“He is ultimately a kind boy” The illustration of the process how an Icehearts- team was gathered; On which grounds the children have been chosen? This thesis was carried out by the request of the organization Icehearts. Icehearts does preventative child welfare work with the help of team sports. Team is gathered up in co-operation with educational professionals, and it is meant for children with special needs. The gathering starts when children are in pre-school, at the age of six. The team consists of children from disadvantaged families. The actual Icehearts- activity starts when children go to school, where they support the child at school and in spare time. This thesis studied one particular Icehearts team and the aim was to produce information about the assembling of the starting group. The thesis had two purposes; the first aim was to illustrate how the process to gather the team occurred and the second aim was to study what kind of children have been chosen by the educational professionals to be a part of the team. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of how the chain of social exclusion starts and what signs in early childhood predict the threat of social exclusion in the future. Also it specifies to the protective features in child’s life that can secure him from the threat. Furthermore, the thesis also takes a glance at the importance of early intervention. The method of this thesis is qualitative. Material was gathered by using theme interviews and it was analyzed by themes. Four people were interviewed and they were all educational professionals. The interviewees were a special kindergarten teacher, a kindergarten teacher, a special educational teacher and the Icehearts– team’s educationist. This thesis observes what possible risks Icehearts- children had in their lives through material that was gathered. The results were coherent with previous studies and theories about child welfare risks. The thesis also studies why the professionals have seen that these particular boys are suited for Icehearts- activity. The thesis does not evaluate the effectiveness of Icehearts- team activity nor the efficiency of the intervention process. The purpose was to study if the professionals had a well-founded reason to worry for the child’s welfare. Results answered well to the research questions. According to the results, the network- that helped to choose the children- was adequate. It indicates that they found children that needed special care to support their positive growth and development. However, the help from social services were wanted as well. The results showed that the risks and the lack of protective features merged with each other. All selected children had more than one risk factor, which inflicted the threat to become socially excluded in the future....

Working via Active photo in the field of child welfare This thesis is a research of photography as a part a of child welfare worker’s normal weekday. I studied the usability of photography through Active photo, which has been developed for this thesis. The reason behind the Active photo is child welfare’s need to have a tool which aims to systematic and goal- oriented use of photography in child welfare work. Active photo is a tool to empowerment and socio- cultural animation in work of child welfare. Active photo is method where a child welfare worker takes pictures of the client. The main issue is the client’s desire to be in front of a camera. Without the desire Active photo cannot work. Socio- cultural animation, encountering and empowerment makes the basis of the Active photo. My thesis is an action based research and this way I have collected useful information from Active photo. The main character in my action based research is a preadolescent boy. With the main character we did for example snowboarding and parkouring. We had altogether seven different action occasions. Main character did all kind of action that he wanted to do. At the same time I was taking photos of the action. The goal of this thesis is show as much as possible objective information considering the Active photo. The interviews with the main character and his personal welfare worker I provided useful information considering Active photo. Through interviews I brought up the usability of Active photo as a welfare worker’s tool. My thesis shows that tt has all the possibilities to work as a tool in children’s home although more information on the usability is needed....

Haastavan lapsen kohtaaminen varhaiskasvatuksessa

Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka haastavasti käyttäytyvää lasta kohdataan varhaiskasvatuksessa. Opinnäytetyön pääkysymyksinä on, kuinka kasvattajat varhaiskasvatuksessa kohtaavat lapsen, joka käyttäytyy haastavasti, mitä on haastava käyttäytyminen sekä kuinka ohjataan haastavaa lasta. Pääkysymyksenä on myös, että mitä on haastavan lapsen hyvä kohtaaminen varhaiskasvatuksessa. Näistä kysymyksistä saatujen tulosten pohjalta laadin esitteen haastavan lapsen kohtaamisesta varhaiskasvatuksessa. Esite on tarkoitettu varhaiskasvatuksessa työskenteleville kasvattajille. Tutkimusmenetelmänä opinnäytetyössä käytän haastatteluja, jotka sopivat kvalitatiivisen tutkimuksen menetelmäksi. Haastatteluja toteutan kolme. Haastatellut henkilöt ovat Hyvinkään kaupungin varhaiskasvatuksen henkilökuntaa. Haastatteluiden avulla saan hyvää kokemusta ja tietoa haastavan lapsen kohtaamisesta. Haastattelut tuovat esiin jokaisen haastateltavan hiljaista tietoa haastavan lapsen kohtaamisesta. Jokaisella haastateltavalla on vankka kokemus varhaiskasvatustyöstä. Haastattelut tuovat esiin hyviä käytäntöjä haastavien lasten ja heidän vanhempiensa kohtaamisesta.
Haastatteluista käy ilmi, että haastavia lapsia on olemassa ja haastavan lapsen kohtaaminen vaatii kasvattajalta ammattitaitoa, kärsivällisyyttä, aitoa läsnäoloa ja välittämistä. Haastatteluissa nousee esiin myös haastavan lapsen vanhempien tukeminen ja ohjaaminen. Haastavan lapsen kohtaamisen tulisi olla aitoa, välittävää, läsnä olevaa, turvallista ja rajoja asettavaa kohtaamista. Kasvattajan tulisi huomiota lapsen omaan temperamenttiin ja lapsen luontaiseen tapaan toimia. Kasvattajan tulee kiinnittää huomiota myös omaan tapaansa toimia kohdatessaan lapsen, joka haastaa häntä käytöksellään. Lapsilähtöisyyden huomioiminen on tärkeää. Näistä edellä mainituista asioista muodostuvat opinnäytetyön tulokset. Niiden pohjalta toteutan haastavan lapsen kohtaamiseen tarkoitetun esitteen varhaiskasvattajille. He voivat perehtyä asiaan osittain myös tämän esitteen avulla ja saada itselleen uusia ajatuksia ja tapoja kohdata haastavasti käyttäytyvä lapsi....

On the road to dreams – Dreamcarpet as a tool to Person Centred Planning This thesis was carried out in cooperation with disability services of City of Vantaa. Its aim was to explore Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods and utilize this information to develop our own tool for communication. The data for the developmental process was collected by observing and interviewing instructors and customers at activity centers of City of Vantaa, as well as various specialists from The Finnish Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (FAIDD) and City of Helsinki. The prototype was developed with help of this collected material which was documented by photography and field notes. The prototype of our communication tool was based on the collected material. The prototype was test ran with the customers of City of Vantaa’s activity centers. The feedback from these test runs led to further development and resulted in the final output which was named as the Dreamcarpet (Tahtomatto.) The development process was evaluated through evaluation questions. The aim was to assess on which topics the communication tool is found beneficial and which features reduce the threshold of using the Dreamcarpet in everyday life. The Dreamcarpet is developed to Activity center’s needs but it can also be used in Person Centred Planning and Individual Budgeting. How to deal with sexuality is also an important theme in the thesis. The Dreamcarpet has many opportunities to be developed further which are discussed when the project is being assessed....

Opinnäytetyössämme tutkittiin kehittämishankkeen avulla taidelähtöisten menetelmien mahdollisuuksia syrjäytymiskehityksen ennaltaehkäisyssä. Tutkielman kohderyhmänä oli alkuopetusikäisten luokkaryhmä ja tarkastelemme aihettamme elämänhallinnantunteen näkökulmasta. Kehittämishankkeen tarkoituksena oli tuottaa toimintaa alkuopetusryhmälle ja tuottaa aiheesta opas erityisesti alkuopettajien käyttöön. Opasta voi myös soveltaa muihin ryhmiin ja eri-ikäisille. Aihe valikoitui yhteiskunnallisesta tarpeesta, joka on näkynyt pitkään syrjäytymis- ja koulukeskusteluissa sekä kasvattajakentän palautteena.
Kehittämishankkeemme tietoteoreettinen perusta muodostuu syrjäytymiskehitykseen vaikuttavista tekijöistä sekä taidelähtöisen toiminnan tarjoamista hyödyistä suhteessa näihin tekijöihin. Tarkastelemme yksilön, ryhmien, roolien sekä elämänhallinnan tunteen merkitystä syrjäytymiskehityksen kannalta. Nähdäksemme yksilön konkreettiset taidot, jotka vaikuttavat edellä mainittuihin tekijöihin, ovat terve itsetunto sekä sosiaaliset taidot. Taidelähtöisen toiminnan teoriassa painotimme yhteyttä hallinnantunteeseen ja yhteistoiminnallisuuteen. Taidelähtöisen toiminnan teoria vastaa hyvin myös kysymyksiin ryhmistä ja rooleista. Hallinnantunteen ja yhteistoiminnallisuuden läpi tarkasteltuna näkyy taidelähtöisen toiminnan potentiaali terveen itsetunnon sekä sosiaalisten taitojen kehityksessä.
Kehittämishankkeemme metodologia perustuu toimintatutkimukseen, joka koostuu tutkimussykleistä. Tutkimussyklit muodostuivat kehittämishankkeemme toiminnallisen osuuden ja lopputuotteen suunnittelusta kirjallisuuden sekä toimintakertojen pohjalta. Ensimmäiset tutkimussyklit koostuivat teorian hakemisesta ja yhteistyön aloittamisesta, jatkossa yhteistyöluokallemme järjestetyt toimintakerrat käynnistivät uudet tutkimussyklit kirjallisuuden kulkiessa mukana. Prosessin kuvaaminen ja arviointi eri näkökulmista on kehittämishankkeemme metodologinen perusta. Toimintakertamme sisälsivät erilaisia taidelähtöisiä kokonaisuuksia, jotka koostuivat kuvallisista, tarinallisista sekä ja draamallisista harjoituksista. Näiden toimintahetkien ja kokemustemme pohjalta tuotimme oppaan, joka soveltuu toiminnan suunnitteluun ja toteutukseen.
Lapsia ja nuoria koskevan syrjäytymiskeskustelun käydessä kiivaana oppaasta muodostui ajankohtainen työväline kasvattajien käyttöön niin sosiaali- kuin opetusalalla. Kehittämishankkeen teorian perusteella uskomme syrjäytymiskehitystä vauhdittavien tekijöiden olevan elämänhallinnantunnetta vahingoittavia ja taidelähtöisten menetelmien soveltaminen kasvatustyössä näyttäisi olevan toimiva keino ennaltaehkäisyyn yksilön syrjäytymiskehityksessä....

The educational partnership and participation in kindergarten in Vantaa experienced by parents: “It’s important that information goes both directions naturally = child’s benefit.” The purpose of this thesis was to solve out the parental expectations and opinions about educational partnership. Also the purpose was to research contributory factors for parent’s participation from parent’s point of view. The thesis was made in co-operation with a kindergarten unit in Vantaa. The theoretical basis includes parts of early childhood education and its meaning to welfare of children and families. It includes as well parent’s participation in early childhood education and communication between parents and employees. The educational partnership is handled as professional interaction, parental participation and a mission of shared education. The research was made using a half-structured questionnaire for all parents in the kindergarten in autumn of 2013. The return percentage was 26,7 % which was low. Part of the material was analyzed using statistical methods. The open reply section was analyzed using the content analysis. Openness, daily conversations and support is expected from the educational partnership. Parents consider that; trust and respect, communication, employers’ interest and professionalism and child’s benefit as good things in the educational partnership. The educational partnership is hardly referred as with its name but the principals of partnership are experienced to actualize strongly in co-operation. The interaction between parents and employees is a precondition for the educational partnership. Parts needing developing and essential is paying attention to parents, passage of situations, sufficient information and communication as well as child’s development. Parents prefer to participate to activities which are dedicated at them. Prioritizing and informing in time as well as flexibility contribute their participation....
