The thesis was a part of the Municipality of Lapinjärvi, Laurea and Aalto University´s Resource-smart with a human touch – project, where the resource wisdom activities of the municipality of Lapinjärvi are spread among the residents and companies of the area to develop new business. The development task was to support companies towards resource wisdom and the circular economy business. The research problem of the thesis was ash waste from thermal power plants in Lapinjärvi and the surrounding areas, and the purpose was to find ways to utilize the ash side stream. The goal was to present business proposals and models from the ash side stream. The theoretical framework of the thesis is a new sustainable and resource-wise economic model, the circular economy, as well as innovation activities and business models and ecosystems that promote and enable the transition towards circular economy. The thesis is a case study in which the service design with double diamond process is carried out and a benchmarking study is conducted. In the first stage of the process, the operating environment is monitored and analysed using PESTE analysis, to find useful utilization ideas of ash. In the second stage operating model options are defined and the selected development target, recycled fertilizer business, is evaluated by means of a SWOT analysis. In the third development phase, a solution-driven benchmarking study is conducted on the recycled fertilizer industry and using wood ash as a fertilizer in the forests. In the final implementation phase, the Lapinjärvi business ecosystem and the closed cycle of ash is modelled, and a triple layered circular economy business model is outlined, based on the traditional business model canvas, but so that the effects of ecosystem level and sustainability impact are considered. Also, the roadmap to the future actions is modelled. The recycled fertilizer business is the emerging business of the future that can replace fertilizers made from fossil minerals and make the EU self-sufficient in their production. To promote sustainable forest growth, forests should be managed in a way that increases the volume of carbon sinks to slow down climate change, while enabling sustainable forest use by increasing tree growth and nature biodiversity....

The completion of this thesis was motivated by the process of rapid social change, where the forms of work change, and employment relationships diversify. The social change requires both structural change and the commitment and ability of citizens to make active decisions for the sustainability of society. It can be argued that it’s particularly important for people who are considering entrepreneurship or staring their transition from student life to working life to know the various criteria for sustainable business, thus influencing a sustainable future. The societal situation justified the development task of how teaching can contribute to the formation of students’ values as the development of skills in vocational education plays an important role in supporting citizens' sustainable decision-making capacity. The thesis was carried out during 2021 at Omnia's Leppävaara campus and the subject of the study was the experience of one group of students regarding their own possibilities to influence the sustainable future as a consumer, employee, and entrepreneur. In addition, the thesis examines students' understanding of sustainability and their awareness of the forces of change and megatrends as drivers for the future. The aim was to develop and strengthen the value base of students' eco-social thinking and Bildung and to enable the development of abilities and knowledge into motivation. A student who is motivated by social, economic, and environmental responsibility can apply the model of eco-social culture of responsibility, interpersonalism and reasonableness further in their behavior as a consumer, employee, and entrepreneur. The thesis was conducted as a development work, in which the methods of qualitative case research were applied. The qualitative methods were supplemented by means of questionnaires. The material for the development work was collected through questionnaires and observation of a group of students. The development task sought to understand the target group of students, changes in their experience and understanding, and the ability to detect future drivers. It was possible to answer development questions in part through empirical material. The results show that teaching can influence current thinking patterns and the accumulation of knowledge. In the right environment, the use of a new knowledge base is linked to the student’s own values and moral perceptions that enable action. And in this case, the target group’s knowledge of the elements of responsible business, their own opportunities for influence and their ability to perceive the future were initiated. Further research and development from the perspective of a sustainable future and responsibility should be extended to the teaching of vocational subjects, either on a sectoral basis or as cross-cutting research in different fields. The review of the topic should focus on how the responsibility of ecology, sociality and economics is addressed and linked to practical exercises during studies. In addition, there is a need for stronger joint development in the teaching of professional and common units of the degree and the experimentation with diverse implementation models. Keywords: eco-social thinking and Bildung, enterpreneurship, future awareness, responsibility, vocational education...

Climate change is one of the biggest crises of our era. The earth warms as a result of human activity, which has severe consequences. Finland is committed to UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals with other UN Member States. Municipalities and cities will implement nearly 60 % of the goals. The aim is to study the status of environment responsibility of the City of Huittinen, define 2030 targets and intermediate goals, measures and conditions to reach the targets and to manage environmental responsibility. The goal is to create a climate/ environment responsibility program on council level, that helps Huittinen with adaptation and mitigation to climate change. The program considers the UN SDG Agenda 2030 targets, and other national environment and climate obligations and demands that municipals are involved in. The program will increase knowledge of the environment responsibility, networks and concepts among the policy-makers in Huittinen. The program will support Huittinen 2030 town-strategy, and the City of Huittinen as a socially, ecologically and econimically sustainable town. The theoretical part reviews climate change, its reasons and consequences, sustainable development conditions and targets, statuses of sustainable development and climate actions done in municipalities, and matters that are likely to prevent or promote the actions. This thesis is a research and development work and was made based on a constructive study method. The environment responsility status of Huittinen was studied with a survey. An environment responsibility program was devoped based on resource wisdom in five workshops. The themes were: no emissions, no waste, no over-consumption and sustainable well-being. The main methods used in the workshops were benchmarking, brainstorming, co-creation, mapping, and SWOT-analysis. As a result,” Resource Wise Huittinen 2030” environment responsibility program was created. It contains six main targets, 15 sub targets and 63 actions. The program consists of two parts: the strategical part that was approved in Huittinen town council 13.6.2022 and the operative part where the actions are listed and will be the planning tool of the employees. Resource Wise Huittinen 2030 environment responsibility program considers the UN SDG Agenda 2030 targets, Satakunta climate- and energy strategy and the development topics noticed in the survey. By implementing the program, the City of Huittinen will decrease their greenhouse gas emissions, even though no numeral emission target was set. The results of the thesis can be expanded to and utilized in other towns and municipalities that have not yet started their climate / sustainability work. Further development recommendations are to investigate options to join Hinku-network and other sustainable development/ climate networks and to ensure adequacy in both resources and competence when implementing and developing the program further....

Kiertotalouden keinoin kohti ekologisempaa lemmikkieläinalaa
(2023)
on tarjolla valtava määrä. Ekologisten tuotteiden tai palvelujen tarjonta on kuitenkin toistaiseksi hyvin vähäistä. Lemmikkieläinala on vielä selvästi vihreän siirtymän alkutaipaleella. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää mitä ekologisia tuotteita ja...
To fight climate change, there is a pressure for reducing carbon emissions within the EU. Finland targets to become a carbon neutral nation by 2035. A central step towards this goal is reducing the overconsumption of natural resources by implementing circular economy. However, there are five alternative circular economy business models, and their suitability may vary across different fields of commerce, creating the need for assessment prior to their implementation. While there is a large selection of pet consumables, few of these are ecological nor are the services. The pet industry is in a relatively early phase towards a green transition. The aim of this thesis is to explore the availability of ecological pet products, identify what actions could be done to make the industry more ecological, collect and analyze the consumers` evaluation of the negative impacts of pet products and survey what kind of ecological products and services the consumers would like to use. The purpose of this thesis is to assess what circular economy models are implementable to the pet industry, while giving development proposals to how the industry can become more ecological. The findings of this thesis could support the consultation enterprise of Gaia Consulting. The theoretical framework reviews sustainable development, circular economy and the circular economy business models, sustainable consumer behavior and the important role of younger people mitigating climate change. Additionally, the EU green deal program and Finland’s circular economy goals, linear economy, megatrends, EU strategy for textiles and Finnish household consumption and its carbon footprint are discussed. In the empirical part of the thesis, qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied. Five specialists within the pet industry were interviewed regarding the current and future situation of the industry. To gain consumer perspective, a survey was widely distributed through social media as well as conducted on site at a pet store in Helsinki. Through the interviews it became evident that some companies have already made plans to make their operations greener. Additionally, the consumer results showed that there is a high interest for ecological products and services. The results of this study suggest that all the five circular economy business models could be utilized towards a more sustainable growth of the industry. Elements such as sustainable design, resale and repair are particular keystones towards a green transition. The results are also relevant in other similar fields of commerce such as kids and baby consumables and sales of seasonal products. Legislation, economic incentives and consumer demand are important drivers when moving towards a circular economy. To facilitate the transition, companies and consumers should be able to establish a dialogue for the development and demand to meet. Companies should also utilize their pre-existing customer relations to speed up the transition towards a circular economy. Companies in the pet industry have a strong potential to develop and implement circular economy business models for which there is available fundings. Changing the overall consumer attitudes to become more circular economy friendly accompanied by a positive communication around the topic are crucial attributes for a successful transition.
