Nowadays even parents with immigrant backgrounds have a positive attitude towards the education and career of their daughters. Subsequent to the increase in multiculturalism in Finland employers have a more positive attitude to recruiting immigrants. The research shows that among other factors the religion, culture, appearance, education and work experience of the applicant have an effect on getting employment. Nonetheless the applicant's inner motivation and attitude towards working were considered to be the most important factors in finding employment. We believe that this generation has and will develop these particular attributes and is willing to advance and succeed in both fields of education and working life....

Customer-oriented management tools and customer profitability in an equipment rental company The purpose of this thesis was to examine customer profitability in a small equipment rental company. The company has a large and loyal customer base but in the past years the case company has struggled with its profitability as competition has increased. The research approach was constructive case research. The purpose was to analyze and develop the company's customer profitability. The main objective of the research was to calculate customer profitability and to create a calculation model for case company’s use but also a model that other equipment rental companies could utilize. The research was carried out in close cooperation with the company’s personnel. Costing was carried out in accordance with the key principles of activity-based costing. The research included activity analysis, determination of cost drivers and customers groups and also customer profitability analysis. The empirical data was collected from interviews, observation, informal discussions, company´s ERP system and reported income statement of year 2012. In order to find out working hours spent on service activities survey of time use was carried out among the personnel. Personnel costs were targeted to activities based on this time use survey. The outcome of this research were income statements of the defined customer groups. According to the results all customer groups were profitable. However, profitability was found to be different in all customer groups. This discovery indicates that the customer profitability depends on customer’s business field. In all customer group’s the most significant costs were due to cost of product sales, as well as service activity costs such as customer register management, equipment maintenance, repair and invoicing. The results show that the case company's pricing requires review and re-evaluation especially in sales products. In order to achieve adequate profit margin acquisition cost data should be monitored and its availability for pricing purposes ensured e.g. systematically entering purchase prices in to the company’s ERP system. Suggested topics for further research include examination the most appropriate and reliable method for calculating product cost of construction machinery. The other topic of research could be customer profitability analysis in another similar company where purpose is to test business field based customer segmentation suitability and impact on profitability....

Concept Analysis of Supplier Evaluation The purpose of this thesis was to clarify the concept of supplier evaluation and identify its many attributes. Supplier evaluation is a wide-ranging concept and it can mean many different things to different people. In this study Walker´s and Avant´s concept analysis model was used as a research method. It is an eight-step analysis method that originates from Wilson´s (1963) classic eleven-step concept analysis method. The theoretical framework of the study deals with supplier evaluation. One step of the concept analysis was to identify all possible uses of supplier evaluation concept in Finnish and English literature, scientific writings, articles and studies. While paying attention to the different uses of the concept, a wide range of related concepts and borderline cases were found. From the different uses of the supplier evaluation concept the defining attributes were determined and the concept´s antecedents and consequences were identified. The data was gathered from a variety of sources and databases. Based on the researched data supplier evaluation´s defining attributes were determined to be surveying and identifying, making choices, comparing, examining, defining, measuring, controlling and monitoring. The antecedents were identified as a seller, a buyer, a need to buy, a plan to buy, and human resources, methods, instructions, knowledge, skills and training to evaluate. The consequences of supplier evaluation were identified to be the right choice of suppliers, elimination of unnecessary suppliers, improvement of product, quality and price knowledge and of supplier market intelligence, strengthening of cooperation between the buyer and supplier, development of sourcing, development of supplier, and improved competitiveness. The results of the study are intended for the benefit of SULOIN project (Sustainable Logistics Solutions Through International Networking), in which Laurea University of Applied Sciences is involved in developing Southern Finland´s logistics clusters, knowledge structures, competitiveness and sustainability....

Will Vinyl Save the Record Shop? Case: Combat Rock Shop The use of the Internet as a tool for listening to music in recent years has led to a noticeable decline in CD sales. This phenomenon has made it difficult for many record labels and record stores to operate and it can be considered as a threat to the entire industry. Vinyl records however, have increased their share in the record market. This study investigates the growing popularity of vinyl using semi-structured interviews as a method. Three people operating in the record industry are interviewed for this study to give their views on the subject both today and in the future. The study was limited to the domestic market. Helsinki based record shop, Combat Rock Shop, was used as a Case company. The results of the study showed that vinyl record market shares are on the rise, but are on the whole small. The current status is achieved mostly by marginal subcultures and music enthusiasts, which is also going to be the situation in the future. CD is not considered the future format of music in the physical form, consumers prefer vinyl. On the other hand, a large mass consume music digitally over the Internet. On a large scale vinyl is neither the savior nor the future of the record industry, but it will play a significant role for certain individuals, specific record stores and labels....

The purpose of this paper is to study ways of promoting creativity at work. It is possible to increase creativity by making improvements to the work environment. More creativity boosts innovativeness and can give a company a competitive advantage. The focus is on leadership, working atmosphere and pay. The report builds on literature and recent studies on creativity. An experimental study was used to determine the effect of monetary pay on creative work versus effort-driven work. A drawing task was used to measure creativity. The participants of the test-group competed against each other for a reward for the three best pictures. A control group did the same test without the possibility to be rewarded for good performance. All participants did an effort-driven task with and without a performance-related reward. The results showed that given the possibility of a small monetary reward, the participants performed better on both the effort-driven task as well as the task requiring creativity. This implies that you can use small bonuses to increase creativity. Two interview studies were used to determine if the theories of the researchers can be applied in real-life work environments. The results confirmed that a positive work atmosphere and encouraging leadership affect creativity beneficially. A negative work atmosphere and bad leadership can have a significantly damaging effect on creativity. Creativity thrives in a reassuring and stress-free environment. A manager increases creativity by encouraging employees to be creative and by giving much positive feedback in addition to constructive feedback. The findings have been used to make a guide for increasing creativity at work. The guide gives practical advice on how to promote creativity. Anyone can apply these methods in their own work environment. The guide is especially useful for managers, who are in a good position to improve the work environment....

Google Trendsin käyttö tulevaisuuden ennakoinnissa
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2013)
maailmassa, jossa jokainen haluaa olla aina askeleen edellä kilpailijoitaan. Ihmiset jättävät jokaisesta tekemästään internet-hausta jälkiä, ja näistä jäljistä voidaan saada selville jo muodostuneet, tai muodostumassa olevat, trendit. Tutkimusosuudessa...
Using Google Trends in future prediction The aim of this thesis is to study the possibilities of future predicting through Google Trends. Predicting the future is, in the business world particularly, more important today than ever before since WE ARE living in A rapidly changing world where it’s crucial to be one step ahead of your competitors. From every internet search you make you’ll leave a trace, and these traces can eventually be identified as either current or becoming trends. The research section was divided into four parts; travel, car sales, presidential elections, mobile phone operating systems. Through these different examples IT was studied whether or not the information acquired through Google Trends correlates with real life events. The objective was to find out to what extent the results provided by Google Trends are reliable in future predicting. In order to complete the study, it was essential to find subjects with enough search query volume and also search queries per se would have to be simple and clear enough to provide the exact data needed to complete the study as planned. The results of the study showed that geographical and linguistic factors and the right choice of the subject play a very big role in the research process. For example, if we were to make a research on finnish clothing brands, it wouldn’t be possible due to the subject’s marginality thus reducing the possibility to get exact data with enough search query volume on the subject. While researching tourism in Finland the report investigates the real number of tourists In Finland compared to internet searches on Finland. While researching car sales the report examines how predicting specific brands work in a small limited geological area. In the presidential election part the main focus was in finding out how the two candidates compare in the internet queries. There is severe competition about market share within the mobile operating systems. This study tries to investigate how this competition is going to advance...

Investigation and allocation on differences in margins The objective of the thesis was to find out reasons for the differences in margins concerning cash registry system and accounting sales and to allocate costs to stores. The target company was Tiimari Retail Ltd which has 176 stores around Finland. There were many extraordinary items and the thesis was focused on the two of the largest ones which were the domestic freights and the differences in inventory. The aim was to allocate the margin differences to stores as accurately as it is possible and to get the margins meet each other. The theory of the thesis is based on cost accounting and its terminology. The activity-based costing was chosen as the allocation method, because it follows the matching principle more closely than the traditional cost accounting and it provides more information about the operations of the company and the use of the recourses. For the activity-based costing the operations of the company were described which were the results of the extraordinary items. For the allocation operation the function drivers were defined. The calculation examples were made with the example numbers. It was important to observe the errors made by the system and how they affected the calculations. After the investigation the function drivers were defined and calculated with which the margin differences were allocated. The allocation of the costs with the activity-based costing succeeded well and followed the matching principle closely, which were one of the main targets. For the calculation the formulas were defined and their use was explained with the example calculations....
