Twist your tongue - Supporting children’s language development in day care center’s small group sessions The idea of this functional thesis came from workers of the day care center. The purpose was to support children`s language development in small group of day care center. There were six different kinds of activity sessions that took place in municipal day care center in Nurmijärvi. The plan of the thesis was presented in May 2012, municipality of Nurmijärvi accepted the research permission in January 2013 and the activity sessions were held in March 2013. All six activity sessions took a very intensive three week period. Activity sessions consisted of handicraft skills, exercise and fairy tales sessions. The small group consisted of seven 3-6-year-old children. The age distribution of the children was very challenging. The aim was that children would learn language skills by playing and having fun. The employees would get an already planned package that consisted of activity sessions which supported children`s language development. The employees can modify activity sessions for their own purpose. PCS-pictures were used a little bit in the activity sessions. Pictures help the children with language disorders. The kindergarten teacher of the small group participated in the activity sessions and she also evaluated sessions by filling in a form. The student kept her own personal learning diary where she marked her thoughts and observations. Children also gave feedback after the activity sessions. There were conversations with them and they told what was fun and what was not so fun. All these three feedbacks and evaluations were used to assess the aims. Observations were also evaluated based on the theory that was used in this thesis. The theoretical part of the thesis included early childhood education, language development of 3-6-year-old children, language disorders, supporting language development and small group pedagogy. All this theoretical information was used to plan and carry out the activity sessions. The making of the thesis was challenging because the activity sessions and the material for them had to be planned and produced from scratch by one person. In the writing process the privacy of the children and the workers had to be considered very carefully. Some of the identifiable features had to be left out from the thesis. It was important to try new methods and consider why something failed....

Use of statutory leaves in informal care in the city of Järvenpää In this Thesis the use family caregivers` statutory leaves in Järvenpää were explored. The municipality needed information about the subject because the usage of statutory leaves was scanty. In order to cope with the work the family caregivers should use their right for the statutory leaves. The intention of this thesis was to explore ways of arranging statutory leaves in the city of Järvenpää by interviewing the family caregivers. The aim of this thesis was to describe the wishes and opinions of the family caregivers about the arrangement of the statutory leaves. The study was qualitative. The material was collected by interviewing seven family caregivers who took care of an over 65- year old relative. With the help of the theme-interviews family caregivers` opinions and hopes were well found. The material was analyzed by using inductive content analysis. Three themes were considered important: realization of the statutory leaves, promoting and preventive factors of using such leaves and statutory leaves in the future. The results showed that the statutory leaves was hardly used, mainly because of the shortage of suitable care arrangements. Family caregivers pointed out that the current care forms did not respond to their needs. Based on the interviews, the main developing targets were related to the services for the statutory leaves in the municipality of Järvenpää. We hope that the municipality benefits from the thesis when it develops its informal care....

"Kullan arvonen systeemi" : Perheiden kokemuksia Parasta Lapsille ry:n lasten viikonlopputoiminnasta
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2013)
Opinnäytetyössäni tutkin perheiden kokemuksia Parasta Lapsille ry:n lasten viikonlopputoiminnasta. Tutkimusaiheeni lähti liikkeelle, kun otin yhteyttä Parasta Lapsille ry:hyn ja pyysin heiltä opinnäytetyöaihetta. Aihe kiinnosti, sillä olen ollut mukana heidän perhetoiminnassaan aiemmin. Lasten viikonlopputoiminta on toimintamuotona melko uusi.
Lapsille taas toiminta on hyvä tapa kehittää heidän sosiaalisia taitojaan.

(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2013)
Opinnäytetyössämme tutkitaan vanhempien lapsilleen tekemän haastattelun avulla viisivuotiaiden lasten kokemuksia, vaikuttamismahdollisuuksia sekä toiveita unelmaleikistään päiväkodissa. Opinnäytetyömme tarkoituksena on päästä sisälle lapsen ajatusmaailmaan leikistään päiväkodissa sekä herättää päiväkodin aikuiset pohtimaan lasten leikkiä sekä osallisuutta leikin suunnittelussa ja toteutuksessa.
Opinnäytetyömme aiheen saimme Vantaan kaupungilta, jonka varhaiskasvatuspalveluiden asiantuntijoiden kanssa teimme yhteistyössä lapsen leikkiin liittyvän haastattelulomakkeen. Opinnäytetyömme pohjautui vantaalaisille lapsille ja nuorille suunnatun vaikuttajapäivän alatapahtumana järjestettävään Mini Vaikuttaja-viikkoon. Tapahtuma oli suunnattu 5-6–vuotiaille Vantaan kaupungin varhaiskasvatuspalveluja käyttäville lapsille. Opinnäytetyömme kohderyhmänä olivat viiden vantaalaisen päiväkodin viisivuotiaat lapset, jotka osallistuivat vuoden 2012 Mini Vaikuttaja-viikkoon. Lapset osallistuivat tutkimukseemme anonyymisti vastaten laatimamme haastattelulomakkeen kysymyksiin kotona vanhempien avustuksella.

“He is ultimately a kind boy” The illustration of the process how an Icehearts- team was gathered; On which grounds the children have been chosen? This thesis was carried out by the request of the organization Icehearts. Icehearts does preventative child welfare work with the help of team sports. Team is gathered up in co-operation with educational professionals, and it is meant for children with special needs. The gathering starts when children are in pre-school, at the age of six. The team consists of children from disadvantaged families. The actual Icehearts- activity starts when children go to school, where they support the child at school and in spare time. This thesis studied one particular Icehearts team and the aim was to produce information about the assembling of the starting group. The thesis had two purposes; the first aim was to illustrate how the process to gather the team occurred and the second aim was to study what kind of children have been chosen by the educational professionals to be a part of the team. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of how the chain of social exclusion starts and what signs in early childhood predict the threat of social exclusion in the future. Also it specifies to the protective features in child’s life that can secure him from the threat. Furthermore, the thesis also takes a glance at the importance of early intervention. The method of this thesis is qualitative. Material was gathered by using theme interviews and it was analyzed by themes. Four people were interviewed and they were all educational professionals. The interviewees were a special kindergarten teacher, a kindergarten teacher, a special educational teacher and the Icehearts– team’s educationist. This thesis observes what possible risks Icehearts- children had in their lives through material that was gathered. The results were coherent with previous studies and theories about child welfare risks. The thesis also studies why the professionals have seen that these particular boys are suited for Icehearts- activity. The thesis does not evaluate the effectiveness of Icehearts- team activity nor the efficiency of the intervention process. The purpose was to study if the professionals had a well-founded reason to worry for the child’s welfare. Results answered well to the research questions. According to the results, the network- that helped to choose the children- was adequate. It indicates that they found children that needed special care to support their positive growth and development. However, the help from social services were wanted as well. The results showed that the risks and the lack of protective features merged with each other. All selected children had more than one risk factor, which inflicted the threat to become socially excluded in the future....

Working via Active photo in the field of child welfare This thesis is a research of photography as a part a of child welfare worker’s normal weekday. I studied the usability of photography through Active photo, which has been developed for this thesis. The reason behind the Active photo is child welfare’s need to have a tool which aims to systematic and goal- oriented use of photography in child welfare work. Active photo is a tool to empowerment and socio- cultural animation in work of child welfare. Active photo is method where a child welfare worker takes pictures of the client. The main issue is the client’s desire to be in front of a camera. Without the desire Active photo cannot work. Socio- cultural animation, encountering and empowerment makes the basis of the Active photo. My thesis is an action based research and this way I have collected useful information from Active photo. The main character in my action based research is a preadolescent boy. With the main character we did for example snowboarding and parkouring. We had altogether seven different action occasions. Main character did all kind of action that he wanted to do. At the same time I was taking photos of the action. The goal of this thesis is show as much as possible objective information considering the Active photo. The interviews with the main character and his personal welfare worker I provided useful information considering Active photo. Through interviews I brought up the usability of Active photo as a welfare worker’s tool. My thesis shows that tt has all the possibilities to work as a tool in children’s home although more information on the usability is needed....
