Implementation of startup projects in a case company In this thesis I examine the profitability of the startup projects’ accuracy of estimates and I evaluate the effects on profitability of continuous service. The aim is to evaluate how original budgets and schedules of startup projects compare to actual budgets and schedules. Case company X is a global ict-service provider that specializes in outsourcing customers’ ict operations. The thesis is based on the company’s project reports, theory relating to the subject and interviews of two project managers. Choosing of the key metrics is based upon theory and the practices in the case company. Interviews of the project managers were carried out as one hour theme interview in which the project managers explained their views and experiences of startup projects. The selected 23 projects were startup projects that ended in between 2007 - 2010. These include only new startups while expansions of existing services were not included. Based on the material it was observed that startup projects deviate often from the original project budgets and schedules. Observed deviations are caused by a number of different fac-tors. Matrix organisation and different objectives create friction between different groups involved in the projects. Based upon the interviews, the project process are not always implemented according to the company’s description. According to interview of project man-ager and the development manager, failures of startup projects can cause increase in costs, loss of profits and reduce customer satisfaction....

Finanssikriisi
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2011)
Finanssikriisillä tarkoitetaan rahoitusmarkkinoiden kriisiä, joka sai alkunsa Yhdysvalloista vuonna 2007. Yhdysvalloissa asuntomarkkinat ylikuumenivat. Yhdysvaltain keskuspankki FED piti ohjauskorkonsa alhaisella tasolla melko pitkän ajan ja tämä...
The financial crisis refers to the crisis of the financial market that began in the United States in 2007. The housing market had become overheated in the United States because the Federal Reserve had kept interest rate low for a long period of time, encouraging people to buy property. As the demand grew house prices became inflated each year. It was believed that prices would keep on growing in the future. Financial institutions loaned money to people who were unable to pay back the loans. Following the demand financial institutions lent money to almost anyone and this led to the subprime mortgage market. When borrowers began to go into defaults, the loans could always be refinanced. The rise in the collateral value of the houses kept this possible. Financial institutions sold these subprime mortgages on to so-called shadow banks. At the same time the financial institutions transferred the credit risk away from their balance sheets. These shadow banks operated outside the regulation of financial institutions and so they were able to leverage and take bigger risks. Shadow banks packed these mortgages into complex securities and sold them onward to the market. Subprime mortgages were securitized and transformed into difficult derivatives. Nobody knew what they were holding at the end. The credit rating agencies gave these derivatives the best rating and this ensured demand among investors. As the interest rate began to rise and the supply began to shrink the housing market began to contract. At the same time many people got into financial difficulties with their mortgage repayments. Due to the decrease in house prices these debts could no longer be refinanced. This weakened the base for subprime mortgages and the derivatives based on them. These mortgages and derivatives were quickly expanded into a huge market. Financial institutions experienced an increase in credit losses from subprime mortgages. At the same time derivatives based on these mortgages began to default. This quickly led to loss of trust and liquidity from the market, resulting in the financial crisis. The purpose and aim of this thesis was to study the causes of the financial crisis, especially in the United States. The thesis carried out as a qualitative literature review. As the research problem shows the financial crisis was compared to its predecessors. In particular the research concentrated on the 1930 great depression in the United States and the banking crisis of 1990 in Finland. With the globalization of the financial market the crisis spread widely across the globe. Based on the research it can be said that the financial crisis has a direct causal relation to its predecessors and to the European crisis....

Performance appraisal discussion model for E. Laiho Oy The purpose of this thesis was to create a performance appraisal discussion model for E. Laiho Oy. The goal of this thesis was to create a model for managers dialog with employees and develop entrepreneurship with the ideas coming from personnel. Employer wants to create a regular practice, which helps to form reliable dialogue connection between manager and employee. Theoretical context is based on the books about performance appraisal discussion and man-agement functions written by Valpola, Aarnikoivu, Hyppänen and Ronthy-Östberg and Rosendahl. Based on the theoretical context and interviews of employee questions for performance appraisal discussions were written up and a model how to implement discussions in practice was developed. The model of performance appraisal discussion consists of guidelines on how to inform, prepare and take care of the discussions in practice. The model also contains guidelines for managers how to put into practice both individual and team performance appraisal discussions. For individual discussions, question forms were constructed which handle targets, progress of career, work community and its atmosphere. Frameworks for discussion were constructed for team performance appraisals. The model of performance appraisal discussion includes also a summary form to document the main points of discussion. The forms and guidelines of the performance appraisal discussion model were given to the employer for assessment. After that suggested changes by employees were added; Question forms in the two questions were changed. In the guidelines of individual and team performance appraisal discussion for managers, the word subordinate was changed to the word employee. As a further step it was suggested that the performance appraisal discussion will be exploited as a tool to redistribute tasks. There are several employees in the company who will retire in the near future so it is good to have a tool which helps to find out staffs willingness to take more responsibility or to change their responsibilities....

Luontaistuotekaupan markkinoinnin kehittäminen
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2011)
Markkinointitutkimus rakennettiin markkinoinnin kilpailukeinojen 4P-mallin pohjalta. Tutki¬muksen avulla pystyttiin erottelemaan yritykselle tärkeimmät markkinoinnin keinot, jolloin oli mahdollista myös suunnitella toteutettavat markkinointitoimenpiteet tehokkaiksi niiden perusteella. Työstä huomattiin muun muassa kuinka tärkeää internet on potentiaalisille asiakkaille, sekä kuinka vähän alennukset vaikuttavat luontaistuotekaupan valinnassa. Työstä todettiin olevan todellista hyötyä toimeksiantajan liiketoiminnan kehitykselle.
Markkinoinnin teoriasta kerättiin tietoa kirjallisuudesta, sekä muutamista laadukkaista internet-lähteistä. Työn teoreettiseen viitekehykseen on poimittu yrityksen kannalta tärkeimpiä markkinoinnin teorioita. Markkinoinnin kilpailukeinojen oikeasta lukumäärästä on monenlaisia käsityksiä ja tässä työssä käsiteltiin Philip Kotlerin kehittämää markkinoinnin kilpailukeinojen 4P-mallia. Mallissa käsitellään markkinoinnin neljää kilpailukeinoa, tuotetta, hintaa, saatavuutta sekä markkinointiviestintää. Työssä myös analysoidaan yrityksen nykytilannetta SWOT-analyysin pohjalta, sillä yrityksen nykytilan tunteminen on tärkeää suunniteltaessa yrityksen tulevia markkinoinnin toimenpiteitä....

The information of this thesis was collected from a report which includes information about all of the logistics training courses in vocational schools and universities in Finland. The information was also collected from TUVA maps which were developed for the ESLogC project. TUVA maps describe the competences which will be needed in the future in the field of logistics. The information in TUVA maps was gathered by interviewing for example teachers of logistics and specialists in the logistics field. The theoretical frame of reference in this thesis consisted of the theoretical section of com-petences and training. The literature survey consisted mainly of the competences requirements in business life in the future and the challenges in developing the training. The outcome of this thesis was that the present logistics training responds to the know-how requirements of the future. Nevertheless, there remains some development to be done....

The Finnish Legal System as Explained for Schoolchildren : case: The District Court of Helsinki presentation video The purpose of our thesis is to carry out smoothly visits of school groups to the District Court of Helsinki. This is why we planned and created a presentation video about the District Court of Helsinki in co-operation with Helsinki City College of Technology. Every week, several school groups visit the District Court of Helsinki. During these visits, the groups listen to a brief presentation of the Finnish legal system and court functions. In addition, they get a short explanation of how a court case proceeds. In the District Court of Helsinki, making a video presentation, which could be of use when arranging the visits, has been under discussion. The basis of our thesis is this presentation video, and by making the video, we are going to help the Secretary of the District Court, in her work. The purpose of the video is that the pupils will watch it at school before they come to visit the District Court. Our thesis has two parts: a documentary video and a written part, and these parts are connected to each other. We have planned the content of the video together with the District Court of Helsinki and a filming crew from the Helsinki City College of Technology. In the video, we show imaginary court cases, introduce the persons present in the court, tell general information about the District Court of Helsinki and give advice on what to take into account when visiting the courthouse. We chose to give information about basic legal matters that everyone can encounter in their lives, such as divorce and undisputed civil cases. In the video, legal theory is demonstrated by examples that are of interest to young people....

SEPA jäsenvaltioiden sisäisessä maksuliikenteessä
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2011)
Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on tutkia yhtenäistä euromaksualuetta (Single Euro Payments Area, SEPA) ja paneutua tarkemmin sen kolmeen jäsenvaltioon: Saksaan, Ranskaan ja Slovakiaan. Opinnäytetyö on laadittu Metsäliitto-konsernin rahoitusyhtiön...
SEPA in payments traffic inside the member states The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and it has been conducted at the request of Metsä Group Financial Services Oy. This study focuses on an examination of three SEPA countries, which are Germany, France and Slovakia. The results of the study should give valuable information to the client about the state of SEPA implementation in those three countries. The purpose of SEPA is to unify the payment practices throughout Europe. At the moment SEPA recognizes three different non-cash payment services, which are the Credit Transfer, the Direct Debit and the Payment Cards. Due to the nature of the Metsä Group Financial Services Oy’s operations the thesis will mostly focus on SEPA Credit Transfer. The subject of this thesis is relatively new and also highly topical. Due to the novelty of the topic there is not much updated literature written about it and that is why the importance of the Internet-based sources is considerable. In addition to the use of electronic sources, several interviews were conducted to get a broader aspect to the thesis. The interviewees were selected from within the Metsä Group Financial Services Oy and from Nordea Bank, and also from the Federation of Finnish Financial Services which coordinates the SEPA project in Finland. The transition to the SEPA has been underway for about three years but still most of the member states are in a very early stage of the implementation. In Finland the deadline for implementing SEPA Credit Transfers has been the end of 2010. Despite the deadline the banks are allowed to offer old standards for credit transfers as an additional service until the end of October 2011. In the rest of Europe the situation regarding SEPA implementation is not as clear as it is in Finland. Of the three countries that were investigated for this thesis, France was the only one which had set a clear deadline for SEPA credit transfers and that deadline is the end of 2011. In the largest economy in Europe, Germany, there has been no official end date for SEPA implementation. Germany has been very reluctant to introduce new standards. Despite the early state of the German SEPA implementation project the worst situation at the moment is in Slovakia. Slovakia has set a deadline for implementation for the second half of 2012, but currently it has one of the lowest amounts of SEPA payments in whole SEPA region. Regulation of the European Union, which takes effect in the summer of 2011, will set a binding deadline to February of 2013 for implementation of SEPA Credit Transfers. As a result of uniform payment standards and all binding regulations, corporations can centralize their payments traffic and thereby achieve the improvements. All payment traffic that happens between SEPA countries can be settled from any part of the area and therefore it is possible to create a Payment Factory. Due to the Payment Factory it is possible to reduce the number of bank accounts, which will give a better position in negotiations between corporations and banks....

Analysis of internal communications at Hertz The purpose of this thesis was to examine the internal communications of Hertz car rental’s internal communications from the point of view of employees of operations division. This purpose was divided into two research problems: How well internal communications work at Hertz and for what kind of developments is there a need in the opinion of the staff. The theoretical framework consists of theories of internal communications and communications culture. This framework has mainly been based on the views of Åberg and Juholin. Locations of First Rent A Car Finland Oy, a company which operates the Hertz brand in Finland, were the focus of this study. The research method used was quantitative survey which was executed as a questionnaire survey. The research material consists of the answers to this survey. 77 survey forms were sent and response percentage was 33.8. General opinion of the staff regarding internal communications, how much information was received regarding e.g. instructions and general flow, quantity and quality of information were some of the objects studied. Results were compiled from the returned survey forms. It can be deduced from the results that the staff of Hertz car rental’s operations division is mostly satisfied with internal communications. There is, however, room for improvement in the adequacy of information and in receiving feedback. Suggestions for development of internal communications were made as a result of this study. Based on the answers received the intranet system in use called Boxi was found to be the most important channel of receiving and finding information. Based on this the first suggestion was to make instructions in Boxi clearer and more up-to-date. The second suggestion was to emphasize the importance of internal communications to all employees. The third suggestion made was to monitor the status of internal communications regularly from now on....
