What motivates students to participate in virtual communities - CASE Massidea.org The purpose of this thesis is to examine what motivates students to join and produce content into a virtual community named Massidea.org. The research problem is approached by identifying the issues students appreciate in online communities, the issues that capture their attention and the issues students find unpleasant in online communities. Another objective is to investigate how willing the students are in developing the Massidea.org online community. The theory is produced together with my student colleague Maria Forss as she examines the same subject from another perspective in her thesis. Therefore it was decided to work together with the theoretical part. The theoretical framework presents motivation theory and examines the meaning of virtual communities. The motivation theory examines in particular the aspects external and internal motivation as well as the motivation factors related to participation in online communities. The theory about online communities focuses on their emergence, significance and exploitation. The theoretical background presents also the conclusions of earlier studies which have examined people's relationship with online communities. The study employs a qualitative research method. The target groups of this research are students in different educational programmes, students at different stages in their studies as well as students producing different amounts of content in online communities. The target group was gathered by sending a preliminary questionnaire by e-mail after which the students were chosen to be interviewed. The data was collected by interviewing 18 students and analyzed using content analysis. The outcome of the study was that students pay attention to the subject, clarity, layout and functionality of the virtual community. The most general reason for returning to the community is friends and curiosity in the content produced. Students were most concerned on data protection issues. Students wished for general clarity and information about up-to-date subjects in Massidea.org. Showing one’s expertise, a reward system and sharing experiences with other members would motivate content producing in Massidea.org. Information technology students have the most potential in developing Massidea.org. According to the results it can be said that Massidea.org should observe its functionality and layout, make sure the content is renewed frequently enough and inform clearly how data protection is processed in the community....

Internal communication - Case Decentralized bodily injury claims service in Lähivakuutus Group The objective of this research was to examine the voluntary bodily injury claims service’s internal communications within the Lähivakuutus Group, which operates in the insurance industry. The voluntary bodily injury claims service is managed in the Lähivakuutus associations which are located in the whole of Finland and in the voluntary bodily injuries unit. Due to the decentralization of the claims service, the claims service unit has become much like a support organization for the Lähivakuutus Group. The role of the support organization is to give claims advice to claims settlers working in the Lähivakuutus associations. The objective of this thesis was to examine how the internal communications could be further developed between the voluntary bodily injuries claims settlers as well as the associations’ claims settlers. The purpose was to discover whether the internal communications are as efficient and functioning as needed. The efficiency of the communication was measured based on different criteria. These were accuracy in terms of time and content, practicality, compre-hensibility and interactivity. The research question was how the internal communications could be further developed between the decentralized claim handlers and the support organisation. The research question was approached by answering the following sub questions: what is the current situation of the communications, how satisfied the claims settlers are with the flow and content of the information, and how functional the current communication channels are. The theory of this study focuses only on horizontal communication leaving vertical communication outside the research area. The main factors examined in the theoretical section were the ones focused on the efficiency and measurement of internal communication. Communication channels, information flow and communication satisfaction were concepts that were analysed in this context. The research was executed using quantitative research methods. All the voluntary bodily injury claims settlers working in the Lähivakuutus associations received a questionnaire by e-mail. This research method was used due to the decentralization of the claims service. All in all, 26 claims settlers of 40 answered the questionnaire resulting in a response rate of 65 %. The questionnaire was constructed and the conclusions were analyzed using a Webropol questionnaire and data collection application. The research results indicate that the claim handlers in the Lähivakuutus associations are satisfied with the internal communications of the organization. The need for claims service advice for the associations’ claims settlers is needed on a weekly basis. The availability of the support organization’s claims settlers and the more efficient use of the communication channels were highlighted as areas for development. Resources should also be used for interaction and cooperation especially when people are working in a decentralized environment. This research was the first one ever made in a decentralized claims function. However further studies should be made on a regular basis, in order to optimize the claims handling process....

A report on service demand of people over 65 years old The aim of this activity-oriented thesis was to produce a service demand report for Lohja City. Lohja City wants to improve its services in a way that would better satisfy the needs of people over the age of 65. The aim of the survey was to define the level of satisfaction and utilization among the selected segment. In addition, backgrounds, current conditions, abilities to cope with day-to-day tasks and computer skills of the people selected for the research were examined. The thesis was carried out as a quantitative research. The data was collected using questionnaires, which consisted of structured and open questions. The questionnaires were sent to six different districts of Lohja, which were city center, Ojamo, Virkkala, Nummentausta, Ventelä and Routio. Approximately 5000 over 65-year-olds live in these districts. About 500 people were selected randomly for the sample, which represents about ten percent of all the people over the age of 65 living in these districts. 171 people responded so the response rate was about 35 percent. The results of the survey indicated that people were generally satisfied with the services provided by Lohja City. There was, however, some dissatisfaction among the respondents concerning the health services. The utilization of computer devices or online services was insignificant among the target group. The results of the survey are intended to be used in planning and improving the service supply of Lohja City. Another intention was to find out if the survey produces new service innovations in the selected areas. The results of the survey are meant to be utilized in another thesis that will be carried out at Laurea University of Applied Sciences during 2010-2011. Liikkeenjohdon konsultointiyrityksen kasvustrategian vaihtoehdot

Yritysten kasvu on todettu keskeiseksi tekijäksi kansantalouden kehityksen, kilpailukyvyn ja työttömyyden vähenemisen kannalta. Kasvuyritys voidaan määritellä monella eri tavalla. Elinkeinoelämän Keskusliiton mukaan kasvuyritys on yritys, jonka liikevaihto on kasvanut vähintään 10 prosentilla kolmen vuoden ajan peräkkäin.
Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on löytää erilaisia kasvustrategioita, pohtia niiden haasteita, esteitä ja mahdollisuuksia sekä käsitellä parhaaksi koetun kasvustrategian käyttöönottamista. Toimeksiantajana oli pieni Yritys X liikkeenjohdon konsultoinnin toimialalta. Yritys X pyrkii kasvuun markkinoilla ja halusi tietoa kasvun mahdollisuuksista. Yritys X:n tavoitteena on kasvattaa markkinaosuutta ja liikevaihtoaan miljoonaan euroon vuoteen 2015 mennessä nykyisestä 0,5 miljoonasta eurosta. Myös henkilöstön lukumäärän halutaan kasvavan nykyisestä kuudesta työntekijästä yhteentoista henkilöön vuoden 2015 loppuun mennessä.
Oikean kasvustrategian löytämiseksi laadittiin kvalitatiivinen kysely- ja haastattelututkimus. Tutkimus
kohdennettiin Yritys X:n hallituksen jäsenille ja toimitusjohtajalle. Kysely toteutettiin sähköisesti e-
lomakkeen avulla ja tämän jälkeen vastauksia tarkennettiin puhelinhaastatteluin.
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin Yritys X:n päättäjien mielipiteet asiakastoimialojen painopisteistä, kasvun
keinoista, maantieteellisestä kasvusta, kasvun nopeudesta, kasvustrategian toteuttamistavoista ja
kasvustrategian tehostamisesta sekä suunnitteluprosessin kehittämisestä.
Tutkimuksen tuloksista selvisi, että Yritys X:n asiakastoimialat olisivat melko samoja tulevaisuudessa kuin nykypäivänäkin. Tällä hetkellä tärkeimpiä asiakastoimialoja ovat metsäteollisuus, muovi- ja metalliteollisuus sekä kaivannaisteollisuus. Tulevaisuudessa kaivannaisteollisuuden merkitys lisääntynee ja kauppa- ja maahantuonnin odotetaan tulevan mukaan asiakastoimialoihin.
Kasvun keinoista kävi ilmi, että Yritys X:n kaltaisen pienen liikeyrityksen johto ja hallitus haluavat soveltaa niin sanottua sekastrategiaa, jossa mitään kasvun keinoa ei suljeta pois. Erityisesti toimiva johto ja hallitus painottivat vastauksissaan orgaanista kasvua uusille maantieteellisille kotimarkkina-alueille Etelä- ja Länsi-Suomessa yrityksen nykyisillä tuotteilla. Kuitenkin samaan aikaan yritysjärjestelyiden ja fuusioiden mahdollisuudet haluttiin pitää avoimina. Kansainvälistymistä ei pidetty ensisijaisena kasvun keinona, mutta Yritys X haluaa kuitenkin laajentua tulevaisuudessa lähimaihin kuten Ruotsiin ja Baltian maihin.
Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että Yritys X:n päättäjät ovat hyvin kasvusuuntautuneita. Kasvun volyymin haluttiin olevan vähintään keskisuurta eli liikevaihdon kasvun toivottiin olevan yli 10 - 15 prosenttia vuodessa. Yritys X:n päättäjät olivat sitä mieltä, että kasvustrategian toteuttamista tukisi koko strategiakaudelle ulottuva strateginen tiekartta, joka tulisi purkaa vuosittaisiksi toimenpidesuunnitelmiksi....

Preventing money laundering and terrorist financing from law firm’s point of view Case: Bird & Bird Attorneys Ltd This thesis deals with preventing money laundering and terrorist financing from law firm’s point of view, especially from Bird & Bird Attorneys Ltd’s point of view. The aim was to describe the general picture of money laundering and terrorist financing and to find out how the legislation regarding those should be taken into account in a law firm. Another aim was to draw up internal instructions for preventing money laundering and terrorist financing for Bird & Bird Attorneys Ltd. The money laundering and terrorist financing was researched mainly under Finnish conditions. Both are criminalized in the criminal law and regulations on preventing those are in the law on money laundering. The law on money laundering, which came into force on 1 August 2008, extended lawyers obligations regarding obligation to identify customer, obligation to obtain information, obligation to arrange ongoing monitoring and risk-based assessment. On the Finnish Bar Association's recommendation law firms needed to draw up internal instructions regarding preventing money laundering and terrorist financing by 1 August 2009. Law firms are obliged to arrange training for staff. It is important that the staff understands what money laundering and terrorist financing means in practice. The staff needs to know its obligations and what can follow from failing to fulfil these obligations. Full understanding of the instructions requires also activity from the staff themselves. There is a fear that if the matter is not fully understood, it will not be taken seriously. There is also a fear that lawyers who do not usually act in transactions under the reporting obligation, ignore the instructions because they feel that the matter does not apply to them at all. The research material consists of literature, laws and several internet-sources such as publications of the Finnish Bar Association and the Financial Intelligence Unit. Valuable information was received also by interviewing experts in the field. I told of my own observations as an employee of Bird & Bird Attorneys Ltd. The target of this thesis was achieved. Bird & Bird Attorneys Ltd have internal instructions in use and training for the staff has been arranged. This thesis became a wide information package, in which the staff can find the information they need to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. Corporate Environmental Management Systems and Sustainability Reporting The purpose of this thesis was to investigate environmental management systems, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability reporting in five Finnish companies in retail industry. The theoretical section concentrates on describing corporate social responsibility and the leg-islation enforcing it, environmental management systems, as well as the means and contents of sustainability reporting. By using these tools, a company aims to reach the goals set for sustainable development and to acknowledge its social responsibility. The aim of the research, conducted qualitatively, was to understand the target companies’ operations by using the documents and reports published by the companies themselves. The research was based on companies’ annual reports, sustainability reports, and web sites. The research provided information on the social responsibility of the target companies, the frequency of the environmental management systems used, and the different ways of imple-menting sustainability reports. The research revealed significant differences between the companies in all aspects mentioned above. Both a standard environmental management sys-tem and a valid sustainability report, for example, were implemented only in one of the com-panies. The research was challenging, as the information available about the companies differed greatly in both quantity and quality-wise. The authors, however, learned a lot on conducting a research in general, as well as deepened their knowledge on environmental issues and their significance in responsible and profitable business operations....

The research provided information on the social responsibility of the target companies, the frequency of the environmental management systems used, and the different ways of imple-menting sustainability reports. The research revealed significant differences between the companies in all aspects mentioned above. Both a standard environmental management sys-tem and a valid sustainability report, for example, were implemented only in one of the com-panies. The research was challenging, as the information available about the companies differed greatly in both quantity and quality-wise. The authors, however, learned a lot on conducting a research in general, as well as deepened their knowledge on environmental issues and their significance in responsible and profitable business operations....
