The physical activity goals and how they are reached at private sport kindergartens in Kerava Today there is a lot of discussion about the decreased physical activity of children. Children do not get daily exercise as they should according to the national physical activity recommendations. The physical activity of children is very important because it has a huge effect on the comprehensive development of children. Parents and early childhood educators have a big role in getting children to take part in physical activity every day. It is also important that children become inspired of physical activity. Physical activity will form an essential part of life if people get positive experiences of it in early childhood. My thesis was carried out at kindergarten Kieppi and kindergarten Pomppu. Kieppi and Pomppu are private sport kindergartens in Kerava. Special attention in given to the kindergartens’ physical education goals which are presented in the early childhood education plan. The main research question of this thesis is to find out how physical education goals come true at Kieppi and Pomppu. The other questions are to find out how physical education affects children’s development, what kind of methods the workers use and how the workers would develop their physical education. The research environment is presented at the beginning of the theory part. Furthermore, the theoretical framework of the thesis is based on physical education and its goals, child-orientedness, children’s development and early childhood educator’s activity. Research methods used in this qualitative thesis are theme interview and observation. The interviews were made with workers of the kirdergartens and observations were made during physical activity sessions. These two research methods which was analysed in order to answer the research questions. Theory-driven content analysis was used in this thesis. When comparing the research results to kindergartens’ physical education goals, it seems that these goals were reached well. A monthly physical activity plan is followed at the kindergartens so it is easier to work according to the physical education goals. The results also show that varied physical activity has a clear effect on children’s development. The development seems to be comprehensive. In addition, the results show that early childhood educators have many ways to carry out physical education. They want to offer the children multifaceted and meaningful physical activity. The development proposals by the workers are the following: physical activity without planning, more exercising outdoors, the use of sport tools and to take part in educations....

More impetus! Promoting physical education in a collaborating kindergarten by practical means This practice-based dissertation concentrates on physical education as a part of early childhood education. The purpose is to improve physical education in the collaborating kindergarten and, with the aid of the material provided to the staff, to ensure its quality in the future. The impetus to this dissertation was the present alarming state of the physical exercise activities of children and young people. With the PC screen stealing time from outdoor activities and play time, there are now more children in a poor physical condition than ever before. The objective is to give customers of the kindergarten concerned, that is, the children, as versatile and positive a picture of physical exercise as possible and thus help them make it part of their daily life. The collaborating kindergarten was a small private kindergarten in Helsinki where I worked during the practical period of the dissertation. The dissertation is divided into two sections: 1) 10 physical exercise sessions targeted at children during the six-week practical period, and 2) material produced based on these sessions aimed at making it easier to carry out versatile physical education. All 18 of the kindergarten’s children aged from 2 to 5 years participated in the practical period. The contents of the sessions were varied and the basic idea was to make children discover the joy of physical exercise. The settings of the physical exercise sessions included the kindergarten’s hall, the playground, the forest park and the school gym. In the guided activities, the focus was on physical activity games and the aim was to also encourage children in their own mutual physical activity games in the spirit of traditional outdoor games. The material intended for the staff was produced according to their wishes, with the aim of making it as easy as possible to use in their daily work. The outcome includes physical activity game cards and a compact guide book, which contains information on physical exercise intended for early childhood education professionals and encourages educators to improve their own training skills....

Vili the mouse and Siiri the pig - Reinforcing chilren's language development in the everyday life in day care This functional thesis focuses on children’s language development and its reinforcement in the everyday life of a kindergarten. The thesis was carried out in co-operation with a private sector kindergarten. The project consisted of four parts that were carried out with a few of the child croups of the kindergarten. The purpose of these activities was to reinforce and activate the children to use language. The perspective of this thesis is the employees, so even though the activities were held with children the main focus was to find easily useable methods for employees in the everyday rush of the day care. In addition of the activities, material for this thesis was gathered by observing the workers in the kindergarten. The activities were selected according to my own preference but also because they did not come up during the observation period. The methods used with children were reading in a small group that meant basically reading a book with a group of kids. After the reading children were asked to paint something from the story just read, the idea was that during painting the story got more depth. Other method used were blind sounding, traditional ship loading both with animals and letters. The children also made their own rhyme about Vili the mouse and Siiri the pig, which had the honour to be part of the title of this thesis. The thesis plan was presented in February 2012, after which, on March 2012, the execution of the method part of the thesis started. The realisation took three weeks during witch the activities were carried out two times with different age groups, except the rhyme making as it took a week to do with one group. Before the actual active part of this thesis, a contract of it was made with the kindergarten and the parents of the children participating in the activities were informed. The activity parts of the thesis were filmed so that afterwards it would be easier to describe the methods more properly. The activities and methods used in this thesis were also evaluated by a kindergarten teacher working in that day care centre. To support the methods used there is theory about human development, interaction, supporting language development and the relation between kindergarten and language development. The results of this thesis are likely to be most valuable for the kindergarten where the activities were held. However, many of those methods observed and used are most likely found in most of the kindergartens in Finland. Also the methods used are of that sort that they are useable for everyone and can be constructed easily....

Rajoitustoimenpiteet lastensuojelulaitoksissa- Tilastoja ja työntekijöiden kokemuksia
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2012)
Tiedonkeruu lastensuojelulaitosten johtajilta suoritettiin puhelinhaastatteluilla tammikuussa 2012.

Work community in action! Improving welfare at work by using functional methods The objective of our thesis was to support welfare at work by using functional methods. We defined our subject to cover work community’s effect on welfare at work. We executed our thesis to the employees of intensified service centers unit. We led six sessions to the work community where we used functional methods, especially drama. In our activity we went through themes related to welfare at work, which we had chosen. We dealt with these themes by using different exercises and creating conversations. Our thesis was part of Voimaa taiteesta – project which aims to support using art in the field of welfare. In our thesis we chose themes related to welfare at work. These themes were communality, interaction, differences in work community and loyalty. In our theoretical part of the thesis we examine influence of the chosen themes on welfare at work. We also examine welfare at work in general and combining art and welfare nowadays. In our thesis we used mostly drama as a functional method. In our theory we have examined background and the possibilities of using functional methods and drama. The goal of our thesis was to go through the chosen themes and stir up thoughts about those via activity. We also intended to support the employees to get to know each other better. Furthermore our goal was to develop as leaders of a group and functional methods. Our eval-uation methods were observation and the feedback from employees. We observed phenomena during activity and made a questionnaire to the employees in the beginning and at the end of our activity. We also asked feedback from them at the end of every activity session. Based on our evaluation we managed to stir up conversation and thoughts about the chosen themes. Feedback from the employees proved that the activity helped them to get to know each other and it was experienced as a nice change. Our observations in the activity and the feedback from the employees proved that during the activity it was possible to talk about things that are important to work community and discuss different opinions. The project allowed us to develop planning and leading activities. It also gave us valuable professional experience. In addition, our ability to work together improved....

From creative methods towards success and a better self-esteem - The development of self-esteem and support for it at an early age The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was to try different kind of creative methods that can be used to support the development of the child's self-esteem at an early age. I also observed child-adult interaction in the daycare. I felt that the topic is important, because everyone who completes a degree in social services will notice that in basic job description this subject’s management is a major part of the work. Creative methods are an excellent way to work with children and their parents, and using these methods will help those working in social services develop as professionals. The thesis was made in spring of 2012. The exercises related to the thesis were carried out in round the clock –kindergarten in pre-school group, which is located in Vantaa. There were nine directing times and the group was open because the day care center was open round the clock. The goal was to find methods, which will be practical and produce feelings of joy and pleasure for the children. I also wanted that the methods are easy to use in the day care center in practice. In the sessions different kind of methods were tested from telling stories to physical playing and the activities were carried out as much as possible from the child’s point of view. Children were planning the activities with me from the beginning and sessions were accomplished with respect for the child and with a talking way. The theoretical part consists of the relevant research, technical literature, and Definition of the concepts of self-esteem and child-orientedness. The evaluation methods used were my own learning diary, observation and feedback I got from children and adults. The methods of the thesis were all effective and rewarding. When the children participated in the planning from the beginning, the sessions were full of success and joy. No one was forced to participate in my exercises, but I think that children who took part after a little motivation-talk, they received most for themselves. As an instructor I experienced a lot of success as well as moments of disappointment, after all did not go according to plan. However, I learned to live in the moment and lose control to create a new kind of sessions, which could become richer moments than I was expecting. The most popular method I used in exercises was clearly telling stories for adult. The method was already familiar to the staff and children enjoyed a lot when their stories got attention and written. I observed also that the trust-activities were important and impressive events for children. All moments were successful because of their child-orientedness and interaction. Methods can be recommended for everyday life in day care. Child and adult interaction is one of the main cornerstones in support of self- esteem development. Positive encouragement and also discussing and accommodating atmosphere provide security and mutual trust....

Competencies of a Bachelor of Social Services and crisis work - do they match? The competencies of a Bachelor of Social Services should meet the demands of working life. The purpose of this thesis was to find out how well were the bachelor´s studies known among the crisis workers of Suomen Mielenterveysseura crisis centers, and what their attitudes towards the education were like. I also wanted to find out whether the competencies of a Bachelor of Social Services met the demands of crisis work. The theoretical framework includes a discussion of the Bachelor´s studies and the main context of the crisis work. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in the study. The results indicated that the content of the education of Bachelor of Social Services was still quite unknown among the crisis workers. There were only a few clear opinions of Bachelor´s studies and most of the crisis workers thought that working experience, obtained after education, was more important than the education itself. Both Ethical and client work competencies were regarded as the most important. The organization and legislation of social services competence was considered important, because it consisted of knowledge of the social service system and client guidance. The importance of critical and participating community work shared the opinions of the informants. Research based competence was needed occasionally in project organization and in researches, and especially in cases, where crisis worker used new information in order to adapt to changes in the working environment. Management competence did not seem to equal the demands of management skills needed in crisis work leadership. The crisis workers considered the social worker´s personality important in client work and in coping with work in general. The informants regarded bachelor´s studies at a University of Applied Sciences as defective, because of the inadequacy of therapeutic and specific crisis work methods. According the crisis workers the Bachelor’s contribution to crisis work will become better, if more specific details of crisis work and therapeutic methods are included in the curriculum. Keywords: crisis work, Bachelor of Social Services, qualification, crisis worker....
