The purpose of this thesis is was to provide added value for the company under research and its personnel. The work describes the separate and combined effects of leadership and Lean philosophy on the company's operations as well as their combined effects on the supply chain of the organization. Furthermore, it aims to identify the needs for development and gives suggestions for procedures to improve the delivery reliability and to develop the management and personnel in the organization. The thesis focuses on improvement of the supply chain of the spare parts provided by the workshop and on the areas of development that are looked for together with the personnel. The research problem was to indicate the factors that affect the delays of the supply chain related to the order lead time. The research material is based on the information provided by a survey questionnaire and the ERP system of the company. The theoretical background of the study relies on the Lean philosophy and the different forms of leadership. In addition, the thesis discusses the theoretical aspects of purchasing and production management related to production activities. By conducting quantitative and developmental research based on the theory, the objective was to generate results without creating significant costs to the company. Based on the research results, the problems related to the operation of the organization are described. These include too low delivery reliability, challenges in the management and intentions to meet the objective of 100 % quality in hasty time schedules. This thesis project was commissioned by Marski Data Oy. The goal of the project was to recognize the core skills of the company’s IT department and to identify the gap between current and desired skills. In the study, the current skills of the IT department were mapped, skills maps were drawn up and a customer satisfaction survey was conducted. Additionally, a continuous skills management process was put into specific terms. The theoretical framework used includes mapping of core skills, skills mapping and skills management. The Marski Data management team, IT staff and some of the client’s personnel took part in the project. The approach used was action research focused on finding new ways of working and new perspectives on skills management. Data was gathered with customer satisfaction surveys and staff surveys as well as observations of the current practices. The work also attempted to take into account and identify the future skills needs of Marski Data. Skills shortages were detected in all the identified core areas and also in a few soft competencies. The bright core competencies, systematic follow-up skills and personal development plans are in key position in knowledge management. With regard to possible training needs of each individual, the most suitable way of developing one's pro-fessional skills and sharing one's knowledge should be taken into account. The skills maps and development plans created in the project allow Marski Data to manage the core skills of its IT staff as a continuous process. This gives managers the possibility to forecast future skills need, and an individual employee tools to develop oneself and thereby experience one’s jobs as more meaningful....

This thesis concentrates on developing the operational culture of the personnel and improving the business image of a medical device subcontracting company. The company is compliant and certified for international business operations. The aim of the research was to observe views related to the personnel’s work commitment and its influence on good product quality. Furthermore, observations reflecting the company’s business image were made. This study was a continuation to a previous internal study made in the company. The experimental part of the study was an interview to 13 members of the personnel from different work operations. Organised semi-structured interview gave a sufficient overview of the present situation. Psychological capital and self-determination theories were used as the theoretical background for this study. The scopes of psychological capital and the basic needs of psychological agreement constitute the theme groups for the analysis of the research results. The analysis of the research results generated a list of action points for further development operations. Key observations were business image clarification, development of management, leadership culture and communication, improvement of work introduction process, enhancement of activities to improve work motivation and support attitudes towards change readiness....

The aim of this thesis is to study if the Lean method and its tools can be utilized also in the organi-zation of basic vocational education. The goal is to find policies for vocational education to create an educational system in which students have more opportunities for independent study paths. Independent study paths give students the opportunity to customize both teaching and their study time to correspond with their own abilities. The basis of the thesis is value stream mapping (VSM) composed from students' and teachers' perspectives as well as queries for the students. This thesis was commissioned by Joensuun CNC-Machining Oy Ltd and the aim was to create a strategy-based management system to support the company’s management by using constructive research method. Practical management and decision making will become more efficient because of the new management system. This system also helps the company to update its strategy and implement it to every level of the organization. There are two sections in this thesis: theory and practical sections. The theory section introduces the basics of a strategic management and operation models of measuring. In the section of practical development work, the company is made more strategy-driven with the help of the management system. Continuous improvement philosophy is present in the measurement system and the information given by it is used in everyday management. The theoretical framework of the study was made with the Balanced Scorecard, developed by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton. The implementation model of the new management system was developed by Jouko Toivanen and it was customized to work with this project. The objectives of the thesis were achieved and the implementation of a new electronic management system succeeded. This system has proved to be excellent tool for strategic management and it helps to bring strategic knowledge all across the company. With some changes, this thesis can help other companies in the industry....

The aim of this study was to find out what kind tools are available for measuring service production and quality management. The report was drawn up on the basis of ESH-Mediatri service description, ESH-Mediatri service recommendation, as well as ESH-Mediatri quality indicators. Once submitted, the descriptions can be applied to other uses of the data centre service production. In addition, the thesis aims to provide development proposals on the quality and efficiency of service production. The theoretical part focuses on quality concepts, service production, measurement of productivity, service metrics, measurement concepts, as well as service level agree-ments. The theory part also introduces the benefits of experienced practices of the JHS-recommendations and presents the service management framework. The methods of functional and constructive research were used in this thesis. Action research aims to clarify issues related to the measurement and development of service quality, and to bring about change. At the same time, the aim was to create new knowledge in matters related to quality. Constructive research was used in creating new designs for ESH-Mediatri measurement of service and creating quality indicators. ISO 9001 -standard, which deals with the requirements of quality management systems has been updated in 2015. The purpose of this study was to renew the client company´s existing quality management system in accordance with this standard. In addition, the aim of the study was to create proposals to reform the practices and to find and maintain the good practices of the company´s operations. This thesis describes the main changes in the revised standard and the company´s steps towards to the new quality management system. This study’s primary approach was action research but there were also some features of case study. Internal audit, brainstorming, inquiry, interviews and participant observation were used for information acquisition. The outcome of the project was the renewed quality manual and a part of the company´s documented procedures. With the data acquisition methods, it was investigated what kind of actions the company should take in order to make the quality management system correspond with the new standard. The project resulted also in proposals to improve practices. The proposals were found e.g. in the development of the operation environment and the working methods as well as internal communication and collaboration....

The aim of this thesis is to study the changes in the reform of vocational education and training, towards the structures of education. The reform is combining the youth and adult vocational education and training. The background of the change is society's economic education, training and labour market policy reforms, as well as renewing work. The change must be prepared by reforming education. This study was conducted as action research development work. Development challenges were approached initially by operational research, which examined the current situation, based on the challenges of working life and the education system. The methods of vocational education renewal in the study was a quantitative survey and qualitative methods of observation of the Board of Education open discussion with the operators in the education, which is applied for the results of guidelines for reform. Vocational training has been redeveloped towards individualized work and student-direction. The reform aims at better jobs, and increases the effectiveness of vocational education and training. The training of the work perspective encourages students to become active by means of internal motivation. Studying is always a personal process in which students learn to learn, manage themselves, interact and collaborate in society. The thesis sought solutions to the learner's personal work-oriented study paths of young people and adult education, which is an equal starting point for training. The result was achieved competence-based and work life related study paths and an implementation plan for the implementation of a construction degree. Working life-based education is hoped to increase the permeability of education degrees....

In this thesis it was studied how the employees in a school experience the redundancies due to productional and economical reasons. Co-operation process with undertakings is fa-miliar in the industrial world, but within the school system it is quite a new phenomenon. The idea was to clarify how the organization and the shop steward can support the employee in the change. At the same time, it was clarified what kind of knowledge and support was needed during the process and what kind of feelings people have during the process. For this study, earlier studies and literature were familiarized with. A questionnaire was made about the process for the whole organization. The questionnaire was carried out by Webropol. In this questionnaire people answered on multiple choice questions and it was also possible to write free comments. Furthermore, some workers were interviewed and comments heard in meetings were written down. The results of the questionnaire and inter-views were analyzed and compared to sources. Finally, conclusions and proposals for im-provement were made for the same kind of situations. The results can be useful in other similar organizations....
