"You can be wild, but you can’t hit"- activity-based boy group at Veromäki school in 2007-2008 as part of Pilari project This thesis was an activity-based project, which consisted of planning, executing and evaluating activities for a boy group of 5th graders at Veromäki school. This project was part of Pilari project, organized by Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The activity was conducted during the school years 2007 and 2008. The goal of this thesis was to examine the boys’ experiences about the group activity, which was included in the school day, and about the influence of this activity in terms of group spirit. The theory section of this thesis included the following themes: the need to have club activity at schools, school as a learning environment and activity-based groups. As the instructors were men and the group consisted of only boys, this thesis examined gender sensitive guidance methods and boy work. Through gender sensitivity, the notion of child-orientedness was studied. Since one of the key themes of this thesis was examining the group spirit of the boys, the theoretical context included also group dynamics and its related factors. The activity of the boy group consisted of activity-based sessions, which contained sports, cooking, exercises promoting co-operation and trust, and playing board games. In the activity group, sports were highlighted. The boy group was an open, activity-based group so that participating was voluntary. Altogether there were 20 sessions and the meetings were arranged at Veromäki school. The activity of the group was planned throughout the school year, and the wishes of the boys were taken into consideration. The instructors were two students of Bachelors of Social Services. The written and oral feedback was collected from the participants during the activities, and it was utilised in this thesis. Question forms and essays were used as feedback. In addition, oral feedback was collected after every session. The opinions of the boys were relatively similar. The boy group was congenial for the boys and the attendance was good through the sessions. The evaluation of the group spirit was a bit challenging, because the participants were not very productive in giving feedback. Because of that, it was difficult to make any general conclusions about the progression of the group spirit. Instructing the boy group gave the instructors very good experience in guiding activity-based groups and working in school environment....

Palveluohjaus osana naisten väkivallasta selviytymistä
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2009)

SOMETHING SCARY HAPPENED TO YOU – childrens´s crisisbooklet to Hyvinkää Crisis Center The purpose of this thesis was to find out how to support a child who has faced a sudden crisis. The target group of the study consisted of 4-8 year old children or children who are just learning to read. The research method was qualititave, with features of practical survey. The theoretical framework included crisis theory, which deals with crisis in the adult life. It can be applied to children, when the child and the development phase of his or her characteristic way to deal with and react to a sudden event are taken into account. The focus in this thesis is crisis created by a sudden event. The study was completed in co-operation with Hyvinkää Crisis Center. They ordered a booklet, which is intended to act as a tool for 4-to 8-year-old children to support them after a sudden crisis. It is recommended that the child goes through the booklet with an adult. The booklet has pictures that small children can look at and texts that a child who is just learning to read can read alone or together with an adult. The booklet is intended to facilitate child-adult discussion and to act as a tool to help the child to express his or her thoughts and feelings after a sudden crisis. This booklet is designed to help children deal with and go through a sudden crisis situation. Children's crisis booklet contains pictures drawn by children, children's own thoughts and the text part made into a nursery rhyme. The text is written by us. Drawings were made in a daycare center in Hyvinkää, where we instructed an activity moment for children. In this activity moment, we arrenged a play based on a nursery rhyme. Children were divided into adult-guided groups, where they drew pictures about the nursery rhyme and the play. We also had a discussion with children and their thoughts were written up. The nursery rhyme and pictures are depicting the phases of a crisis. In the beginning, everything is fine, until a sudden event comes along. According to the crisis theory, an event can cause a shock, followed by a reaction, whichafter one goes through the event and finally accepts what has happened as a part of life. After that, one can become reoriented to a new phase of life. This study includes a theory part and an activity report focusing on making of the booklet. Also interviews were conducted to receive a pre-evaluation of the booklet and these interviews were included in the interview report of the thesis. The interviewees were all professionals in education, socialwork, nursing and crisis work. As a result of this study, it can be stated that there are many more additional ways to use this booklet than what was originally intended. The booklet can be creatively applied to many kinds of situations. This type of Finnish-language material has rarely been published. In general, a variety of materials were experienced useful when working with children. The interviewees, based on their client's needs, also pointed out proposals for the improvement of the crisis booklet. Child's ability to understand and deal with tragic events is often underestimated and overlooked in a crisis. The child is always dependent on adult support to help him or her go through the difficult issues. That is why we feel it is very important to promote crisis awareness in adults and among children at schools, day care centers and at home....
