The objective of this thesis was to study the branding strategies applied in Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen, to then be able to analyze and compare the brands and branding strategies between each city. With this research the purpose was to gather new and useful information that could be helpful for Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau.
The theoretical framework of the study introduces the brand concept, branding in general, branding destinations, brand identity, brand personality and image.
The approach of the study is qualitative as it is a desktop research. The material was obtained by e-mail from Copenhagen tourist organization and from Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau. Information was also accumulated from the homepages of the cities’ tourist organizations and also from other Internet sources that were relevant to the subject.
The key findings of this research reveal that these three cities all have the same kind of character because of their position in the north, for instance the same kind of society structure, climate and culture. The research shows the fact that these three cities are competing mostly on who is developing the brand in the most effective and interesting way in order to attract tourists, companies and other investors.
