Tiivistelmä
Sammandrag:
Abstract:
This survey is a qualitative study about how well patients’ autonomy is carried out in prehospital emergency situations by paramedics. In the study two prehospital simulations have been observed. The simulations have been performed by paramedic students.
The study's research questions are:
1. In which ways, do the paramedics take into consideration patient’s autonomy?
2. To which degree, has the patient the possibility to influence his or her care?
Katie Eriksson's Ethics about nursing and Ruth Purtilos Theories about interactions be-tween the care personnel and patients, have been chosen as theoretical frame of reference. The ethics of nursing excludes the general medical- or legal ethics within the field of healthcare. From an ethical perspective it is not enough to only follow vague laws regu-lated by the authorities. Because there are few ethical studies within the field of prehos-pital emergency care, more research is needed. The discussion in the prehospital field fo-cuses mainly on ethical problems such as in CPR or” triage” in catastrophes. This study emphasizes the weight to respect the patient's autonomy and demonstrates several exam-ples from other studies how much work still should be done in order to improve the pa-tient's position within the prehospital field. The conclusion of the study's observations are that the paramedics do a good job in view of the patient's care as a whole. Ethically there are nevertheless several details that should be taken better into consideration.
