In my thesis I have chosen to discuss the B-foot joint, one of the three main pieces the modern western concert flute consists of. I will analyze the history of the B-foot joint – where and when it appears – and the problems that may occur when one changes from a C- to a B-foot joint. To be clear I have also given an account of the other existing foot joints and the other joints the flute consists of. The literature I have used while analyzing this field is for example “The Flute Book” by Nancy Toff and “The Flute” by Ardel Powell.
The subject I have chosen to focus on in my thesis is how the change from a C- foot joint to a B-foot joint affects the technique and the sound. To be able to do research on this subject, I had to use oral sources since there is no written literature on this area from before. I have been doing interviews and discussed with my colleagues and teachers, but also used my own experience as a source of information. The conclusion I’ve come through by doing this is that no one else can decide for another flutist which foot joint to choose. It is all a matter of what one wants from ones instrument, how one wants to express oneself and personal taste.
There are a few challenges, though, that one has to face if one decides to switch foot joints. The problem areas I have chosen to analyze further are how it affects the posture and the technique of the right hand pinky. One who starts playing with a B-foot joint must see to that the end of the flute does not start hanging because of the increased weight. This will probably happen before the muscles adjust to the higher weight. The fact that the right pinky has difficulties to adjust to the added clefs is natural and it will take its time to get used to the new position of the C-clef.
Which foot joint one chooses to play with is often determined by the sound qualities the foot joint in question possesses. It is natural that the sound differs, since the harmonics changes according to what tones that are available on the flute. Thus the sound of the B-foot joint is a bit darker and fuller in the second and third register than the sound of the C-foot joint.
