Treatment in a rehabilitation clinic This study was conducted in co-operation with the staff members of a rehabilitation clinic. The study was functional. The aim was to develop the treatment process of the rehabilitation clinic so that the treatment would be structured and consistent. This was done by creating material for the conversational treatment and by formulating criteria for counseling in a rehabilitation institute. The method used in the study was instillation. In this study the silent knowledge was gained by charting the current situation through interviews. The methods used in the data collection were semi-structured interviews and content analysis. The new course of action is described in two flow charts. They were created based on the new targets of development that were suggested in the interviews. The flow charts help to illustrate the results of the study and will be further used by the rehabilitation clinic in their work. The lack of targets of development was seen as a challenge as the study was executed. The staff members found the current operations model sufficient when it comes to the criteria of rehabilitative institutional care. Thus, the aim of the study, which was to develop the treatment process of the rehabilitation clinic, could not be fulfilled entirely. Various questionnaires that measure psychiatric symptoms and the extent of the drug abuse were collected as a tool for the conversational treatment. The questionnaires standardize the treatment, bring a structure to the conversations and facilitate the monitoring of the progress of the treatment. The questionnaires also help the employee to estimate the client’s need for institutional care. Criteria for rehabilitative institutional care could not be formulated in this study as the rehabilitation clinic staff found the current operations model satisfactory. Upon request of the staff members material on the treatment process was created for the orientation of new employees and as a guideline to standardize the treatment. The treatment process as a whole was found to be too wide a topic for one thesis, and thus covering of specific stages of the treatment process will be left for future studies. Key words: drug rehabilitation, conversational treatment, rehabilitative institutional care, treatment of outpatients, intoxicants....

Inclusive support at the beginning of the studies - student’s perspective The purpose of this study was to find out the studying motivation and learning experiences among the students of Hyria Hyvinkää Vocational Institute. The students in vocational upper secondary education interrupt their studies more often than students on other education degrees. Interruption of studies is also one major risk of social exclusion, as the young are left without education and degree and thus the employment becomes more difficult. Several studies have shown that the more educated people are more aware of the importance of health promotion and are also more interested in their own health. For this reason, vocational upper secondary education institutes should also emphasize students' own role in their health promotion. In this study, first academic year students of the Hyria Hyvinkää Vocational Institute were interviewed. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors that support students to continue their studies, which factors may affect the interrupting of studies, as well as what type of support students wish to obtain in order to continue their studies. This study is a part of the Inclusive support at the beginning of the studies (OAOT - 2013-2014) –project. In this study a qualitative approach was used. The interviews were carried out as theme interviews. Engeström’s (1995) model for developmental work research was used as a theoretical background. The interviews were carried out as group interviews and the interviews were recorded for the transcription. The target groups of the interviews were the first year students of Vocational Qualification in Business Information Technology, the first year students of Vocational Qualification in Social and Health Care (Practical Nurse) and the members of the student union. There were altogether 35 interviewees (n=35) of which 20 were boys and 15 were girls. The research results were analyzed using content analysis. The study showed that factors supporting the continuation of studies included social relationships, future plans, the student's own mental welfare as well as the education system. Students thought that the possible causes of the interruption were the student's personal factors, the missing support of the school staff and the different effects of society. Furthermore, the students hoped to receive positive feedback, economic support and to be heard in order to finish their studies. In future, vocational schools should pay more attention to the meaningfulness of the studies, students’ support and encouragement. The majority of the drop-outs will interrupt their studies already during the first semester. More current information about the possible study alternatives should be provided in the 7 to 9 degrees of comprehensive school....

Commitment to fatherhood in the context of relationship This thesis looks at commitment to fatherhood in the context of relationship. The purpose was to understand, interpret and depict the experiences reported by fathers with regards to their commitment to the relationship, and the significance of this commitment to themselves and to their sense of fatherhood, and which kinds of committed father actors’ result based on the stories. The objectives were to increase the author's professional expertise, and to provide "food for thought" for children's clinic’s staff when discussing relationship matters with clients, and to examine the stories by fathers committed to fatherhood, and the significances and action taking. Things which need clarification resulted in the following research problems: What kinds of stories/narratives did the interviewed fathers produce regarding their relationships from the viewpoint of fatherhood? What fatherhood significances for the man himself can be identified in the stories/narratives contributed by the interviewed fathers? What kinds of committed father actors were formed from these stories/narratives contributed by the interviewed fathers? The study material is composed of the stories contributed by six fathers, and these stories were collected by means of episodic interviews. The subjects interviewed were fathers, who were willing to talk about their fatherhood and relationship voluntarily and based on their personal experiences. The research approach was qualitative research. The principal method employed was narrative analysis, and therein the content and format analysis i.e. the construction of the plot, as well as categorical approach. Ancillary tools were waiting analysis, and the theory of the core episode. Three model stories constituted the research results: Normative Stories versus Non-Normative Stories (2), Desire-Intent Stories (2), and Adventure Stories (2). In the Normative Stories versus Non-Normative Stories the issue at stake was marriage, following falling in love at a young age, and the couple mutually deciding to have children. The events in these stories proceeded in a relatively stable manner without any major dips. In the Desire-Intent Stories, desire and intent functioned as tools towards achieving that which was possible. The events in these stories proceeded progressively. The Adventure Stories were formed according to the way the men entered a relationship, became fathers, and how they reacted to their children. These stories proceeded progressively, partly regressively, and there were also some stable stages. The significance of fatherhood revealed itself as an important and natural phenomenon to the men, and as responsible proudness, as a licence to care, to love, and to support the child, as the father’s love for their child, as powerful emotional experience, and as an experience that strengthens family ties, as well as the male self-esteem elevation. The fathers’ own childhood experiences of their fathers strongly influenced their orientation implementation of paternity, both positive and negative experiences. The material included actively and strongly committed father actors (1), active and committed father actors (3), passive and committed father actors (2), and passive and weakly committed father actors (1). One father was in two groups of actors, that is why there are seven fathers (7)....

Adolescents and compulsive digital gaming - a systematic literature review Digital gaming among adolescents has increased steadily and a majority of children play digital games. Excessive digital gaming can turn into compulsive digital gaming and it can be severely harmful for young people. Compulsive digital gaming often affects the wellbeing of an adolescent holistically. The effects can be physical, psychological and/or social and gaming, particularly compulsive digital gaming, affects the different areas of an adolescent`s life, for e.g. how well they manage at school and how they sleep. Playing digital games can be very engaging and time consuming and many children would like to spend hours every day playing digital games. Therefore, parents have a major role in preventing children from playing too much. People, e.g parents, researchers etc. should pay more attention to preventing compulsive digital -gaming. The purpose of our Bachelors’ thesis is to describe how compulsive digital gaming affects the wellbeing of adolescents and how to prevent the compulsive digital gaming of adolescents. The thesis was carried out in collaboration with Laurea Otaniemi and Kuitinmäki school. Our aim in this thesis is to provide valid information on compulsive digital gaming and how to prevent it. The information provided in this thesis can be useful for parents, school staff, health care professionals and people interested in this particular subject. Our study can help parents to recognize possible signs of compulsive digital gaming in their children. This thesis was conducted as a systematic literature review. The study questions were: how compulsive digital gaming affects the wellbeing of adolescents and how to prevent compulsive digital gaming. The study material was selected systematically from databases and by scanning manually. 26 research articles and dissertations were included to the study. We also chose a few reliable scientific article discussions to our review. The study materials were analyzed by using qualitative content analysis. According to the findings the different areas of an adolescent`s life affected by compulsive digital gaming are: sleeping and coping, physical activity and health, psychological wellbeing, eating habits, behavior, school, hobbies, friendship, family and spending money. Cornerstones in preventing compulsive digital gaming are: limiting digital gaming, the placement of the gaming device at home, involving parents in playing digital games, following the age limits, playing digital games together and playing digital games safely. Currently, children are born in the middle of media culture and a digital world of games. As the number of children playing digital games increases, it is necessary that in the future adults focus even more on preventing compulsive digital gaming in the future....

Factors Impacting Interaction between Non- Native Clients and Healthcare Professionals The purpose of this thesis was to find out the factors that contribute to the interaction between foreign clients and health care professionals and also to consider the ways in which the interaction can be improved. This thesis is part of a project called Communication in Social- and Healthcare. Literature reviews were used in this thesis and the material consisted of ten domestic studies. The literature review helps to study the issue diversely and it can be used to create new information about the cases that have already been studied. According to statistics, there are at least 183 133 (2011) foreign individuals living in Finland. In this thesis foreign is defined as a client whose native tongue is other than Finnish or Swedish. The results of this thesis suggest that interaction plays a significant role in non-native encounters. Several studies indicate that the encountering between the nurse and the client influence on how clients evaluate the treatment they have received. The encounter of a foreign client is challenging because of language barriers. However, studies show that the greatest obstacle to communication is feeling of injustice, lack of understanding and bias of healthcare professionals. Keywords: communication, interaction, foreign language...
