The purpose of this thesis is to discuss different learning theories and their view on education. Ultimately, it is about the educator leading the child into the rule and norm system of the society and culture in question. The theoretical part describes some of the history of pedagogy, behaviorism and cognitivism and their view of the human being, knowledge, the child, and learning. I wanted to write about two different pedagogy approaches and point out two different ways to approach education. The theoretical part also describes the Finnish view of young children's education, based on information from Stakes.
The study is based on qualitative interviews with kindergarten staff. The study was conducted in order to see what kind of learning theory educators use in their work and then look back on the theoretical part and see if any of the pedagogic learning theories are used.
The result of the study shows that both behaviorism and cognitivism are learning theories used at these kindergartens. These pedagogic approaches are used to make the group work as a whole and to ensure that the individual child can learn and be safe. The routines of the kindergarten are planned according to the child's best interests and so that the children have an opportunity to develop and learn.
