Developing documentation of patient information in the Töölö Hospital Burn Unit - The phase when a patient is referred from intensive care to the ward This thesis is part of the quality development project between Laurea University of Applied Sciences and the surgical field of the Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH) as well as Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) between 2007-2012. It is a project with the Töölö Hospital Burn Unit. The purpose of this project was to improve documentation of patient information and to create recommended practices for how to document important information. The aim was to produce integrated model of documentation for the phase when a patient is moved from intensive care to the ward inside the Burn Unit. The integrated model of documentation concerns transmitting necessary patient information in the moving phase and daily documentation of the ward patient information. In Finland yearly 40-60 people suffer serious burns which need an intensive care setting. Most of them are treated in University Hospitals of Helsinki and Kuopio where two Finland’s Burn Units are located. Treating a burn patient is a long process. Healing can be divided in an acute phase, a wound phase and a rehabilitation phase. Nancy Roper’s, Winifred W. Logan’s and Allison J. Tierney’s model of nursing which includes activities of daily living was applied in this thesis. The model of documenting patient information is based on these activities of daily living which were adapted to concern burn patient care. The process of making this thesis lasted for about a year. It started in September 2010 and was finished in December 2011. An important part of this process was practical training periods in the Töölö Hospital Burn Unit....

Postoperative tetraplegiapatient’s position management at the Trauma Intensive and Intermediate Care Unit of Töölö Hospital – a guide for new nurses and students This project report is part of the quality development programme between Laurea University of Applied Sciences and the operative profit center of the Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH), Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS). The aim of this progra which takes place during 2007-2012, is to improve the quality of evidence-based nursing in the actual de-velopment areas in working life. The objective of the project was to produce new information for students and nurses at the Trauma Intensive and Intermediate Care Unit of Töölö Hospital, and thus to facilitate the position therapy for postoperative tetraplegia patients. Furthermore, the goal was to standardize the prevalent practices in these care units in reference to position therapy. This report intends to present the position therapy methods used at the Trauma Intensive and Interme-diate Care Unit of Töölö Hospital and to show how these methods influence the care and the rehabilitation of the patients. The report will also serve as a guide for the position therapy of postoperative tetraplegia patients to nursing students and newly graduated nurses. The aim of the guide is to provide instructions based on scientific research and practices that have been found efficient in order to ensure individualized, safe and goodquality care. This project report concentrates on traumatic injuries and examines tetraplegia patient’s care from a physical point of view. Tetraplegia, i.e. quadriplegia, is caused by a lesion to the spinal cord or the brain as a result of an illness or an injury. Patients with tetraplegia require quick and specialized treatment. A cervical spine injury can be treated either operatively or conservatively. In Töölö Hospital, most tetraplegia patients are treated operatively. The surgery helps to support the cervical spine and to restore the shape of the spinal canal. Support-ing the cervical spine is particularly essential in terms of recovery and rehabilitation. The primary objective during intensive care is to treat the possible brain damage, hypovolemia, shock and bradycardia. Nevertheless, the likelihood of pressure sores and the importance of position therapy must also be taken into consideration. In terms of rehabilitation, it is crucial to achieve the correct and appropriate position therapy, as this may prevent the disadvantages of a static position. The therapy aims to promote vital functions, maintain sensory functions as well as inhibit skin lesions and joint malpositions in a bed patient. As many positions as possible are used in order to preserve maximum function. Position therapy is always patient specific, which enables catering to other potential injuries. This project was launched in collaboration with the Trauma Intensive and Intermediate Care Unit of Töölö Hospital in the autumn of 2010. In addition to the students, the project team included an advisory teacher and contact persons from the care units. During the process, the project was revised according to the suggestions provided to better suit the needs of the care units. The finished project was presented in May 2011. Key words: postoperative care, tetraplegia patient, position therapy, intensive care unit, in-termediate care unit, guide...

People in working life today as tomorrow´s elderly - How do 50-60-year-olds perceive elderly people´s loneliness? This thesis was carried out in Espoo city's project (Life into Years) the purpose of which was to prevent loneliness among elderly people. In this thesis conceptions and thoughts about elderly people's loneliness, factors connected to experiencing it and methods of alleviating it are described from 50—60-year-old-people's point of view. The aim of this thesis is to provide information that Espoo city can make use of when developing preventive and alleviative services for its citizens. In this thesis elderly people are defined as 65 years old or older. This thesis was carried out as a qualitative study and the material was collected by a semi-structured theme interview. The interviews were conducted in the spring 2010 for five Espoo citizens aged 50—60 years. No requirements were set for the interviewees' sex, profession or specific age. The findings were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The findings of this thesis are partially similar to the findings of previous research. Elderly people's loneliness is considered to be a negative and alarming phenomenon, which should be intervened by society. Factors that are considered to affect experiencing loneliness are per-sonal characteristics, aging-associated physical restrictions and decreasing of social relation-ships together with lower social appreciation, which is thought to be due to the decrease in elderly people’s productivity. Hobbies, holding on to personal interests and taking care of physical fitness are considered to prevent loneliness. Experiences of loneliness can be alle-viated by different kinds of activity groups with the help of which elderly people can feel unity and have experiences that stay in their mind as positive memories. It can be stated on the basis of the findings that an early-adopted active way of life, rewarding activities and early intervention in possible problems prevent the experiences of loneliness among elderly people....
