Reflective practice has been widely used by practitioners from various nursing backgrounds. Many studies on reflective practice have showed positive results. Nursing students who are new to the profession are often encounter with many ethical, emotional, psychologically and social challenges.
This study aims to explore the advantages of reflective practice to nursing students and present the challenges of such practice. The research questions were (1) What are the benefits of reflective practice to undergraduate nursing students and (2) What are the challenges that students may encounter in reflective practice?
A literature review was used to gain more information to answer the research questions. Kolb’s Model of Experiential Learning was introduced as the theoretical background. It is a model that represents the different ways of learning among nursing students. Johns Model of Structured Reflective was also introduced to the readers as a guide for reflective practice. An inductive content analysis was used to analyse all chosen articles resulted in five categories.
The study has found that reflective practice is useful to nursing students. The practice empowers students in their profession, closing the gap of theory and practice, contribute and increase self-awareness among students as well as some other challenges that are worth paying attention to.
