This thesis examines dark tourism in the experience industry. It is commissioned by Museibyrån Kastelholm and researches the experience the visitor has on a guided tour through Kastelholm Castle on Aland Islands. The aim with this thesis is to investigate whether the castle could benefit from investing more on the dark tourism aspect, as well as to analyse how the visitors experience the guided tour. The introductory chapter defines the concept of dark tourism and the thesis then presents different theories on experience by the researchers Tarssanen and Kylänen as well as Pine II and Gilmore. Storytelling and the guide’s impact on the experience are also touched upon in the theory chapter. The research consists of five semistructured interviews with guides as well as an introductory observation of a guided tour. In the analysis of the thesis the different theories are compared to the findings in the research, and according to the theories the experience of Kastelholm’s Castle meet all the requirements. The research does not present any surprising finds, and the main findings are analysed to be that the guides all agree the ghost aspect could be developed at the castle, as well as developing their clothing. Gloating in horrible stories divide the guides’ opinions and could be a base for further research at the castle. The marketing of dark tourism could also be researched in the future, as well as the experience of the castle as a whole.
