The aim of this thesis was to collect information on intercultural competence and observe how it works in practice. The aim was to find out what kind of procedures worked best in facing intercultural interaction situations. The theoretical frame of reference intercultural interactions, cultural characteristics and hospitality. This thesis was made commissioned by Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The empirical part of the thesis consisted of theme interviews held in March, 2016. Seven people were interviewed who had several years of experience of intercultural competence. The interview included three themes which proceeded logically. The interview results were used to benefit practicalities in the international week at Laurea University of Applied Sciences in April, 2016. During the international week, it was observed how the theory and empirical information worked in practice. In the end of the thesis, suggestions were made on how a good host should act to help first–time hosts. One key conclusion was that language skills are very important. A good host has to be able to small-talk and discuss with the guests. Other vital points were scheduling, well-functioning technology and notifying the guests. The most important is to treat all guests as individuals as there may be big differences between people from the very same culture....

The purpose of this thesis was to find out how marketing supports sales when the case company is rebranding. The goal was to obtain information about which marketing actions are boosting sales and do they have an effect on consumers' images and attitudes. Brand renewal has shaped the products and also company’s core functions and there is hardly any information on how marketing methods are now supporting sales. The theoretical framework was built on the basis of the key concepts and themes which were brand, brand effects on customer images and attitudes, building a brand, rebranding and marketing as part of branding and sales promotion. This study was executed with qualitative methods. Used methods were theme interviews and ethnography. One person from Lumene’s marketing team and 7 beauty advisors were interviewed. The material from the interviews was analyzed by themes. According to the results the brand renewal has caused more positive than negative reactions. Especially sampling and social media marketing were seen as effective marketing actions. As the conclusion the consumers trust of the company probably affected the result, which is that the brand renewal has caused mainly positive reactions. It could also be said that marketing objectives are fulfilled and the company should invest in sampling and social media also in the future....

This thesis focused on work orientation and its improvement Etelä-Vantaan Taitoluistelijat Ry (EVT). EVT is a sports club that provides many possibilities to practise figure skating from single skating to synchronized skating. Skaters are mainly children and young adults, but as a part of the Nuori Suomi organisation, EVT guarantees groups for everyone interested in figure skating, regardless of age and skills. EVT is well known for its quality in coaching and wide possibilities to advance in skating. The goal of this thesis was to acquire data and theory to back up a new written plan for work orientation. At the moment of writing this thesis, there was no written plan with the whole process being confusing and time consuming. In addition there were no methods of monitoring the orientation process. This thesis was initiated mainly due to the author’s own observations during her work as a coach and the club wanting to improve its operations. The club is mainly run by volunteers, for example parents of the skaters, but also there are hired coaches. The main focus was to find ways to improve work orientation of hired employees. However, the gathered data will probably also benefit volunteers. Another goal of the research was to clarify the club’s organisational structure and every person’s job description. The theory is based on work orientation and management literature. In addition legal aspects needed to be taken into consideration. General theories on coaching and working with children were also used. Qualitative research was used to gather the data using observation, a questionnaire and theme interviews. The questionnaire provided a lot of data about the coaches and most of all about the employees that were most recently hired and to whom work orientation was current. Altogether a lot of useful information was gathered during the research. This work was also a very good way for the author to get to know colleagues and the work environment better. Useful feedback and suggestions for improving the current work orientation methods and also other procedures in general were also obtained, which will help to improve planning and also ease coaches work. Based on this research the club will start to document and write a guide book and checklist for new employees....

Verkkokaupan perustaminen : case: BL&A Kauneuskeskus

Toteutin opinnäytetyöni yritykselle BL&A Kauneuskeskus. Omistan itse yrityksestä puolet ja yhtiökumppanini Laura Lehtinen toisen puolikkaan. Opinnäytetyön aiheena ja tavoitteena oli verkkokaupan perustaminen yrityksellemme.
Opinnäytetyön aiheen tietoperusta muodostui yritystoiminnan, kilpailija-analyysin, benchmarkingin, verkkokaupan perustamisen, visuaalisen suunnittelun, markkinoinnin ja markkinointijuridiikan ympärille. Nämä teoria-aiheet tukivat verkkokaupan perustamista.
Käytännön toimenpiteinä tein ensin yrityksellemme SWOT-analyysin ja vastakkainasettelutaulukon (Confrontation Matrix). Seuraavaksi perehdyin eri verkkokauppaohjelmistoihin. Otin yhteyttä myös muutamaan eri IT-alan yritykseen Hyvinkäällä. Hyödynsin verkkokaupan perustamisessa hyvinkääläistä Mainostoimisto Reaktiota. Neuvottelin yhtiökumppanini ja mainostoimiston kanssa verkkokaupan ulkoasusta ja sisällöstä. Toteutimme verkkokaupan Mainostoimisto Reaktiota apuna käyttäen valmiiseen verkkokauppaohjelmisto pohjaan.
Opinnäytetyön lopputuloksena on perustettu verkkokauppa BL&A Kauneuskeskukselle. Opinnäytetyö antaa vinkkejä myös verkkokaupan markkinointiin. Tätä opinnäytetyötä pystyy hyödyntämään myös verkkokauppaa suunnitteleva. Verkkokaupan perustaminen vaatii paljon aiheeseen tutustumista ennen kuin sellaista kannattaa avata....

This thesis was commissioned by Emilia Karjalainen, who was at the time of the study working to establish her start-up company. The client company Emilia K. offers coaching services to individuals, groups as well as companies. Branding was thus a very timely topic for the young entrepreneur. The aim of this thesis was to help the new entrepreneur in creating a brand and to clarify what branding encompasses. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on branding theory: what does it really mean, where does branding originate from, why it is so important and what are the strong brands in Finland and around the world. In addition, the theoretical part examines what brand-building means in practice and the issues that need to be considered regarding branding. The theoretical part has been kept simple and optimized in order for other micro-enterprises to be able to benefit from it also. After the theoretical part, this study focuses on working on the brand together with the client as well as covering all aspects and actions needed to build a brand. The end result was a well thought-out brand, which will grow continuously and evolve over time, intended for the fresh entrepreneur. The cornerstones of the Emilia K. brand are honesty, positivity, visibility in social media and thoughtfully built networks....

The theme of this thesis was the law of witness protection programme. This thesis benefits students and people who are interested in criminal law and procedural law and the alternatives to protect witnesses. The purpose of the thesis was to clarify the necessity of the law of witness protection programme in Finland and its background and purpose. In this thesis was defined; what is the meaning of witness and which duties does a witness have at different stages of the criminal procedure. The “just” trial was also brought up because it is easier to understand when the witness protection programme is necessary by studying about it. The other valid methods to protect a witness were also considered in this thesis. The research problem of the thesis was to find out if the other methods to protect witnesses are sufficient and in which situations the witness protection programme might be used and why it is used. The cross disagreements which are related to the law were also dealt with as the research problem. The government proposals, statements about the government proposal, updated legislation, literature which is related to the subject and publications and interviews were used as a source material in this thesis. The interviews were semi-structured and the focus of the interviews was to clarify the necessity of the witness protection programme in practice. The main result of the study is a report in relation to the meaning the law of witness protection programme and when it can be needed. The witness protection programme is needed when organized crime is connected to the criminal cases. The subject can be studied in the future by focusing on the use of the law in practice if it is possible for example to obtain statistical data about it. The use of the law is very connected with secret information so it is hard to find sources about it....
