Laurea University of Applied Sciences Abstract Laurea Lohja Degree Programme in Nursing Intovuori Elina, Silfver Saara, Turunen-Valve Tiina The Wellbeing Path of the Young Unemployed in Danger of Social Exclusion Year 2012 Pages 43 The purpose of this thesis was to examine how the welfare services function in Lohja area for the unemployed young being in danger of social exclusion, based on their own experience. Services contain all the services they utilize during their youth in their entirety. The purpose was to find a path the young use and to find out how the services are found. The answers gathered from the young were examined in order to find out how the services were experienced and how they could be improved. The purpose was also to offer improvement proposals. In the theory section of the thesis, terms such as wellbeing, unemployment and social exclusion were clarified. Also the service supply of Lohja area directed to the young was investigated. The thesis was made in co-operation with the Lohja Youth Office Linkki and the Youth Workshop and the thesis is a part of the project called Pumppu-PolkuPärjäin. The thesis was carried out with qualitative research method. The interviews were executed individually and the material was dealt with by an inductive analysis of the content As a conclusion one might say that the young respect their own family as a contributor of wellbeing. They experienced having received mainly good and satisfactory service. Support would have been desired earlier to some extent and the workshop period was wished to have been longer. The seeking for support was experienced to remain to a large extent the responsibility of the young person and his family. The young felt there was a threshold when seeking psychiatric help and a treatment was sought only when it was a necessity. The young also did not know when they were eligible to seek help from psychiatric services. In the future, attention should be paid to health care services such as mental health care. The seeking of treatment should be easier and the young should be given more information about different alternatives of treatment. The young experienced receiving most support from their parents and their circle of acquaintances. Active briefing of parents regarding different services providing services to the young would be advisable. A topic for further research could be to examine the causes for social exclusions among the youth. Keywords: unemployment, social exclusion, wellbeing...

Guide for tinnitus patients This thesis was carried out in co-operation between Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Helsinki Ear Institute as a quality development project. The main aim of the thesis was to produce a guide in Finnish for people with tinnitus or their relatives. The guide produced as a development project will provide first-hand information for tinnitus patients to influence their quality of living. It will also provide guidance how to find further information about coping with tinnitus. The thesis will point out the best ways in the process of making a patient guide. The aim with the thesis is to develop and increase the material concerning tinnitus. The guide will also provide consistent research information about treating tinnitus patients in Finland. Tinnitus is defined as a sensation of sound which does not come from an external source. It is often a whistling, squeaking or buzzing sound in the ear. Among adult population about 10-15% suffer from tinnitus and a few percent of them feel tinnitus disturbing. With tinnitus the patient may suffer also from hyperacusis meaning sensitivity to sound. Tinnitus can affect very negatively the quality of living. One of the symptoms with tinnitus can be sleeping and concentration problems as well as depression. These symptoms may affect the patient’s working life or being at home. The used material consisted of literature which included books about tinnitus and treatment, patient guidance, learning styles and a proper patient guide. Also various research papers were used as source material. For the future visions the material used was an expert interview which was carried out at Helsinki Ear Institute in December 2011. As an output of the thesis the guide with basic information about treating and coping with tinnitus was created. The graphic design was made by Mirva Malmgren, a student in Aalto-university. The theory part of the thesis itself can be the guide for tinnitus patients. The thesis will be published on a website developed by Tinnoff where articles and research papers about tinnitus can be found. The treatment methods for tinnitus are constantly developing so the website can be updated with more detailed specialised guides. Developing the website with Tinnoff can be a future thesis project. This thesis project started in January 2011 and ended in May 2012. The thesis was presented on 8th May 2012 at Laurea Tikkurila....

Social media as a channel of networking in The Transatlantic Dual Degree Program in Nursing The goal of the thesis was to create a channel for maintaining the networks between the participants of the Transatlantic Dual Degree Program in Nursing. The aim was to create such a network by using social media. The Transatlantic Dual Degree Program in Nursing has been active for five years; it is a project between Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland, Semmelweis University in Hungary, and Nazareth College of Rochester in the United States. During the exchange program the students have created networks with people in the three countries, and in order to maintain these networks we started a group on Facebook. We chose Facebook because it is a globally popular form of social media, and easy to use. With the help of the Facebook group, the participants of the Transatlantic Dual Degree Program in Nursing program are given a chance to maintain the already existing networks, create new ones, share information, pictures, and keep in touch with each other. Our goal is that the Facebook group will support international nursing and serve as a supportive connection when applying for a job abroad, or when planning to move abroad. To evaluate the functionality of the Facebook group and to see how it could work as a channel of networking, a survey was made by using an enquiry. The enquiry was sent to five test users from every participating country. The research was accomplished by using quantitative and qualitative research methods. The enquiry included twelve closed questions and one open question. The questions from one to eleven were created by using the Likert scale, and the evaluation scale consisted of five answer options: strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree. The goal was to survey how the Facebook group could serve as a networking channel and support system for international nursing. We also wanted to survey how the Facebook group could support the sharing, and development of the nursing know-how between the participants. By using the selected research methods we tried to find an answer for how the Facebook group could function in the future and serve its users in the perspective of nursing. Five test users were chosen from each participating country. All participants have either completed the Transatlantic Dual Degree program in Nursing, or are currently participating in the program. They were given two and a half weeks to use and evaluate the Facebook group and its content. After the given time period, they were asked to return the evaluation form by e-mail. We used Microsoft Excel Mac 2011 and content analyze to analyze the research results. The response rate in the research was sixty percent. The research results were promising when measuring the use of the Facebook group in the future. Most of the test users believed that the Facebook group could serve well or very well as a channel for networking (n=8/9). Most of the test users also believed that the Facebook group could serve as a good resource when developing international nursing. It was also gratifying that many users believed that the Facebook group could work as a place to share information and experiences. The research results also focused on the further development of the Facebook group, and in turn this would increase the willingness to use the group overall....

Preventing youth alienation - the significance of healthcare at school This thesis is a part of a wider project, Pumppu. More specifically, it is a part of a side project of Pumppu, which is called Polkupärjäin. Pumppu Polkupärjäin side project aims to develop ways to promote well-being of people. This project is financed with EAKR funding by the city of Hämeenlinna, Innopark, Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Socom, Turku University of Applied Sciences and Turku University. This thesis aimed to produce information on how the school healthcare system can recognise a youth in risk of alienation. The aim was to discover how school healthcare could aid in preventing alienation. The thesis attempted to find answers on how the school healthcare could help prevent alienation, learn to detect the signs of alienation and recognise an alienated youth. The research was carried out with the qualitative research method, which collects data with the focus group method. The research was carried out with a focus group interview. Lohja, Siuntio, Inkoo and Karjalohja form a joint health and social care area called LOST, and the interview was carried out in this area. The interview was tape recorded, transcribed and analysed with content analysis. The interview results show that there are numerous reasons for youth alienation. Cooperation of the school and the school healthcare system has a significant effect in preventing youth alienation. The interview results show that youth alienation is a multi-layered problem. The interview shows that prevention of youth alienation can be aided by supporting the parents, by recognising different learner types and providing drug education. The conclusion drawn from the research interview was that youth alienation is a multi-layered problem, strong cooperation with several parties is necessary in order the solve the problem and preventative procedures should start at an early stage. School healthcare has a key role in preventing youth alienation and recognising a youth at risk of alienation. Further research could be done on the school healthcare procedures and the attitudes of the school nurses towards prevention of youth alienation. The research could find out whether the resources allocated to the school healthcare system are sufficient....
