utmaningar i familjen. The purpose with this qualitative study was to investigate how midwives and public health care nurses in antenatal care work towards supporting the early interaction
between a newborn baby and its parents. This was done to acquire knowledge of the midwife’s way of working and to survey the methods used to empower the mutual interaction in the new family. The research questions of this study were how
the midwife supports the parents towards a good interaction with the infant and how she supports the man and the woman to a secure parental role in the new family life. The study was made inductively with semi-structured interviews as data
collection method. The material was analysed with qualitative content analysis.
The results showed that the midwife supports the interaction and well-being in the whole family by supporting, informing and encouraging the parents to good interaction. By guiding, giving response and being present she gives the parents
motivation and strengthens their confidence in the role as a parent. The midwife supports the parents in their communication with the baby, encourages closeness and eye contact as well as supports them in breastfeeding and in interpreting the signals from the baby. The home visit gives the midwife the opportunity to discover possible problems or challenges in the family. She observes the mother’s wellbeing
and the father’s participation to see the entirety and be able to support the interaction from different points of view, at the heart of things.
