Participation and social approach are key themes in the social pedagogical practice. The basic assumption of this thesis is that the elderly care is facing major changes in the near future. It is hoped that some of the socio-pedagogical ideals will have a greater role in the daily routines of the elderly care in the future. Themes of participation and social approach are two examples of where this development could get underway. Participation and social approach are two relatively foreign concept for the elderly. The concepts have no further room in the every day discussions at grass roots level among health professionals. To begin the development of more space in the right way, it felt still important to ask the main characters, the elderly themselves, what they thought of the terminology. The purpose of this work is to improve understanding of elderly people's own ideas of participation and social approach in an elderly care home. This order was executed by letting the elderly themselves talk about what the two concepts brought to mind with them. Key questions were: What does social approach mean to the elderly? What signifies a good treatment, according to them? What does participation mean for the elderly? How can the elderly feel involved in daily life at the elderly care home? The results show that older people had many thoughts on participation and social approach. They had much praise to give about everyday life in the elderly care home, as well as several suggestions for changes. Regarding social approach all of them expressed a great need to be seen as unique individuals and they clearly stated that all older people are different. A phenomenon that appeared throughout the different contexts in the interviews was time and lack of time. The informants told of situations where they had felt neglected because of the staffs lack of time. But they also talked about situations where they had felt very much cared for, situations where the staff wasn’t in a hurry to the next place.
