoption counseling. The challenge of development is to enable peer group support to anyone who has adopted or are about to adopt a child from abroad.
