Tutkimusosuus toteutettiin laadullisesti avoimien haastatteluiden avulla. Haastateltavat haettiin toimeksiantajan potilasverkostojen kautta, ja haastattelut toteutettiin toimeksiantajan tarjoamissa tiloissa. Haastattelujen analysoinnissa käytettiin sisällönanalyysiä. Analyysin seurauksena syntyneet luokat koottiin yhteen kuvioon.
The purpose of this thesis was to survey patients’ subjective experiences of what kind of support they have received and what kind of support they would have wished for after cancer treatments. The goal of this thesis was to offer knowledge for the commissioner of how the current forms of support correspond with patients’ experience of the need of support and patients’ wishes. The commissioner may freely apply the findings of this thesis for service design and influencing.
The theoretical framework consisted of information from national cancer treatment and rehabilitation plans, intern materials of patient organizations and international references. Research was made by using qualitative methods and open interviews. The interviewees were searched from the patient networks of the commissioner and the interviews were held in a space which the commissioner offered. The interviews were analyzed by using content analysis. After the analysis the categories were collected into a single graphic.
In the materials of the research, it was emphasized that the patients were aware of the available support, but often felt like they had to know to ask for if themselves. The patients especially hoped for more information about the late and long-term effects of cancer treatments and more concrete help and support for returning to work. The patients thought that the distinct challenge was the phase between the end of active treatments and returning to work, and the transfer of treatment responsibility related to that phase. The interviewees suggested as an improvement that there could be a coordinator who would meet the patient when treatments end and would help to obtain the support the patient needs and help in returning to work.
The research about cancer patients’ rehabilitation and return to work in Finland is scarce, and that is why there were no baselines from former studies. There are similarities with studies used in the theoretical part, but the thesis provided new information about the shortcomings in support and in the process of returning to work.
