Storage plan for a converter station in EstLink2-project. Case: Siemens Osakeyhtiö This Bachelor’s thesis is an assignment related to practical training. The assignment was to plan a warehouse for converter station in EstLink2 electricity transmission link project. The significant electricity transmission link is going to be built between Finland and Estonia. The budget of the project is 320 million euros. Siemens Ltd is going to build two converter stations for this project. The theoretical part of this thesis is based on two different theoretical approaches: general warehouse theory and an ABC analysis for product placement. The theory of warehouses was collected from many different sources and the main focus was on theory for warehouses used in projects. The ABC analysis was used in doing the placement of the different products. Layout pictures and information about placing the products was also received from Siemens Ltd. The empirical part was made by using two different qualitative research methods: systematic observation and theme interviews. The systematic observation was carried out by visiting two ongoing substation sites. That gave concrete information about planning the warehouse and about its implementation. The theme interview questions were designed to increase understanding about problems in warehousing and the experiences of interviewees. The interviewees were three department directors, two company employees and one expert on this field of business. Interviewees were chosen based on their knowledge from different perspectives. The research methods gave useful information that could not be found from literature. The final plan of the warehouse was made by combining theory and qualitative research. This plan includes detailed placing of the products in the warehouse. The building of the converter station is going to start in May 2012 so the topic of this thesis is very acute. The thesis gives useful suggestions for the company about how to organize the warehouse in this big project....

Development of the Quality of Customer Service Case X Company’s Home Department Staff as a Developer of Customer Service The subject of this Bachelor’s is the development of customer service in the home department of business X, and the identification of issues that prevent good quality customer service in this department. The purpose of this research was to collect and analyse information acquired through customer service, so that improvements can be made in this area. The theoretical framework consists of a customer-oriented approach to customer service, and theories on service quality. In the light of this research it was important to define what is meant by customer service, and what the elements of customer-oriented service are. The research method is qualitative and the elected research subject is the sales personnel in business X’s home department. They work in customer service every day, and thus gain plenty of customer information. We wanted to study especially those individuals who possess a lot of information relevant to this study. The research was conducted through a questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed in the home department’s employees’ rest area, and they could be returned anonymously to a box. The answers where collected over a period of two weeks, so that all those wishing to participate had a chance to fill in the questionnaire. The results of this research show that the department has plenty of room for development and change. The major challenge was thought to be the insufficient number of customer service staff. The small number of cashiers was problematic. Many suggestions for improvement were obtained through this study, and these deserve attention in the future and thus active customer service is minimal in this department. Training should be arranged on a regular basis and attended by all customer service staff members of this department so that they could more easily provide good customer service....

Developing access control systems and practices in the Laurea University of Applied Sciences The objective of this thesis is to map the present state of play as regards the access control of different local units of Laurea University of applied sciences and to present models for its further development. The thesis addresses the possibilities provided by technical access control systems to improve the security of the university premises. The approach to using an electronic access control system is based on the need to limit the access and movements of outside visitors on the premises of the university. The purpose is to ensure the security of the staff, students and visitors of the local units of the university and to protect the property. The content of the thesis focuses on the presentation of the local units of Laurea university of applied sciences, the introduction to the operating principles and practices of the electronic access control system, the legislation covering access control systems and the evaluation of the present state of play as regards security of the local units and suggestions for its further development. The access control system-relevant guidelines drafted by the central government steering committee on data security (VAHTI), set up by the Ministry of Finances, have been taken into account in this thesis. These guidelines address data security recommendations and rules to be applied within central government administrations. The access control system is one of the electronic security systems that can be installed to protect the property and people. Nevertheless this system alone cannot guarantee the overall security of the property. Comprehensive benefits can be obtained by connecting the access control system to other security systems such as burglar alarm and video surveillance devices. It is also possible to integrate the work time monitoring system to the access control system. In this thesis, I set out briefly these different options and the benefits they can offer. Even if different electronic security systems, linked to structural anti-burglary measures, make it easier to protect premises, they do not replace the contribution the users of premises can bring to creating a culture of security. Even a good security system does not serve its purpose if it is not used in an appropriate way. Therefore, one can not underestimate the importance of an adequate training of the users to familiarize them with the functioning of the security system. The views of the end-users of the technical access control system, in the present case the staff and students of Laurea University of applied sciences were collected through a survey to which replied 158 staff members and 633 students. The views of the end-users are analyzed in this thesis based on the feed-back received through the survey....

The theoretical section of the thesis examines the concept of profitability and introduces several calculations of profitability, including the income statement, cash flow statement, profit margin statement and financial statement. The theoretical section discusses the field of retailing during 2009-2011and the pop-up phenomenon. The objective of the empirical section was to compile the profitability calculations and to analyze them. As a result of this study, the pop-up shop was judged not to be profitable. The calculations express that costs were manageable, but the turnover remained below expectations and the revenue was negative. Company X was given advice on methods of increasing the revenue to a positive figure. The effects of work time allocation on the evaluation of a project’s profitability: a case- study of Consultancy Company Ltd This thesis focuses on a project profitability evaluation of a consultancy company, which operates in development cooperation field. The consultancy’s operations are based on providing support to donor-funded development projects through expertise services. In summer 2012 the company will introduce a new enterprise resource planning system which changes the work time tracking by allocating the work time to the projects and other assignments in addition to work time tracking for payroll computation. The new work time tracking enables more accurate project-based cost accounting. Cost ac-counting offers information for budgeting and the budget’s sales margin provides the base for the project’s profitability evaluation. Thus in the future it is possible to take employees’ salary expenses into consideration when calculating the sales margin. The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the processing of the employees’ salary expenses as direct costs related to the project, instead of processing them as indirect costs, affects the projects profitability. The research problem and the objective of this thesis is to examine on behalf of the consultancy how the change in work time allocation affects the project’s profitability evaluation. The effects are studied particularly from the perspective of the previous assumptions held by the consultancy towards this subject. The studied materials consist of information from the employees’ timesheets and the projects’ budgets. The study was conducted by analyzing the above-mentioned information and by interviewing the consultancy’s financial manager. The most important conclusion of the study is that the employees’ salary expenses have a remarkable effect on the project’s profitability, contrary to the assumptions of the consultancy. Allocating the work time to the projects changes the project’s profitability evaluation and creates a more realistic base for it. Considering the salary expenses in the budget is essential for evaluating the project’s profitability, and monitoring the profitability development requires regular budget follow-up. Profitability can not only be evaluated by numerical indicators, but the qualitative benefits that the project offers to the company have to be taken into consideration when evaluating the overall profitability of the project....

Internet Marketing for B2B E-Commerce, Case: More On Ltd The aim of the thesis is to clarify what kind of e-commerce More On Ltd. should plan for itself in order to give a good impression of their company on the online market. The thesis was made with qualitative research methods and is defined to deal with online e-commerce especially from the perspective of the sponsoring company More On Ltd. In the theoretical section of the thesis, e-commerce and the internet marketing strategies of e-commerce are explained generally. More On Ltd’s current websites were described as a starting point of their e-commerce development. In the future, e-commerce has a lot of possibilities for example for globalizing and taking advantage of the mobile market, though then one has to take into consideration the risk factors. More On Ltd., the company offering business gifts, has a plan of making their own online store. For the purpose of planning e-commerce internet marketing, a set of suggestions was made based on the theory of this thesis, the results from expertise interviews, and the wishes of More On company's CEO. The future online store will be executed on a ready-made e-commerce platform and it will be mainly targeted to B2B-clients. For the purpose of creating new ideas for More On Ltd’s online store, the representatives of two companies, who knew about B2B-based e-commerce internet marketing, were interviewed. The research results revealed that online internet marketing has surprisingly many factors that need to be taken into consideration. Especially B2B online trading is a relatively new business model and its marketing has to be revised constantly when new marketing options keep coming up. B2B-marketing is somewhat different than B2C-marketing, which also needs to be taken in to consideration in order to preserve the competitive edge. More On Ltd. needs to consider the resource requirements of e-commerce and its effects on the operations of the company....

Uudistuva johtajuus ja Z-sukupolvi työelämässä
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2012)
Modernized leadership and Z-generation at work In this thesis I have studied a new way of leadership which is called “non-leadership”. It has been created by Janne Tienari and Rebecca Piekkari in their new book called “Z ja epäjohtaminen”. “Non-leadership” is not official concept and it may never become that. It will also be strongly associated with Z-generation’s employment in Finland. Leadership is an important subject and there will always be new sides in it, the functionality of which can be tested in real life. The so called non-leadership is still an unofficial leadership model, which is a way to form leadership for the future. In the theory-part of my thesis I learned more about non-leadership model and also to Z-generation which is closely related to theory about non-leadership. I explore also a few other leadership models that seem to be basis for non-leadership. The study part of my thesis is carried out in co-operation with Company X, which is a Finnish Industrial Company. I compare their current leadership to the non-leadership model through written leadership guidelines and answers to young Company X’s employees. In the interviews I aim to explore what kind of leadership they value and what kind it is now. The study was executed as a qualitative research in the form of theme interview. I saw this as the best option because the purpose was to survey what Company X’s leadership is at the moment and find what parts need developing....
