The aim of this thesis work was to study the feasibility of a new Alternative Evacuation System (AES) for cruise ships. What kind of benefits the new system would bring and are there any disadvantages? AES is hybrid of a life raft and a lifeboat, embarkation to rafts is similar as with marine evacuation systems, and the rafts are self-propelled such as lifeboats.
Study was conducted by making two different example cases and comparing them to traditional arrangement to find out would there be a business case for a shipping company to include this pricey system to ship building agreement instead of traditional lifeboats.
So far there are two competing systems in the market from leading brands of industry. Though there are rumors of first applications, yet real deals are so far remaining undisclosed.
It was found out that the system might and would find its clients in the near future. There really is a possibility to increase cruise turnover and reduce operational costs by choosing alternative evacuation system.
