The aim of this study was to create an understanding of the situation of unaccompa-nied children and their needs and highlight what kind of support and working methods counsellors working with them can offer. The questions were: 1. How can symptoms of traumatic experiences be expressed by unaccompanied children? 2. What are the needs of unaccompanied children and in what ways can counsellors work to to satisfy these needs? 3. What is the relationship between these working methods and social pedagogy? My theoretical framework consisted of children’s reactions to trauma, psy-chosocial support in working with unaccompanied children and social pedagogy. The study was conducted as a literature study and consisted of 11 relevant previous re-searches within the field. Inclusion criterias for my articles were that they were scien-tific, relevant, written between the years 2001-2012, available in fulltext and involving refugee children or refugees and trauma. The results of the study showed that what’s important in the work with unaccompanied children is to achieve security and stability where practical needs are satisfied and that the children have a trusting relationship with one professional, therapy to cure the traumatic experiences that the children have experienced and eventually that the children become integrated into the new society. Stability and confidence between the child and the professional must be attained be-fore treatment to process the trauma can begin. Creative methods can be used as a working method for treating traumatic experiences.
