The aim of this thesis is to examine the effects on Indian children following their removal from a high-risk environment and placement into care homes with ac-cess to primary and secondary schooling. The study was conducted in cooperation with the aid organization El Shaddai Charitable Trust in India. The placement of a child through this organization also includes primary and secondary education for the child in the Shanti Niketan school, which is the organization’s own school. The study is based on four theme based, semi structured interviews where young adults working in the organization recounted their life stories. All of them were placed in the organization as children. The main research questions concern family circumstances and reasons for the placement of the child, consequences of the placement and resulting child-parent relationships. The theoretical perspectives are social inclusion and ecological systems theory. The results show that extreme poverty in combination with alcohol abuse and family violence is the most common reason for placement. Parents are positive in relation to the need for placing the child in the care homes of the organization. They have initially either contacted the organization themselves for help or have been visited by the organization’s field workers. Contact with the parents has been maintained throughout the placement. All respondents have continued educational studies after secondary school and emphasize the importance of education. In conclusion the significance of the placement is considered positive and a turning point for the respondents. They feel grateful to the organization and experience, indicating that through the placement they have been offered education, work and independence in life.
