Laurea-University of Applied Sciences has been part of the VKK-metro program of early childhood education and care between the years 2008—2009; the thesis was carried out in the program. Municipalities in Helsinki region, the University of Helsinki, and the Center of Expertise on Social Welfare (SOCCA) have participated in this program. Its purpose is to study and develop themes regarding documentation and evaluation in early childhood education activities. This thesis was implemented in co-operation with daycare center Auringonkukka in Helsinki. The day care center´s developmental target was the developing of observation of children´s workshops, their documentation and evaluation. The aim of our thesis was to find out how committed the children are to work in a workshop and how the children experience the working in a workshop. This thesis has been conducted with qualitative research methods. The material collection was carried out with the help of LIS-YC (The Leuven involvement scale for young children) child observation and a theme interview. The material was analyzed with theory-based content analysis. Based on the findings the children´s commitment level changed depending on the activity. The findings indicate that work shops gave each child a possibility for new experiences and a chance to learn something new, even though the theme and the environment where familiar for the child. It was noticed that each child got some kind of satisfaction when working in a work shop. The findings show that the children have a good possibility to participate in workshop-based small group activities. The children could plan and carry out activities on their own and the grown-ups were in the back ground. They could use their creativity and influence on the end result. The children made the rules and the children considered their own role important in the work shop activity. In the work shop the children received more individual attention and they had a chance to finish their work in peace. Interaction especially with grown up´s and the attention received from grown up´s was for some children a part of the satisfaction. This affected some children´s commitment to the activity by strengthening it. Based on the findings the workshop activity should last a suitably long time and in the activity there should not too long breaks in order for the children to be committed to the activity. Also the number of children should be appropriate in relation to the number of adults so that the principle of personal attention is carried out as well as possible. Small group workshop activity provides for a grown up a good possibility to observe and evaluate the child....

"Voimaa luonnossa” : -Elämyksellinen leiri osana mielenterveyskuntoutujien kuntoutusprosessia
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2009)

"You can be wild, but you can’t hit"- activity-based boy group at Veromäki school in 2007-2008 as part of Pilari project This thesis was an activity-based project, which consisted of planning, executing and evaluating activities for a boy group of 5th graders at Veromäki school. This project was part of Pilari project, organized by Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The activity was conducted during the school years 2007 and 2008. The goal of this thesis was to examine the boys’ experiences about the group activity, which was included in the school day, and about the influence of this activity in terms of group spirit. The theory section of this thesis included the following themes: the need to have club activity at schools, school as a learning environment and activity-based groups. As the instructors were men and the group consisted of only boys, this thesis examined gender sensitive guidance methods and boy work. Through gender sensitivity, the notion of child-orientedness was studied. Since one of the key themes of this thesis was examining the group spirit of the boys, the theoretical context included also group dynamics and its related factors. The activity of the boy group consisted of activity-based sessions, which contained sports, cooking, exercises promoting co-operation and trust, and playing board games. In the activity group, sports were highlighted. The boy group was an open, activity-based group so that participating was voluntary. Altogether there were 20 sessions and the meetings were arranged at Veromäki school. The activity of the group was planned throughout the school year, and the wishes of the boys were taken into consideration. The instructors were two students of Bachelors of Social Services. The written and oral feedback was collected from the participants during the activities, and it was utilised in this thesis. Question forms and essays were used as feedback. In addition, oral feedback was collected after every session. The opinions of the boys were relatively similar. The boy group was congenial for the boys and the attendance was good through the sessions. The evaluation of the group spirit was a bit challenging, because the participants were not very productive in giving feedback. Because of that, it was difficult to make any general conclusions about the progression of the group spirit. Instructing the boy group gave the instructors very good experience in guiding activity-based groups and working in school environment....

Palveluohjaus osana naisten väkivallasta selviytymistä
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2009)
