Elinkaaripalveluiden käyttöönotto yrityksen menestystekijänä
(2023)
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on auttaa anonyymiksi jäävää toimeksiantajaa perustamaan elinkaaripalvelut. Tämä kuuluu yrityksen tulevaisuuden strategiaan.
Opinnäytetyössä elinkaaripalveluiden mahdollisuuksia selvitettiin kahdella eri tutkimuksella.
On tärkeää ottaa asiakkaiden näkemys palautteen keräämiseen.

This thesis is a case study. It describes the development project of the key partnership concept for Laurea Circular Economy Living Lab, which is used to support the circular transformation of the key partners. The objective of this case study, was to discover the drivers and challenges of circular economy transformation and the best ways to support an organisation in its circular transformation within the living lab environment. This case study was commissioned by Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The theoretical framework of this study was compiled by studying the concepts of circular economy, circular transfromation, circular business models, drivers and challenges of circular economy and the living lab. The theory investigated was chosen mainly from fresh, peer-reviewed research articles. The development task was carried out by three students of Laurea University of Applied Sciences and four key partners of Laurea in the ways of co-development and the Double Diamond framework of service design. Two other organisations were also interviewed. In the first phase, “Discover”, students defined the problem and objects of the development task. It also included gathering the backround framework of the related theory. The second phase, “Define”, the research group gathered customer insight by interviewing the organisations and analysing their answers. The “Develop” phase was implemented as a co-creation workshop with the key partners. It was held to identify the services Laurea could offer in its Circular Living Lab in order to help the circular transformation of the key partner organisations. The last “Define” phase included developing the final concept and publishing it. The concept that was created as a result of the co-creation development process, included services and methods that Laurea can use in supporting the key partners in their transformation process within the living lab environment. The main focus points of the consept were solutions to gaining more knowledge about circular economy, finding networks, and research and development for identifying circular possibilities. The result of the development task, the key partner concept, corresponded well with the needs of Laurea. The concrete services and methods listed in the concept design are in line with the findings made from the theory and interviews about what kind of support different organisations could need in their transfromation process, which means that one can find the research reliable and useful. The results of the development process show, that organisations could benefit from many types of support in their circular transformation, and that a living lab run by an academy is able to provide a network or services that will help find solutions to different transformation challenges. If further research were to be done on the matter, it would be beneficial to discover more closely the needs of an organisation in a certain phase of circular transformation. To fight climate change, there is a pressure for reducing carbon emissions within the EU. Finland targets to become a carbon neutral nation by 2035. A central step towards this goal is reducing the overconsumption of natural resources by implementing circular economy. However, there are five alternative circular economy business models, and their suitability may vary across different fields of commerce, creating the need for assessment prior to their implementation. While there is a large selection of pet consumables, few of these are ecological nor are the services. The pet industry is in a relatively early phase towards a green transition. The aim of this thesis is to explore the availability of ecological pet products, identify what actions could be done to make the industry more ecological, collect and analyze the consumers` evaluation of the negative impacts of pet products and survey what kind of ecological products and services the consumers would like to use. The purpose of this thesis is to assess what circular economy models are implementable to the pet industry, while giving development proposals to how the industry can become more ecological. The findings of this thesis could support the consultation enterprise of Gaia Consulting. The theoretical framework reviews sustainable development, circular economy and the circular economy business models, sustainable consumer behavior and the important role of younger people mitigating climate change. Additionally, the EU green deal program and Finland’s circular economy goals, linear economy, megatrends, EU strategy for textiles and Finnish household consumption and its carbon footprint are discussed. In the empirical part of the thesis, qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied. Five specialists within the pet industry were interviewed regarding the current and future situation of the industry. To gain consumer perspective, a survey was widely distributed through social media as well as conducted on site at a pet store in Helsinki. Through the interviews it became evident that some companies have already made plans to make their operations greener. Additionally, the consumer results showed that there is a high interest for ecological products and services. The results of this study suggest that all the five circular economy business models could be utilized towards a more sustainable growth of the industry. Elements such as sustainable design, resale and repair are particular keystones towards a green transition. The results are also relevant in other similar fields of commerce such as kids and baby consumables and sales of seasonal products. Legislation, economic incentives and consumer demand are important drivers when moving towards a circular economy. To facilitate the transition, companies and consumers should be able to establish a dialogue for the development and demand to meet. Companies should also utilize their pre-existing customer relations to speed up the transition towards a circular economy. Companies in the pet industry have a strong potential to develop and implement circular economy business models for which there is available fundings. Changing the overall consumer attitudes to become more circular economy friendly accompanied by a positive communication around the topic are crucial attributes for a successful transition.
