Did you know? – A guide to support the sexual health of an adolescent The thesis is practice-based and consists of two guides for Elimäki Upper Comprehensive School. These guides will be utilised by teachers in health education. The target group is 13–15-year-old adolescents. The guides focus mainly on sexual education and the mental and physical changes caused by puberty. The aim is to inspire pupils to respect their own and others’ bodies and simultaneously provide reliable information that is as recent as possible about sexual health and the changes caused by puberty. The guides also emphasize health care professionals’ obligation to maintain secrecy. They contain contact information for the Elimäki area where adolescents can receive help with their problems, if needed. One of the guides is for seventh graders and centres more on the mental and physical aspects of puberty as well as dating. Correspondingly, the guide for eighth and ninth graders is constructed to focus more on contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. The theoretical section was created while utilising the most recent information in the field from literature, online publications and research. The report is compiled from nine literary sources and fifty online sources. Twelve literary sources and thirteen online sources were used in the guides, of which the majority are different sources than those used in the report section. The guides also include images, colours and humour so that they would be more interesting to their target group and thus facilitate learning. The guides also utilise the colloquial language spoken by adolescents. In order to enable convenience and updatability, the guides will be added to the school’s electronic system. Adolescents can also use them at home where they can concentrate on becoming familiar with the issues that they are genuinely interested in. The guides were evaluated using an evaluation form designed by us. The guides were tested for one and a half months at Elimäki Upper Comprehensive School, after which they were evaluated by one 7th grade, one 8th grade and five health education teachers. The teachers gave us positive feedback on the guides as well as good suggestions for development and corrections. This feedback allowed us to make the guides even more specific and compatible with the school’s health education. The report section of the practice-based thesis is based on researched, up-to-date knowledge and additionally contains an evaluation of the functionality of the guides and their development process....

Kognitiivisten ja toiminnallisten menetelmien käyttö unettomuuden hoidossa
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2012)
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on tuottaa unikoulu työikäisille unihäiriöistä kärsiville aikuisille.
Unikoulumalli antaa hyvät perustiedot vastaavanlaisten ryhmien perustamiseen sairaanhoitajille.

Documentation ensuring successful follow-up treatment in a newborn intensive care unit This thesis has been realised in collaboration with Children’s Hospital in Helsinki and their newborn intensive care unit K7, as well as with Laurea University of Applied Sciences. Unit K7 treats newborns who need intensive care. The most common reasons leading to intensive care comprise babies who are born prematurely, or who have trouble breathing, infections, complications during childbirth, and problems related to the mother’s illness. This thesis describes high-quality documentation related to nursing in the newborn intensive care unit. The literature review covers, in light of recent research, the importance of documentation when proceeding to follow-up treatment. The family's participation and consideration are important factors in newborn intensive care treatment. This thesis is thus focused on this particular viewpoint The aim of this thesis is to present new perspectives on documentation related to nursing in order to further develop the follow-up treatment practices in the newborn intensive care unit. Since follow-up treatment is always needed after a period of intensive care, the continuity of care should be ensured through good co-operation between the units and by avoiding any breaks in communication. Based on the gathered material, it is clear that documentation is a crucial part of patient safety. Documentation also guarantees the quality of care, and enables a seamless transition to follow-up care. From an ethical standpoint, documentation should reflect respect for the patient, a patient-oriented approach, and individuality. Other defining factors in documentation are the legislative and statutory requirements. According to the studies, the family forms an integral part of newborn intensive care and the consequent follow-up treatment. This should be reflected in the daily documentation tasks. As the patient moves on to follow-up care, diligent planning and co-operation with the family are required from the nursing staff. As reference material for our thesis, we have applied scientific nursing studies, such as Master’s theses, dissertations, and scientific articles. Our list of references includes both domestic and international source materials....

Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy patients’ experiences of counselling This thesis is part of the development project carried out in cooperation with Peijas Hospital and Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The purpose of this thesis was to study the experiences of robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) patients regarding the counselling they had received. The purpose was to obtain research data on sufficiency of guidance as well as development areas, on the basis of which the guidance could be developed towards a more patient-oriented approach. The aim was to convey new research data for working life as well as revise the written guidelines for RALP patients. This thesis was carried out as a qualitative analysis. The research data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The interviews were recorded after which they were transcribed, and the content was analysed by content analysis. The target group of the study consisted of the patients on ward 132 and surgical outpatient clinic 3 in Peijas Hospital. The sample comprised seven (n=7) RALP patients who were treated on ward 132. The patients on both wards were satisfied with the face-to-face counselling they had received. The written material was mainly clear and understandable, and the patients received enough material. The practical training with a ward nurse on using the catheter was partly regarded as insufficient. Coping at home caused problems for many patients and some of them needed to contact the ward after returning home. The respondents wished that the preoperative interview would include both discussing the postoperative issues as well as emphasising the importance of preparation for an operation. The patients hoped clearer guidance on medication and shorter waiting times. The proposed development areas for the written material were the supporting guidelines for coping at home. Another development proposal was to have a person available, whom the patients could contact after returning home if need be. The results of this thesis cannot be generalised due to the small sample but can be useful when developing counselling....

Aineisto koostui systemaattisen...
The aim of this study was to determine what is included in gerontological nursing according to literature as well as what are the factors that contribute to the empowerment of nurses in gerontological nursing. The material consisted of studies and research articles (n = 26) acquired by the method of systematic literature review. According to the results of this literature review, the emphasis in gerontological nursing is placed on ethical principles, respect for human dignity and humane treatment. Use of power and rigid organizational structures prevent the realization of the rights of the elderly patients and also weaken the empowerment of nurses. Sense of community and good management make good care and empowerment possible.Stimulating and aesthetic environment is noteworthy as a supporting factor in ethical care. A more humane approach is achieved by providing access to art and culture in health care facilities. Studies show that listening to music and singing are clearly beneficial in gerontological nursing. Factors contributing to the empowerment are connected with the leadership skills of the immediate manager, sense of community, paying attention to emotions, and education. Becoming aware of well-being at work and of ethical shortcomings forms the basis which enables theempowerment process. The empowerment of caregivers has a positive impact on patient care and therefore on the patients' satisfaction. In further studies it would be important to find out more empowering factors for nurses in gerontological nursing practice. An open discussion on ethical shortcomingsand feelings of the employees is advisable in gerontological work communities....
