In my thesis, I have enquired into how parents of children with special needs experience the support of society. To start with I will give some background information about my choice of subject. Also I will inform about the pedagogical and social service that urban districts offer families with one or several children in need of special service. I will refer to former research in this field and explain my aim with this paper.
I draw my theoretical frame from social pedagogy which I see as the most suitable for my work.
I also describe the method I have chosen to use for this examination paper. I have made a qualitative study of enquiring parents of children with special needs. The interviews are thematic and all of them were made in the beginning of 2015.
The result of my study is that more improvement has to be made in the Finnish welfare system in order to give the families with children in need of special service the best kind of support. Authorities in the field of social service must improve their information about all the different forms of support that a family can get. Also the families’ stress, and the importance of how the knowledge of the first diagnosis of the child is brought to the fam-ily, is really important. Most parents wished for a more professional and emphatic ap-proach towards them. This appears well both in my study and in the articles I base my study on. Improvement could also be made between different institutions through coop-eration and “a leading professional” who would be responsible for the concerns of the child. Parents who already have a heavy everyday task are compelled to act coordinators for everything concerning the child. Most parents agreed that support is given, one must only know where and how to apply for it and to be prepared to do it all yourself.
All parents agreed that the continued support after the child was born was of utmost im-portance. All parents wished for professionals, people who know their field of occupation and who are not hesitant to act when needed.
