The starting point for this thesis is the study circle material ”Stödja äldre personer till att vara aktiv i vardagens sysslor”, made by occupational therapist Häggblom-Kronlöf (Ph.D.). The study circle was ordered by Äldrecentrum Österbotten to support home care staffs competency in client-centeredness and in supporting clients to engagement and participation in everyday activities. The purpose of this thesis is through a qualitative analysis of the discussions during two study circles and the answers in evaluation forms that participants completed afterwards, describe articipants' perceptions and understanding of the client's everyday life and how they support clients to engage and participate in everyday choirs. It also aims to show the home care staffs present state of knowledge regarding a client-centered approach.
The result shows that the home care staff sees daily activities as important for maintenance of activity capability, but daily activities also provides security, a sense of control and maintains the person's identity. The environment can be an aid or barrier to occupational performance. As insights in supporting clients to engage and participate in everyday activities, home care staff raise to the conclusion that it should be the client's interests that guides the selection of activities. Personnel need to understand both the client's abilities and the demands and opportunities of the activities and the environment. The organization, work culture and education are also factors that affect home care staffs opportunities to support the client to the engagement and participation in everyday activities. Home care staff notes that the study circle led them to think again about what client-centered really means. They point out that if you work client-centered it is the client's interests, her will and self-determination that should determine how and when everyday activities are performed. They express a need for professional development relating to the client-centered approach both in terms of ethical and practical approach. Home care staff stress that they also have limited knowledge regarding how to get consulting help of other professionals and information about which services are available in the community for the elderly.
