Empowering parenthood – Guide to pregnant and young children parents This thesis is part of the Luotain-project in Degree Programme in Social Services at Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The main objective of the project is to develop participatory and creative approaches and methods that promote welfare (Karkkunen 2011a). The thesis consists of a theoretical and a functional part. The purpose of this study was to create an empowering parenting guide to support families. The purpose of the guide is to help parents to recognize their own as well as families’ shared resources, and thus learn to use them better. We want to show the families that empowering resources are very ordinary things that will help you to get through in everyday life. Our goal was that the guide guides parents to reliable information as well as sources of assistance, if necessary. The theoretical part of our work consists of essential concepts and includes the family and parenting related phenomena, which are reflected in the everyday life of a family with children. As part of the thesis, we conducted a survey in three of the City of Helsinki's playgrounds, Filpus, Viikkari and Maasälpä. The survey revealed that 75% of the responding parents have experienced the baby-time in family challenging. 94% of respondents indicated that they identify their own resources, at least somewhat. Parents indicated that they need more information about, how to turn information into action and creating a support network, as well as the maintenance of a relationship. The functional part consists of empowered parenting guide. The guide is designed for parents of young children. The content of Empowered parenting guide has been produced based on this project report’s theoretical framework as well as the parent’s answers in the survey. The main theory that has been used is Aylaon Oftra’s BasicPh- coping theory. The aim has been to comply with the health data for the required quality criteria in creating the guide. We focused on content, but also the visual appearance of the guide. The guide describes in concrete terms what resources are and by small questions we instruct the reader to find his or her own resources. Our thesis is limited to the guide-making. Follow-up actions with this work, is to do a pilot with the guide to the playground leaders, parents and public health nurses. With the readers’ comments on the guide, we could develop it if necessary. Another development is to develop its availability. In the future we should consider the appropriate channel to distribute guides for the target group and to guide families’ awareness of the existence of the guide....

Documenting the care of an intensive care burn patient in Töölö Hospital Burn Unit - a guide for the new nursing employees and students This thesis is part of the quality improvement project between Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Töölö Hospital Burn Unit, the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUCH) during the years 2007- 2012. The purpose of this thesis was to create a guide for the Burn Unit’s new nurses and nursing students. The guide deals with documenting the care of an intensive care burn patient. The aim of this guide is to increase patient safety as well as to make documenting clearer and more harmonised. In Finland, intensive care burn patients are treated in Töölö Hospital and Kuopio University Hospital. A burn is an injury of the skin or the tissue underneath it and it is caused by heat, electricity or chemical substance. Burns are divided into three degrees depending how deep the burn injury is and the percentage area of the burn explains how large the burn injury’s area is. All deep burn injuries are treated surgically and superficial burn injuries are treated conservatively. The burn patient’s care combines both intensive care and wound care. The care of an intensive care burn patient is documented electrically with Picis CareSuite® programme. The guide tells how and when to document for example the pain treatment. The guide also explains what the written report should include, what is important to know when the patient goes to the operating theatre and how the doctor’s orders and the checkups of the patient’s state should be documented in the programme. The data acquisition, project plan and writing took place from February 2011 to January 2012. During this time two nursing students had their clinical training at Töölö Hospital Burn Unit. The thesis was presented on 10th January 2012 at Töölö Hospital....

The prevention, risk factors and care of obesity and diabetes in mental health rehabilitation work The purpose of this thesis is to update and increase the knowledge of diabetes and obesity as well as of its prevention and treatment among the mental health rehabilitees and people working with them. The thesis was carried out as part of the mental health rehabilitation project between Keski-Uudenmaan Sopimuskoti ry and Laurea University of Applied Sciences. People who work with mental health rehabilitees do comprehensive customer service but often the focus is on treating psychological disorders and hardly ever on somatic health. The rehabilitees’ symptoms are not always being inquired carefully enough, and the symptoms are easily explained by psychological or medical causes. That is the reason why somatic diseases may reach an advanced stage before they are diagnosed. Several mental health rehabilitees suffer from diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The thesis consists of a theoretical part and a practical part discussing diabetes and obesity. The theoretical part deals with the symptoms of the diseases, the prevention and treatment both generally and also from the viewpoint of mental health rehabilitees. We have used literature about healthcare, Duodecim medical database and treatment guidelines as source material. The practical part consists of a lecture and an electronic portfolio which is an abstract from the theoretical part. The goal of the lecture and electronic portfolio is to motivate the rehabilitees to prevent the diseases and treat them by themselves as well as to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle. We produce topical information about risk factors about obesity and diabetes for people who work with mental health rehabilitees. We also advise them about treatment methods which can be used in the mental health rehabilitees’ counseling. The electronic portfolio will be available for the personnel and rehabilitees. The lecture was held in February 2012 in the premises of Keski-Uudenmaan Sopimuskoti ry and there were 40 rehabilitees. We evaluate the effectiveness of the lecture through feedback form which was answered by 20 respondents. Some forms were answered in pairs. All respondents gained enough knowledge of both topics and 12 respondents gained new knowledge of the topics. Half of them believed that they will lead a healthier lifestyle. The electronic portfolio was also experienced useful among rehabilitees so that they can improve their knowledge of obesity and diabetes....

Guidance of first aid skills to the second year automotive students of the Hyria-vocational College This thesis is part of the Promotion of work ability and functional capacity among young people in vocational colleges project (NOPS 2010-2012). The purpose of the thesis was to advance students’ first aid and resuscitation skills in the automotive field of study. The aim was to organize an active day for young people to motivate them and to teach them skills to act in first aid situations in future. The thesis was functional. The functional part was consisted of a health event where the students were guided to act in first aid situations. First aid is a help what injured person gets at the scene. It can be a basic or emergency first aid. The guidance dealt with basic first aid and Layman’s resuscitation. The guidance was based on learning by doing- method. During the guidance the purpose of this method was to activate students to execute practical training as much as possible. One part of the thesis was a quantitative assessment. The effectiveness of guidance was measured with a structured questionnaire. The same questionnaire was filled both at the beginning and the end of guidance, in order to find out how much their skills had improved. In addition, the students evaluated their work health and safety skills, motivation and the execution of the event as the part of the final survey. The results showed that the health event had had an impact on the learning. The initial survey showed that the students knew quite a lot about the first aid. The final survey showed that learning had improved in every section, especially in the parts, where were functional parts within. The sections were resuscitation, wounds and burns, bone and muscle injuries and eye injuries. In general the event was considered successful. Most of the target group experienced that the event had been useful and raised the learning in first aid skills. However, motivation to implement skills that were learned was not optimal. There wasn’t concentration in every guidance situation. Guidance was experienced believable and functional. As a guidance method the learning by doing was experienced well. The day wasn’t too theoretical. A functional was experienced well. As a conclusion we can say that learning by doing is a good method to guide the vocational college students. To give a first aid class every now and then could be a development proposal....
