This thesis is made in co-operation with the North Karelia Vocational College’s Technology and Culture training programs. The aim of this study was to examine the staff's view on the entire knowledge-mapping process: How do employees feel that they learn something new, with what measures learning is considered most successful and how the effectiveness of learning shows in their own work. The study was conducted by a qualitative research approach, in which the quantitative questionnaire survey method was used to study the whole staff’s opinions on survey themes. Theme interviews clarified the matter and were used to find the answers for the research questions. As a result can be stated that knowledge surveys have been carried out, but the infor-mation is left unexploited. Their completion, however, was felt to be important. In professional expertise development external trainings were considered the most important because of their targeting. One must be able to use new information in work in order to be able to really internalize the information. Based on research data, adaptation of a wider knowledge mapping system is recom-mended so that the existing know-how can be better utilized and used as a support in the recruiting process. Teams must improve their internal processes to enable a wider range of learning as the education and work-week jobs are selected in accordance to the team's needs. By using more efficient discussion within a team they could develop into self-guided working units....

This thesis deals with the development of strategic management in a micro-enterprise, why the development of strategic management is needed and what methods are suita-ble for the development of strategic management. In the municipal sector there has been a shift towards the realization alternatives of market economy for some time now. In the past years, competitive bidding and outsourcing have been adopted in the municipal sector to improve the production of services. The outsourcing of the public utility services in the city of Varkaus has been the most significant realized outsourcing project in the field of municipal engineering in Finland. The aim of this thesis was to find out the reasons why the outsourcing of the public utility services was so successful in the city of Varkaus and also to discover the main areas of improvement. The research method of this case study was electronic questionnaire that was sent to the clients of the public utility services in the city of Varkaus. A journalistic interview was also conducted for some additional research material. The research results of the thesis explain the reasons why the outsourcing was successful and the areas of improvement in the production service management. Based on the results, improvement suggestions were presented for issues to be taken into account in the operating model. The key elements for further development were flexibility, trust between the actors and interactive cooperation. In further studies, it would be interesting to examine the possibilities of improving the flow of information over organizational boundaries and to examine the usage of interactive electronic medium in the management of production services....

The aim of this thesis was quality assurance of sourcing and development of operation management. In this thesis the quality development of subcontracting purchase in particular has been explored. The purpose of this study was to create tools for the continuous quality improvement of purchase. An additional objective was to study the theory of measuring procurement. As the research method has been used practical information on the purchase areas, literature and discussions with the company personnel, and other sources. Based on this information, new models and guidelines for the development of the purchasing activity were created, and will be possible to create later. As the context and theoretical framework for the thesis have been lean-methodology, the Balanced Scorecard concept, SCOR-model and the development of the acquisition of reactive method towards the acquisition of a proactive method. In the result section, the supplier’s scorecard model is introduced. The conclusion section states that performance measurement in companies is very important. Systematic measurement with well-made indicators enables the operational improvements. As one of the most important development ideas is the suggestion for the introduction of Balanced Scorecard model with the chosen suppliers....

The field of water maintenance is in constant change. Different changes are encountered for example in merging of water supply plants, in joint municipalities and changes in organization and in reorganizing work. The complex and constantly evolving business environment in the field causes pressure for change in the water maintenance organizations. In this thesis it was studied with the help of literature, regulations, surveys and interviews, which factors of change are coming to the field of water supply within these frameworks. The information within these frameworks was analyzed by using the Burke and Litwin model, which gives an overall picture of the elements that affect the organization and the human activities. The model can be used to analyze the development needs in a company's human resource management. The aim of this thesis was to find clear recommendations for management in change in status. As a result, Kuopio Water can prepare for future changes by improving the organization's readiness for change. The management team should consider the impact of external factors, the weak signals should be listened to and good management practices should be emphasized....

The concept of intellectual capital management is a relatively new field of work, even if the organizations have taken care of the issues related to it more or less systematically for decades. On the other hand, individual development discussions have been quite common in most Finnish organizations for several years. In the present day leadership doctrines and in the prevailing public opinion development discussions are appreciated. Despite the perceived need development pressures are accumulating on the development discussions. In this thesis Kidex Ltd´s employees’ feelings about development discussions were studied by qualitative case methods. The results were compared with other studies as well as with my own experiences and views. Intellectual capital management was raised at the center of the theme so that development discussions would not be only a separate part of it. The results show that the attitudes of managers and staff in development discussions are mainly positive. Positive experiences of development discussions are related to opportunities to influence one’s own work and getting feedback. Negative experiences are related to the fact that agreed things are not going forward. If the concrete benefits have not been reached, development discussion is not seen as an intentional or meaningful thing. This research and my own reflection show that Kidex Ltd's intellectual capital management can be improved. The rescue department of North Savo produces emergency medical services in three levels. Every fire station has a first respond unit. Ambulance services are located in the cities of Kuopio, Varkaus and Suonenjoki. There are seven basic level ambulances and four paramedic units altogether. Emergency medical services are under a big change at the moment. Hall hospital district will take the responsibility of arrangements in Finland. The aim of this diploma was to develop the leadership and strategy management for the emergency medical services of the rescue departments in North Savo. The diploma includes also the Good action quality manual of the city of Kuopio. Leadership, strategic management and quality work will be the main processes in the development of the emergency medical services. This diploma has agreed to be a part of the whole development process of emergency medical services. New laws of emergency response centre and health care have been enacted this year. Also a new law of rescue services will be enacted later which means that many things in emergency actions will chance. The rescue depart ment of North Savo wants to have a pioneer role in the development of emergency medical services in cooperation with the others authorities....
