This degree thesis is a case study, the purpose of which is to give a thorough understanding of the basic principles of room acoustics. The space analyzed in this thesis is a band rehearsal space located in the youth centre of Drumsö. The rehearsal space is built into a bomb shelter, which means there is a fairly restrictive legal framework which restricts what can be done in terms of modifications. The room is rather small and its proportions are not ideal. The lower frequency range is especially affected, as it sounds murky and unclear. The research method used in this work has mostly been literary studies. Calculations have been made both by hand and by using various computer programmes. No acoustical measurements have been made. Questions related to soundproofing have not been taken into consideration. The objective of this work is to come up with propositions for improving the acoustics of the rehearsal space. The fact that the room is used for playing music is an important vector of analysis. An important part of this thesis is the study of the acoustic properties of commonly used construction materials. The main objective of this thesis is to understand the acoustic properties of the rehearsal space, to study which acoustic improvements have already been made and finally to come up with proposals for further improvement. The next step will be to make acoustic measurements using the theoretical concepts and calculations discussed in this thesis.
