Abstract:
This is a study of the experiences of the familymembers to a person suffering from dementia regarding short-term care at a nursing home. The study was ordered by a nursing home in the Helsinki region. Earlier research show that life as a familymember to a person suffering from dementia can be challenging, but also that it is not easy to decide on care in a nursing home for the relative. As the theoretic perspeciv Aaron Antonovskys theory on salutogenesis och sense of coherence, which concludes of three components: comprehensibility, manageabilty and meaningfulness, was chosen. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the familymembers experienced the short-term care and to get a picture of their everyday life as a familymember to a person suffering from dementia. Content analysis was chosen as the method and questionnaires were used to gather data. The results show that the familymembers appreciate the short-term care a lot and that they felt well treated by the personnel at the ward. Everyday life was going according to the terms of the relative and the familymembers felt bound to the home, as they felt that they couldn ́t leave the relative home alone. The short-term care gave the familymembers an oppurtuinty to breath and gave time for freetime activities and for spending time with friends and family. The familymembers could relax when they knew that their relative was in good hands. All of the familymembers wished to use this type of service again.
