Facebook as a Help in Marketing and Building a Brand in Small and Medium Sized Businesses - Case: Järvenpään Wiener Paakari Oy This thesis deals with the social media and brand development. The case-company that was involved in this study is Järvenpään Wiener Paakari Oy, which is nearly 30 years old, a very traditional bakery in Järvenpää. In this company, values, vision and mission were not defined neither their brand has not been studied and examined. Business has mostly been directed in a way that just seems to work. As a target of this thesis, it was to examine their customers’ impressions and visions about the company with a help of survey. Based on those 75 answers gathered and the writer’s own visions, the brand identity was defined. It has also been thought how the brand can be developed in the future to match them with company’s own target visions. This thesis contains two different theory sections. The first part deals with the brand, how it is designed and also its benefits both for the customer and for the company. In this thesis Thomas Gad’s 4D-brandmodel is presented of which advice had been applied to the use of the case-company. The role of image and reputation compared to the brand are also considered. The second part deals with the use of social media as a marketing device, especially with small and medium sized businesses and the help for them were pondered. The emphasis was mainly on social media service Facebook which is the most popular service in the world. Facebook pages were also created for the case company. The target of the pages were to in-crease the company’s visibility and take the company to there where its customers have gone also. 94 fans were reached to the pages during the process of this thesis. In order to develop the Facebook pages, a plan was created which also shows the company’s new brand goals. In the future, Facebook marketing should be based on those brand qualities in order to strengthen and develop the brand....

Reorganizing Cash-and-Carry Yard for Builders, Case: Starkki Lahti This thesis discusses the reorganization of a Starkki builders’ cash-and-carry yard. The goal of the thesis is to find solutions on how to make the yard more functional for both customers and employees. The purpose is to survey the current problem areas and the reasons why they exist, and to find propositions for solutions. The thesis was carried out using the qualitative research methods. As a means of data acquisition, a theme interview with the logistics manager was carried out. The purpose of the interview was to find out the manager’s insights on the problems at the builders’ yard, and on how the situation could be improved. In addition, relevant literature and the Internet were used as information sources. To support the theoretical background, also participative observation was carried out. The observation was mainly active and it was performed alongside with the researcher’s own work at Starkki. Photographs and figures of the yard and its arrangements were also used in order to ease the perception. As a result of the thesis, a proposal of a new layout for the cash-and-carry yard was created. The most essential issue is to increase the storage space so that the products can be placed in optimal storage positions in future. ABC and XYZ analyses will be used to determine the storage places. With the proposed procedures, storage damages and loss can be significantly reduced. In addition, the storing and stock control can be made more efficient. The level of customer service can be raised as the working conditions improve....

Development of Cost Control in a Logistics Service Process This thesis was made as a part of the SULOIN project. Laurea University of Applied Sciences is taking part in the SULOIN project, the purpose of which is to improve knowledge structures, competitiveness and ecology of Southern Finland’s logistics cluster. Company X, who is the principal of this thesis, is one of the companies participating in the SULOIN project. This thesis is based on the problems that the chief executive officer of Company X pointed out. The primary purpose of this thesis was to produce the information that Company X needed. This thesis is focused on developing cost controlling, and the process models were made to support it. The theoretical framework of the thesis is composed of the process modelling and cost accounting. Therefore the thesis was made in two parts. The first part of the research was modelling the processes of Company X. The second part was cost accounting. In the theory section of the thesis the essential information is provided about both the aforementioned areas. In the realisation of the cost control an attempt was made to join these two parts to support each other. A theme interview and an observation were used as research methods while making the process modelling. The primary purpose of process modelling was to function as a basis for the development of cost controlling. The main processes and support processes of the company were studied through the process modelling. From the main processes, especially the production of services was studied carefully. More exact modelling was made from the service process in the studied terminal. The development proposals for cost controlling are based on the balance ledger given by the Company X, which was sorted and analyzed. In the thesis, the already existing processes were questioned and proposals for new definitions were made to be used instead. The development of cost controlling remained on a much theoretical level. Concrete actions were not possible in the development of cost controlling because of the present state of bookkeeping and cost accounting in Company X. Because of this, this thesis concentrates on the development proposals which would make the cost controlling possible in the future....

Motivation of personnel for new working method as challenge to leadership The subject of this thesis is the motivation of personnel for a new working method. The case organization is Finnair Shared Services which if part of Finnair Group. In Finnair Shared Services, new software called Tuntinetti was implemented for the purpose of follow-up of working hours to support internal invoicing in Finnair Group. However the good idea has not succeeded as expected and the project partly failed. The implementation of new software requires that people change their working methods. Personnel can be motivated by using methods of management of change. The theory section discusses how individuals react to change, what the phases of change are and how management of change can lead to successful implementation. The theory brought out particularly the importance of confidential atmosphere and interactive communication in work community throughout the change process. The purposes of the thesis were to find out the factors that influenced the failure in implementation of Tuntinetti software and to find solutions how to increase and accelerate the usage of it. The empiric research was executed as quantitative inquiry to the entire personnel of Finnair Shared Services in December 2011. The research results indicate that if the purpose of new working method is not completely assimilated in the work community the change fails to come true. From Tuntinetti’s point of view it is important to understand the purpose of internal invoicing. This is clearly missing. The research results verify that personnel feel that several changes had been done in their work community already before the Tuntinetti project. We also noticed that the changes in the organization at the same time of Tuntinetti project had negative influence on the implementation. It can be said that it is extremely important to choose the right time for change. Because time is money the follow-up and control of it are part of cost control. We observed that when used efficiently Tuntinetti can be a good tool to support internal invoicing. Additionally it could be used more widely to lead processes....

Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisin ja euroalueen velkakriisin yhtymäkohdat

Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on selvittää Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisin ja euroalueen velkakriisin välisiä yhtymäkohtia. Tutkielmassa selvitetään ne tekijät, jotka vaikuttivat Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisin syntyyn ja verrataan niitä euroalueen velkakriisin synnyttäneiden tekijöiden kanssa. Lisäksi opinnäytetyössä tarkastellaan Kiinan vaikutusta kriisien taustalla, sekä sitä, millaisia vaikutuksia kriiseillä on ollut Kiinaan.
Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena kirjallisuuskatsauksena, jota varten perehdyttiin laajasti alan kirjallisuuteen sekä aihetta käsitteleviin sähköisiin julkaisuihin. Oleellisena lähdemateriaalina käytettiin myös elokuvaa.
Työn teorialuvut pohjustavat kirjoituspöytätutkimuksena toteutettua empiiristä osuutta. Ensimmäisessä teorialuvussa tarkastellaan rahoitusjärjestelmiä sekä markkinoiden toimintaa. Lisäksi luvussa esitellään historiallisia kriisejä. Opinnäytetyössä esitellään myös Nobelpalkitun
Paul Krugmanin teoriaa finanssikriisin noidankehästä. Empiiriset osiot käsittelevät Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisiä, euroalueen velkakriisiä, Kiinan positiota kriiseissä sekä kriisien yhteneväisyyksiä ja eroavaisuuksia.
Tutkimuksen tuloksena voidaan todeta, että Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisin ja euroalueen velkakriisin välillä oli yhtymäkohtia. Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisin voidaan opinnäytetyön tutkimuksen valossa pitää euroalueen kriisin käynnistäneenä tekijänä. Tulokset osoittavat myös, että Kiinalla oli merkittävä rooli Yhdysvaltain finanssikriisin taustalla. Vastaavanlaista merkittävää roolia euroalueen velkakriisiin ei kuitenkaan tutkimuksessa havaittu.

The purpose of this thesis was to assess how the member services of The Finnish Association of Landlords should be developed. The member services represent an essential part of the overall value produced for the members of the association. It is important to develop these services, as high-quality services have a direct effect on the number of members and mem-ber satisfaction. The objectives of this thesis were to survey which services are used the most and how the services have been experienced. The survey was conducted from the point of view of the members. In the theoretical section, essential concepts related to association activity are presented. In addition to defining the term association and discussing the special characteristics of associations this section describes the most important member services offered by associations and shows how the services affect member satisfaction. The sources that were used include information from the Internet and literature related to association activity. The empirical research was conducted as a quantitative survey, which attempted to establish how the members have experienced the services of the association. A question-naire was sent to all the members of the association in November 2011. There were 4702 persons in the membership register at the moment of transmission and 1083 members responded, giving a response rate of 23 %. On the basis of the results it can be inferred that the members were very satisfied with the services of the association. The services which are related to counseling and informing were considered to be the most important services. The majority of the interviewees did not ex-press hope for more member services; but rather preferred that attention be paid to the quality of the services. According to the results the most important targets for development were information channels such as the web pages of the association. The number of services was considered sufficient, but some members were not aware of all the services and benefits that are available to members. With improvements in notification and web pages, members would become more informed about how to utilize all the services for members. Once these improvements in the information channels are made, another survey would be needed to investigate how the changes have affected member satisfaction....
