This thesis deals with the work of safety coordinator in road maintenance in areal contracts. Safety coordinator is the developer's representative in areal contracts. The purpose of this thesis was to clarify the developing needs of the tasks of the safety coordinator. The goal was to present propositions for tools in the job of a safety coordinator. Supervision conventions and development needs were clarified by interviewing the supervisors of areal contracts and specialist of Finnish Transport Agency. The interviews were theme interviews. It came up in the interviews how the controlling could be developed by processing safety matters in the beginning of the contract and processing safety matters regularly during the contract. Effective informing about new safety directives was considered important. Monitoring the safety of maintenance in areal contracts can be developed by taking into use areal contract safety kick-off meetings and safety meetings and self-monitoring during the contract. This improves the co-operation between the contractor and the developer and also the communication about safety matters in areal contracts. The purpose of this thesis was to conceptualise the next generation of ABLOY-fire door closing systems. On the other hand, the goal was to find cost saving improvements in the short term but also tried to find the targets of development in the long term view of the entirely new generation fire door closing system. The approaching method was to find the development targets especially in the view of product develop-ment. The theory part demonstrates first how the enterprises usually develop new products and concepts. The objects of study were especially customer oriented product development and how to make cost savings with product development. These issues are related to listening to voice of the customer and improving productivity. The used research methods were customer survey, environment mapping, brainstorming and interviews. The end results of this thesis contain the draft measure for the cost savings in the current fire door closing systems. In addition, there are suggestions what should be taken into account in the product development project of the possible new generation fire door closing systems. The aim of this study was to examine the future of municipal water supply in the city of Joensuu and the surrounding municipalities, in this case Kontiolahti, Liperi and Polvijärvi, from a business perspective. Water supply functions were examined from a financial point of view on the basis of unbundled financial statements. At the same time, the preparation of the Joensuu region water supply development plan for 2016–2030 focused broadly on issues of water supply development and the aim of this study was to immerse in considering the prerequisites for deepening the administrative cooperation of organizations. Economic observations were made from regional and national perspectives. From the perspective of water supply activities, it seems clear that the water supply facilities of the region should be combined into larger ones. From customers’ point of view, the regional water works would have better conditions to secure high-quality and affordable water supply services in the Joensuu region in the future. Through examination of operational efficiency, it is observed that in the Joensuu region larger units could possibly offer clear benefits. From an economic point of view, at this time all of the water works of the area do not work in a healthy economic basis but, instead, are supported by tax revenues. A negative change visible to customers of a larger regional organization could be a possible reduction in individual service. The willingness of water supply plants’ owners to unite could be affected by the fear of reduction in revenue recognition....

This thesis was carried out as a developmental research work. The purpose of this the-sis was to find out the development areas of Metedo Oy’s existing business model and build a development plan for the future activities. The research work was divided in four sections: study of the state of the existing busi-ness, personnel competence survey, business model improvement and building future scenarios to support the strategic decisions. In the beginning, the research was done as an action research by using quantitative personnel survey and several qualitative methods like observation, inquiry, document analysis and SWOT-analysis. In the middle of the research, the Business Model Canvas was used to improve and develop the existing business. The last phase of the research was performed thrusting futurology by using scenario working method. The research work in all phases involved and activated the company’s personnel target-ing to achieve more profound understanding and commitment. The theoretical basis for this study was established by studying the domestic and foreign source theories of each topic. The outcome was the Business Development Plan, introducing the most important development areas which came out during the research and development process. The objectives of the thesis were achieved successfully. The aim of this thesis was to find out the needs of development of knowledge of accident prevention education and the accident prevention team at the Emergency Services College (ESC). The aim was also to obtain comprehensive information about the needs of development in order to be able to respond with education to future needs of knowledge required for working in the rescue services with accident prevention. The project was carried out by applying the Delphi research method and participatory action methods. First, a survey was made to find out the development needs. Then, the results of the survey were handled in group discussions with representatives of rescue departments. Finally, the representatives of rescue departments and other partners commented on the information gathered. To process the results a literature study was made, open interviews with experts were conducted, and the information was discussed with the whole accident prevention team at the ESC.including the development needs of vocational training and The project produced an extensive study of the needs for the development of education of accident prevention skills continuing education at the ESC. During the project a competency development strategy for the accident prevention team as well as the model of the pedagogical discussions in the team were also created. The target of this thesis was to clarify the role of rescue authority in steering of construction. The procedures of steering vary among rescue departments. The varying procedures confuse the actors in construction. The thesis studied the rescue authorities' participation in the steering of construction and the liaison with the building control authorities related to it. The research methods were surveys for both authorities, expert interviews and the hearing of steering group formed for this thesis. As a result it was found out that both authorities see the importance of rescue authority's participation in steering of construction. Many methods of steering used by the rescue authority, which have an effective influence on safety, were recognized. Many things that cause problems in the liaison arose and the ideas how to improve things were found out. Many obscurities in the rescue authority's role within steering of construction were noticed to be a result of non-aligned principals in liaison policy between The Ministry of Environment and The Ministry of the Interior. The alignment of rescue authority's role within steering of construction is needed. In the worst case the ongoing reform of county government can ruin the much needed liaison which has been built without the obligation of the statute. To ensure the liaison, the statutory change is needed. This thesis was carried out as a quality development work. In the development, the focus was on improving quality by introducing and trying out several mainly Lean-based tools for collaborative leadership. The primary goal in this development work, was to make a collaboration-based quality improvement tool. The development study proceeded according to the approach of action research, therefore, quanti-tative data collection methods were used. Mainly Lean-based collaborating- and leading tools were used in the development work. The work was done using tools in one pilot workplace of organization. The study about the effects of collaborative leadership in improving quality was done by using variable quality measurement tools and also a survey for staff was made to measure how did they felt about collaborative leadership.
