The purpose of this thesis was to improve the profitability of the case company X’s factory in Finland. The framework of the improvement was limited to decreasing the total of the balance sheet. The production operations of the case company X in Finland had decreased significantly compared to previous years and many of the factories had been shut down during this period. Due to this, and the fact that the company still possessed large stocks and number of properties with no production activity, the balance sheet of the company was too massive in comparison to the level of the company’s turnover. The study was conducted by case study methods. In the reduction of the total of the balance sheet, the focus was on the current and long-term assets. Group interview and observation were used as the data acquisition method. Financial statements from several years with attachments were also utilised. Buildings, structures, machines and equipment that was defined to be sold were specified in this thesis, and the stocks to be sold or eliminated were specified based on inventory analysis. After defining these specifications, the analysis of the financial statement was conducted, and the forecast of the financial statement was projected for the years 2015-2016. The improvement of the profitability was evaluated by selected key figures. As the result of this thesis, according to the projections, the total of the balance sheet will decrease significantly. Because of this, based on the key indicators, the profitability of the company will also be significantly improved....

The purpose of this thesis was to create situation awareness regarding the status of improvement possibilities in travel invoice process in the Finnish Defence Forces’ Service Centre and to give suggestions for which improvement proposals should be first invested in and which should be further investigated. The intention was to use Lean principles to create situation awareness and improvement possibilities. The subject was approached by exploring the invoice travel process and Lean principles. Situation awareness was composed from the elements of traveller questionnaire, interviews and SAP data. Furthermore, the intention was to get answers from Certia to the research questions of this thesis for benchmarking purposes. Based on the situation awareness, the primary improvement targets were deficiencies in the process owner’s targets and roadmap for the process, SAP Travel user interface and instructions from travellers’ perspective. In addition to these, user rights should be added so that the receipt inspector could do slight corrections to the invoice. Further investigation should be made for example to productivity because there is a lot of variation when viewed at monthly level. In addition, the roles of the invoice handlers and the possibility to use these roles in conjunction should be further investigated. Answers to the thesis questions were received from Certia, but the answers were not comparable to the corresponding figures of the Finnish Defence Forces’ Service Centre....

The purpose of this study was to develop processes for professional services at precision engineering laboratory. Challenges of the daily work at the laboratory are the various requirements of different customer segments. Laboratory assignments come from clients in manufacturing industry, educational or public research. The focus in this study was on services for the manufacturing industry. It was chosen because it adds value also for the other sectors. Action research was adapted by using service design tools. At the beginning of the study, observation was the main method to find out about the current status and the problems in daily operations. The big picture of a service process and ideal working practice was created by using service blueprinting. The objective of this thesis was to compile a development plan of competence in information and communication technology for Savonlinna University Practice School. The development plan aims to develop teachers’ competence to meet the requirements of the new comprehensive school curriculum and the strategy of the information and communication technology of Savonlinna University Practice School. The digitalization progress of our society challenges the entire education system in both global and domestic scale. The secondary objective of this study was to explore this challenge from the standpoint of an individual school. This thesis was carried out as an action research. The thesis consists of a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part focused on competence development and management. For the practical part a development plan for Savonlinna University Practical School was constructed. The research methods included an application of surveys, participating observation and content analysis of written material. As a result of this study the strategy of the information and communication technology of Savonlinna University Practice School was refined. Furthermore, the core competence and objectives were specified. The current state of competence was analyzed and the development plan was compiled on the findings. The development plan serves as a guidance to align the faculty’s competence in information and communication technology according to the curriculum and strategy. While all the objectives of this thesis were achieved, the impact of the development plan must be evaluated in the long run. Further actions of the study will be compiling development plans in individual level and finding a solution to the lack of time of the faculty staff....

This thesis was commissioned by a large Finnish corporation. At target corporation’s consumer organization there was a real need to study and develop a standard delivery process amongst employees and people who work daily within or as a part of the process. In this thesis the business processes are examined first on the theory level. From theory the source information is reflected critically towards real-life work inside the organization at hand. The purpose was to create a sufficient theory base of how business processes are born and how the development of these processes should be managed. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in this thesis. The primary purpose of quantitative method was gathering information about the current state of the process. With the help of qualitative method, interview, it was easier to build a survey to cover a larger focus group because it allowed a deeper understanding of the processes’ current state and it helped to ask the right kind of questions in the survey. As a result of the survey it was clear that different people working in different stages or parts of the process had sometimes very dissenting opinions about the standard delivery process. Therefore it called for a development that could bring people working in the process to come closer together in order to achieve the common goal. The project was to create a web based learning environment that would serve all employees in the process of standard delivery....

Today’s competition on the market situation forces companies to develop effectiveness of their business processes. However, the increased effectiveness should not be a decreasing factor in customer satisfaction. Empower Ltd. was interested in the level of effectiveness and what it looks like from the customer’s point of view. The interesting issue led to the commissioning of the thesis. The goals were set by Empower Ltd. The first goal was to study the theory of Lean methods and secondly, apply the theory for production by developing a tool to investigate effectiveness of processes and develop a model for continuous improvement. The third goal was to make guideline to help the supervisors. The purpose of this thesis was to study the applicability of Lean methods for maintenance service business. The main point was to gain information about the meaning of effectiveness according to Lean philosophy. In this thesis the goal was to define effectiveness and how it is connected to business and how it affects to customer satisfaction. The results of the thesis are the effectiveness analysis tool and the process of continuous improvement with the helping manual. Craftsmanship of an expert is formed through the combination of training and experience. In companies the development of craftsmanship to meet a company’s goals is directed through a learning strategy. Especially in information intensive professions strategic development of know-how is vital for a company’s competitive ability. In this thesis an IT-services company was studied and a group of supervisors at two levels were interviewed for their experiences about learning strategy in the company – its creation, implementation and deployment, as well as their expectations about the company’s new strategy. Research data was gathered through themed interviews from six supervisors. The data was used to determine the company’s current learning strategy and to devise development suggestions for the future. It was found that although the company had effective processes to maintain competitive ability, none of the supervisors interviewed were able to describe the company’s learning strategy or strategy in general. The research data suggests that the company is operating in a market environment where there is little possibilities for competitive advantage. To survive, the company has evolved to follow the Imitator basic strategy as described by Leenamaija Otala. It is difficult to create competitive advantages when using that strategy. Development suggestions consist of ways the company can change its operation to be more strategic and future-oriented....
