Ecological logistics in Finland 1990-2010 This thesis looks at the role of ecology in logistics. In the last few years ecological logistics has been a very interesting thing to explore. The purpose of this study was to find out how ecological logistics has been developing in the last twenty years in Finland. This thesis also looks at how much the European Union has affected ecological logistics in Finland. This thesis includes a theory section and an empirical section. The theory section discusses the effect of European union, the supply chain management and a few different instruments for measuring ecological phenomena. The empirical section includes information on how eco-logical logistics has been presented in the Finnish newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. The study was implemented using the desktop study method based on secondary data. The results reveal that the role of ecology in logistics has been increasing in the last twenty years. The European Union had even greater impact than expected. The conclusion on this thesis is that ecological aspects already play a big role in transports through Euro- norms and in the future in even a larger part of the supply chain....

Using Social Media and Guidelines The purpose of this Thesis is to explain what Social Media means and explore how it is used and what kind of problems it may have. It is vital to explain some of the main ideas behind Social Media such as Web 2.0, Collective Intelligence and “The Long Tail”. It is also important in order to fully understand Social Media to tell something about the most popular Social Networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. This thesis will map out possible ways to use Social Media in the business world and the main problems that are linked to it. It is also important to show how the risks can be handled by creating guidelines for better use. The main method to get examples from the real business life was to organize an inquiry. The real life examples showed different ways to use Social media. The results from the inquiry are compared to other material from literature and news and are used to create guidelines. The Results showed that Social Media is an important tool in business life in order to survive. The problems that are linked to it are sometimes seen as obstacles but there is evidence that Enterprises have been able to live with them and have been using it rather successfully. Defining on Logistics Competences The aim of this thesis was to clarify what the concept of logistics competence is containing and how the term has been understood in companies. Laurea University of Applied Sciences is taking part in the ESLogC project which is developing the system of logistics centres in Southern Finland. Laurea is participating in one of the six work packages which is called 'competence'. The objective for this survey was to chart and develop competences for the companies in the field of logistics. In addition, to define on the term 'logistics competence', this thesis has studied the methods for appraisal of competences on logistics in different companies to give a better format for future development. The thesis operated as a preliminary study for the ESLogC project. This work is a combination of logistics and human resources and some strategic leadership, as well. The theoretical frame of reference consisted of different segments of competence including for example business competence. A literature survey has also given a better understanding for the term 'logistics'. Half structured theme interviews and DACUM-based, applied classification process for competence were used as methods for examining the term in question. The interview and the classification process were carried out in various companies in the field of logistics by students in the supervisor training-pilot project. The results from the interview survey mostly supported the literature survey. Most companies are well aware of the importance of developing their logistics competence and it is being developed in several ways. Mostly logistics competence is evaluated by means of development discussions. There are, however, companies which are not training employees or making any surveys of the levels of expertise. As a concept logistics competence was mainly understood as managing entities. According to the competence classification, the company, on average, has qualified levels of know-how on logistics competence. ESLogC project got valuable background information for its own wider research. The theories and the results from this research gave some thoughts for the ESLogC project. One particular question still lies ahead: whether the research on competence should be continued in a deeper knowledge basis or not....

Comparison between New and Old Enterprise Resource Planning Systems. Case: Oy Mari-tim Ab This thesis is about the change of Oy Maritim Ab`s enterprise resource planning system, the initialization of the new system and comparison between the new and the old system. The old system was dos-based Hansa and the new is Windows-based Enterprise. The objective of this study was to create a picture to the readers why the change was needed and which one of the systems is better and fits better for the needs of the company. The main task of an enterprise resource planning system is to develop and execute its users’ business as planned. The system consists of the user, data processing equipment and data transfer equipment. Functionality of the system requires that every division is working right. The equipment can always be repaired, but the functionality of the users is depending on attitude and training. At its best, the enterprise resource planning system is an integrated tool, that enables the company to control their whole supply chain. The method used in this study is the qualitative research method. An interview was also executed. The interviewee was Maritim`s chief buyer Tomi Palomäki. The method mainly used in the interview was half structured, so it did not tie the answers to the specific answer option but it gave the interviewee a chance to answer with his own words. A four field SWOT-analysis was also used as a method. With the help of the SWOT-analysis the objective was to find out the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of the new and old system. The theory of this research is based on logistics literature, Internet based sources and the interview. A solid base of theory was built from the literature which was backfilled with Internet based sources. With the help of the interview, the study consists of the theory of the facts behind the system change and opinions of the main user in his point of view. All these facts enabled the output of some development proposals for the new system and its initialization....

Renewing the Homepages of Keravan Kori-80 This Bachelor's thesis was built around a given commission. The aim of this project was to renew the homepages of a local basketball club, in a way that the page would be able to re-spond to the needs and challenges of the present day. This basically meant that the whole concept needed to be re-designed and executed. The goal was to create both visually impres-sive and functional homepage to serve the clubs internal and external communications. In addition updating the pages was to be divided between several people instead of only one person. In implementing the project the used homepage service was customized especially to sport clubs, which made it possible to create a user-friendly homepage and divide the task of up-dating of the pages between several people. The service used was called Sporttisaitti. Both the empirical section and the theoretical section of the thesis were based on literature of creating a webpage, sports marketing, network communication and marketing. Writing the thesis also demanded familiarization to the background, operations and goals of the club as well as the target organizations stakeholders. The feedback from the club and the users of the page concerning the new homepages was very good. New doors and possibilities have been opened to the club by the influence of the new web pages. The new web pages have opened new doors and possibilities to the opera-tions of the club. Nowadays the web pages are one of the most important channels of internal communications of the club, alongside e-mail. Advertising and reportage about the functions of the club has given new possibilities to the club. Hopefully the results will be seen as a growing number of members and as positive image lift up for the club....

Image research – Case Intermunicipal Federation of Vocational Education in Western Uusimaa This study was an assignment and the purpose of the study was to identify the image of the Intermunicipal Federation of Vocational Education in Western Uusimaa within its student customers. In addition, the purpose was to study the level of similarity between two educational organisations images and identify the main differences. The study was targeted at the two educational organisations in the Intermunicipal Federation of Vocational Education: Innofocus, Adult Education Centre of Western Uusimaa and Education Centre of Western Uusimaa, LUKK. The theoretical background presented on the image and the expected and experienced service quality framework. The theoretical background also focused on how the experienced service quality affects the organisation`s image. Quantitative methods were used in the empirical research. The structured questions were replied to via the Extranet and the questionnaire was carried out in March-April 2010. The study concentrated on students’ vision and opinions on the operations of their educational institution from the viewpoint of the quality of experienced service. According to the results of the study, adult learners describe their educational organisation’s image features with the following: working-life oriented, flexible, widely recognised and with trainers of high professionalism. Adults’ opinions on teaching were very good, but mostly perceived all the operations of their educational organisation as good or excellent. Some development objectives were discovered, though. The youth sector connects its educational organisation strongly with working- life orientation, practicality and teamwork abilities. In comparison to the results of the image study in 2004 the opinions of the youth on their educational organisation have remained the same, in principle. Course options and the professionalism of teachers were considered good. The opinions on teaching tools were improved, but the results showed that other operations needed development....

Benefits that OmaElisa web service offers to corporate customers as a channel for running errands The commisioner company for this thesis was Elisa Oyj. The thesis was a division of Elisa’s larger ongoing service development process. One of the development objectives was the OmaElisa web service which the thesis was linked to. It is the first research regarding this service. The purpose of the thesis is to produce useful information concerning the development process of OmaElisa, so the purpose was to help Elisa Oyj to improve and develop the attractiveness of this service from the corporate customers’ perspective. The objective of the study was to build a working development proposal for the OmaElisa web service on the basis of theory literature, previous research, used methods and data analysis. The theoretical reference is based on literature on customer value production, customer rela-tionship management and electronic business. In addition the theoretical reference contains evaluation of previous studies that are relevant for the OmaElisa web service development process. The research material was collected using a survey questionnaire that had five sections which all included structured multiple-questions. The questionnaire was sent to 53 respondents by e-mail. Of these 11 responded to the questionnaire. The research method was quantitative. Because of the small number of responses the data was represented in a scale form instead of using a statistical program like SPSS. The results of this study showed that the development process for the OmaElisa web service is required. Securing OmaElisa web service’s security was the other important result. The results also show that Elisa’s most important task as service provider is to make sure that the information in the service is up to date. This is the third most important result of this thesis. Individual development proposals have been made for each of the research results mentioned earlier. In addition one extensive and comprehensive development proposal had been made....
