According to the child welfare act, the Finnish municipalities are obligated to provide family work as a support measure for clients in the child welfare system. Family work may also be provided as a part of the municipality’s preventive care. The purpose of this study emerged from one of the main principles of family work: it has to be purposeful and you are working towards a goal. With this in mind, this study focuses on the profes-sional view of the participation of the child and parents, as well as the parents’ engage-ment in the work. The empowerment orientated perspective is a central part of the thesis. This study is qualitative where the data has been collected through interviews. Four fam-ily workers, working in a municipality in Southern Finland, were interviewed. The theo-retical framework focuses on the different dimensions of participation as well as em-powerment. Empowerment is based on the idea of the process of people gaining control of their lives. Regarding the different aspects of participation, both internal and external factors are important in order to be fully participating. To analyze the gathered material, content analysis was used. Regarding the parent’s engagement, the result showed a mul-tidimensional span. Things like personal qualities, one’s ability to motivate clients, and the relationship to the family were important. Children’s participation was also a main question in this study. Earlier research, as well as the theoretical framework, suggests that the level of participation and knowledge of the family workers involvement should be decided according to the child’s level of maturity. The informants of this study shared this opinion. Also different methods were used to encourage the children to tell their sto-ry. The fundamental opinions of the informants were that the children’s and adults’ views are equally important in order to gain understanding of the full context. The final research question concerns how empowerment is notable in the work. The result showed that empowerment can be seen throughout most aspects of the family work. For exam-ple, the informants stressed the importance of the family’s ability to find their inner strength and start to believe that a change is possible, but also necessary. The family workers need to work with the family in a way that enables and supports this process.
