Resultatet delades in i tre huvudkategorier: psykisk påfrestning, socialt nätverk och konsultering. This study is a qualitative content analysis of the need for psychosocial support for involuntary childlessness. The study is commissioned by, Tarja Gustafsson Family Therapist at Folkhälsan Family Counseling Unit at Åland.
The purpose of this study is to examine the need for psychosocial support of people suffering from infertility. Previous research, shows that infertility causes many different emotions such as: hope, sadness and anxiety which are very burdensome for the couple. Jean Watson's nursing theory (1993) is the theoretical framework for the study. The study explains her views of health and illness.
The study answered three questions: What is the need for psychosocial support of people suffering from infertility? Is involuntary childlessness experienced as a traumatic crisis? The method used in this study is qualitative content.
The results were divided into three main categories: psychological distress, social networking and consulting. The results revealed that infertility causes a mental exertion for the couple; where the emotional stress, traumatic stress and an existential crisis are most central. That the couple's social network may suffer from sociocultural factors and that copying strategies are something individuals need in order to adapt to the situation. The results revealed also that consulting is one of the key elements, necessary for the couple in order to use correct copying strategies.
