The purpose of the thesis was to study and examine the prevalence of surgical wound infections and the prevention of infections in perioperative care. The goal of the thesis was to produce evidence-based information on the prevention of surgical wound infections in perioperative care, focusing on the preoperative and intraoperative phases. The thesis focused on answering the following research questions: What factors affect surgical wound infections in perioperative care? Which methods can be used to prevent surgical wound infections? Laurea University of Applied Sciences was the client of the thesis. We created a poster for nursing students based on the theoretical basis and research results to support perioperative studies. The thesis was implemented as a descriptive literature review and content analysis was used as the method of data analysis. The selection of the materials was guided by the research questions. The thesis consisted of ten scientific studies and scientific research articles. The material was collected from electronic databases (Finna, Medic, EBSCO and PubMed). In the end, there was only little targeted and suitable material on the prevention of surgical wound infections was found over the past 10 years. We wanted to use mainly Finnish language research data in our thesis, but we had to add English language research data also. We chose four Finnish language and six English language scientific studies or scientific research articles. The results of the thesis were focused on asepsis, its lack or discrepancies, patient guidance and operating principles of operating room work. The research data showed that changing gloves and instruments significantly reduces the incidence of wound infection, at least in the operation of the abdominal area and in caesarean section. Moreover, based on the studies, we noticed the importance on antibiotic prophylaxis in the prevention of infections, where the results were significant. We were surprised by how small and simple actions can prevent most of surgical wound infections in perioperative care. As further research topics we suggest that the prevention of surgical wound infections in perioperative care could be studied more extensively. Further research could be conducted on the activities of patients, nurses, doctors and the entire multi-professional team and the influencing factors. Conducting research, publishing new research results changing practices if necessary and as well as addressing problems would decrease surgical wound infections and risk of getting wound infections....
