The job satisfaction of payroll clerks at company X The purpose of this research is to determine whether the payroll clerks are satisfied with their jobs in company X. A secondary objective was to develop solutions in collaboration with all payroll clerks to one of the problems which was revealed in the interviews. The research was conducted for company X, which is an international group. Job satisfaction in company X is inspected annually through an employee survey, but a detailed examination of satisfaction among payroll clerks in particular has not been undertaken before. The research was conducted as a case study, but it also utilized the methods of action research, because one of the methods is storyboarding. Through the use of storyboarding the payroll clerks tried to find solutions to prevailing problems in the workplace. The main method of the research was the theme interview conducted in a group. The theoretical sections of the thesis examine job satisfaction and its development in Finland, motivation and Herzberg’s two-factor theory. Using Herzberg’s two-factor theory four research topics were created, which were also the research questions of the thesis. The four topics are opportunities to affect decisions and receive training in the workplace; encouragement; the work of the superior; and the work environment and atmosphere. The theme interview in a group was implemented in two groups. Based on the interviews it can be said that the payroll clerks are quite satisfied with their job, but also quite dissatisfied with factors of dissatisfaction. The work itself is varied and all days are different. They have enough responsibilities and opportunities to develop themselves. However, they do not have the feeling of succeeding or receive enough recognition in their job. They were most dissatisfied with the work environment because of its noisiness and bad ergonomics. Job satisfaction could be improved if their opinions would be taken to consideration when making division of the wage-earners between payroll clerks. Also by providing more recognition and feedback, it would affect job satisfaction in a positive manner and lead to feelings of success. The superior could choose an employee of the year from his own employees to encourage them continue doing great work also in the future....

KUUMA-municipalities’ financial analyses from a consolidation of municipalities point of view In this thesis I researched the KUUMA-municipalities financial situation by doing financial analysis. The goal in this thesis was to research the financial situation of KUUMA-municipalities by doing financial analysis. Other goals in this thesis were to figure out how the financial situation of these towns has developed from the year 2009 to year 2011. I also compared the financial situation of these towns with each other and to a town that is in a financial crisis. The last goal in this study was to figure out the financial conditions of possible municipal mergers that KUUMA-municipalities will be a part of. This study was made by exploiting KUUMA-municipalities’ financial statements and the interviews made to some of the chief financial officers of KUUMA-municipalities. As a research method I used mainly qualitative methods but I also added features of quantitative methods. It is at all times important to analyze the financial condition of towns, because of its wide influence. This study was especially current because of the municipal mergers that KUUMA-municipalities will very likely be a part of in the near future. This study aimed to give the general managements, the financial managements and the citizens of KUUMA-municipalities information on their hometowns financial situation and information to compare their hometowns financial situation to other towns nearby. As results of the study it can be stated that the financial situation in KUUMA-municipalities was good between years 2009 and 2011, according to the calculated key figures. The financial situation in KUUMA-municipalities has mainly developed during the three years period. Comparing the calculated key figures to a town in financial crisis it can be stated that KUUMA-municipalities’ finances are in good condition. From a financial point of view, municipal mergers are not the best way to operate at the moment for KUUMA-municipalities or at least it includes many challenges. But to avoid forced municipal mergers, the municipal managers of KUUMA-municipalities have proposed researches about municipal mergers that, if realized, will allow KUUMA-municipalities to retain their good financial situation in the future....

Innovative leadership and innovations The purpose of the thesis was to find out how the well-being and innovativeness of employees could be improved at work by innovative leadership. The purpose was to study how the innovative leader should operate so that the well-being and innovativeness of employees increases. Since it was impossible to establish which of these two concepts is the cause and which is the effect, the connection between them was difficult to indicate. For this reason the well-being at work was studied only briefly in this thesis. The study concentrated on factors in the innovative leadership which could improve the innovativeness of employees. The theoretical framework was based on creativity and innovativeness, innovations, innovative leadership and well-being at work. The research method was qualitative research. The research was conducted with interviews. Six persons, who represented four different companies, were chosen as interviewees. All interviewees had completed a master’s degree in a university. Two of the interviewees worked as managers and four as specialists. Three interviewees worked directly with development work and innovations, whereas three interviewees were not directly involved with innovation and development work in their companies. The questions were formulated into claims and the claims were divided into three categories, well-being at work, innovativeness and innovative leadership. The results showed that leadership has an important role in improving the innovativeness in a company. The research showed four factors to which the innovative leader should pay attention in order to improve the creativity and innovativeness of an organization. The important factors are the leadership method, resources, encouraging atmosphere and the employees and their abilities. In conclusion it can be said that an innovative leader is a person who is able to observe others and consider new possibilities. He also questions the accustomed ways of working. The innovative leader is open to new ideas and he encourages employees to experiment with new ideas. The innovative leader reserves necessary temporal and financial resources for develop-ment work. He is also able to create an encouraging and open atmosphere where every employee is willing to bring out his own abilities and develop his potential and the company. Suggested topics for further research include studying the connection between innovative leadership and employees’ well-being at work. The second topic is to find out how the employees on different organization levels regard innovativeness and new ideas. Also the negative and undesirable consequences of innovation could create an interesting topic for further research....

Benefits and Threats of Outsourcing in Food Production Industry This Bachelor’s thesis examines the value creation in relations between business partners and what is their focus in outsourcing activities. The primary goal was to examine the benefits and threats of outsourcing in the food production industry. The data is based on the applicable food production processes and their effects. The thesis’ material was collected by studying literature, research reports, industry analysis, trends and strategies of the most successful companies as well as customer benefits. The result was a strong view of the importance of business growth, growth factors, networking between graduates, the creation of opportunities, trusted partners, creating security and the role of small businesses. Inorganic growth opportunities can be seen as the core issue on creating a profitable business rapidly. Government action increases logistics costs in Finland more than competing countries. Another problem for the food industry is government’s tightening regulations. This makes it difficult, especially for small business’s licensing process, as well as the growing need for capital investments, which are industry-specific. Donors are exposed to high risk. The beginning of the food production chain consists of family farms and small production units. A significant proportion of these are dependent on older entrepreneurs and younger generation has not always the opportunity or desire to continue production. This leads to a decreasing amount of production units and increases farm sizes. Trading development has happened under big companies’ terms, as they compete for bigger market shares. At least in part, this has laid the foundation for strong growth of online marketing, which has been slower in the food industry and food trade. Growth of on-line sales is faster than other product groups. Customer behavior change in favor of the online store is already threatening traditional small retailers, and also leads to large operators closing their less efficient units. Outsourcing was found worthwhile. Companies prefer outsourcing their businesses to larger companies, whom offer partnership-based services covering all the needs of the buyer. Smaller operators provide most local services, which are often subject to intense competition....

Blogi sisältömarkkinoinnin työkaluna : Case: Laurea

Tämän opinnäytetyön toimeksiantajana oli Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu. Työn aiheena oli blogi sisältömarkkinoinnin työkaluna. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli analysoida Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun blogitarjonnan nykytila sekä havainnoida ja selvittää kokonaiskuvaa siitä, kuinka suomalaisissa ammattikorkeakouluissa blogeja ja sisältömarkkinointia käytetään.
Opinnäytetyön pohjana toimi tietoperusta Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun toiminnasta ja erityisesti markkinoinnista, joka hankittiin haastattelemalla Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun Leppävaaran yksikön markkinoinnin suunnittelijaa Outi Kinnusta ja tutustumalla Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun verkkosivuilta löytyvään tietoon.
Teoreettisen viitekehyksen tietoperusta käsittelee markkinoinnin nykytilaa sen toimintaympäristössä tapahtuneiden muutosten ja uusien kilpailukeinojen kautta. Tämän lisäksi teoriaosuus käy läpi digitaalista markkinointia, sosiaalista mediaa ja erityisesti blogeja. Blogeja käsitellään teoriaosuudessa ensin käsitteen ja historian tasolla, josta näkökulma siirtyy blogien hyötyihin yrityskäytössä sekä erilaisiin yritysblogityyppeihin ja yritysblogien kehitysvaiheisiin.
Tämän opinnäytetyön empiriaosuus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena ja se koostui kolmesta eri tutkimusvaiheesta. Ensimmäisessä tutkimusvaiheessa analysoitiin Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun blogien käytön nykytilaa. Toisessa tutkimusvaiheessa tutkittiin yleisellä tasolla suomalaisten ammattikorkeakoulujen blogien käyttöä. Tarkoituksena oli hahmottaa kokonaiskuvaa siitä, miten suomalaiset ammattikorkeakoulut tänä päivänä käyttävät blogeja. Tutkimuksen viimeisessä osassa syvennyttiin kolmeen yksittäiseen blogiin sisällönanalyysin avulla ja selvitettiin näiden tärkeimpiä viestinnällisiä tavoitteita ja niiden toteuttamisessa hyödynnettyjä viestinnällisiä keinoja.
Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että suomalaiset ammattikorkeakoulut hyödyntävät melko aktiivisesti blogeja markkinoinnissaan, vaikka blogien taso vaihtelikin suuresti. Suomalaisten ammattikorkeakoulujen blogien käytössä on myös selkeitä yhtäläisyyksiä, joiden perusteella blogit oli mahdollista jakaa kahdeksan eri blogityyppiin. Tärkeimmäksi viestinnälliseksi tavoitteeksi suomalaisten ammattikorkeakoulujen blogeille osoittautui informointi.
Tutkimuksen tuloksista rakennettiin Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulun käyttöön blogien hyödyntämisen kehityssuunnitelma. Suunnitelmassa keskityttiin nykyiseen blogitarjontaan kohdistuvien yleisen tason kehitysehdotusten sijasta luomaan Laurea-ammattikorkeakoululle täysin uusi blogikonsepti, jonka tarkoituksena on parantaa Laurean potentiaalisten uusien opiskelijoiden tietoisuutta siitä, mitä opiskelu Laureassa käytännössä on ja millainen Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu on opiskelupaikkana....

A russian customer service employees everyday management The thesis topic was about Russian customer service employee’s everyday management. The topic was defined together with the cooperating partner Rushouse Oy. Rushouse Oy is a Russian speaking, renting and recruiting company. Rushouse Oy wanted to get information about everyday management among Russian speaking employees and if they are taking the multicultural aspect in to account. For the research method the qualitative interview was used in which help was used to find out how Russian (rent) employees are oriented towards work and how they can educate themselves in work and improve companies profit. Also the interview was supposed to tell what kind of extra value and challenges does multiculturalism bring to a working society. According to the results Russian employees are managed every day, are well oriented towards work and they use resources and time a bit more than normal. Everybody answered that they take the multicultural background into consideration and that is why they used more time and effort in communication and discussions. Most of them answered that they had feedback discussions regularly and when needed. Feedback is usually given face to face. In education they all react positively and are encouraged to do it. All development ideas were discussed with their bosses. Good and bad experiences they didn’t mention, except with the quality of the work and taking responsibility. These problems were taken care of by talking and more effective supervision of the work. In conclusion they can tell that everyday management is used with Russian speaking employees and they are given time. There are differences but it is being handled with conversations. Companies are ready to put the same effort with them as with any other employees. It is important that Russians travel to Finland more and more and that is why Finland needs more knowledgeable Russian speaking employees. There are employees who speak Russian, but they all don’t have the cultural know how. Good cultural and local business skills are mostly with those who have worked a long time and have had a long cooperation period. An interpreter is not always the best solution. Development issues are based on the result from the interviews mostly with work quality and its efficiency. Also taking responsibility is a bit unfamiliar concept for a Russian speaking employee if they are not in a manager’s position.
