From Specialist Centered Design towards User Centered Design The purpose of this thesis was to solve how the methods of user centered design could be used in developing design practises in a financial corporate. The theoretical framework was based on defining the user centered design, user centered design process, being the essence and meaning of user knowledge, the applied and innovative user centered design methods and co-design. The research was executed by applying the applied and innovative user centered methods and methods of co-design in on-going design and development projects of private customers of a retail bank x within a unit responsible for deposit and loan products. The methods used in this research were observation, postcard probe, future workshop, design game and the applied method of the retail bank x of Living lab. The design and development projects where the methods were adapted were the development and test of a new product, innovation of new products and services, finding a name for a new product and the development of an existing product. The research showed that using applied and innovative methods of the user centered design supports the possibility of collecting also that kind of knowledge which could not necessarily be collected by using traditional methods. The research also showed that innovation, design and interaction between different stakeholders can be improved and optimized by using co-design methods especially in a large company. For future development, in this thesis it was proposed, that the research department of retail bank x would produce more specific user knowledge to support product design, the product design process would be developed to be more like an iterative user centered design process. Existing customer knowledge and co-operation with existing customer network would be used more efficiently in product design and the product design process would be completed by working innovation process. Also it was proposed that the applied methods of Live lab in re-tail bank x would be defined, developed more like existing method of Living lab or to use existing Living labs for supporting user centered design....

Assessing and Developing Usability Maturity of R&D User-centered design is used to ensure that the products developed are useful, easy to use and pleasant to operate. The research and development department (R&D) of the company the researcher works for, has used user-centered design methods in development projects for about five years. The researcher’s role in the R&D involves industrial design and usability engineering in the R&D projects. So the researcher has had a first row seat to witness the establishing of these two design functions inside the R&D. In this study the company will be presented under a cover name Yritys Oyj. The study presents the benefits and challenges that a technology company, such as Yritys Oyj can confront, when establishing the usability engineering function as a part of R&D. Even though the user-centered activities have been conducted for several years, the role is still somewhat undefined. One challenge is to recognize how to utilize the limited resources in the most efficient way. To incorporate the usability engineering function as a part of R&D´s ongoing practice, there is a need to join the usability engineering as a part of product development process. In the empirical section of the study the usability engineering process is joined to product development process. This is achieved by conducting a process definition workshop with the key stakeholders. The human-centered design for interactive systems ISO 9241-210 –standard is used as a theoretical base. After the workshop the graphical presentation of the process model was refined. To find out the current status of usability engineering at Yritys Oyj the fresh process model was used as a reference model for usability maturity assessments. Three (3) case-projects were assessed. The goal of the assessments was to find out the strengths and weaknesses of usability engineering and make suggestions for future improvement actions. As a result of the assessments a general view of the case-projects and usability maturity of R&D with strengths and weaknesses was achieved. The assessment results enabled the researcher to make suggestions for future improvement actions....

Towards Improved Web Services at Library – Case Metropolia Libraries provide several services on the web. The library OPAC (Open Access Catalog) is among the most important ones. Libraries have traditionally been places of expertise on information retrieval, and it has been one of the libraries’ core functions. The Internet has opened the possibility to search for information for all. On order to cope with the competition, libraries’ OPACs should be as usable and simple as possible. The change in people’s information seeking behavior also has an effect on the demand they have on OPACs. A self-service system like an OPAC should be as usable as possible. Also web service design, user-centered design, and the most essential elements of usability are presented in the thesis. There are two kinds of knowledge: tacit and explicit. In the theory section of the thesis the idea of tacit knowledge emergence with the SECI-model in a place called ba is presented. The action theory and the theory of developmental work research are discussed. What these theories have in common is that they describe an action that produces an outcome: for example the emergence of the users’ tacit knowledge or a better web service. Collaboration and interaction make it possible to get valuable information on the users’ needs regarding web services. The methods used in the study were usability tests, product reaction cards, and workshops. The subject of the usability tests was the library’s new OPAC, which was released in March 2011. Four usability tests were conducted. The identified usability problems were mainly small, but there were a few bigger ones, as well. Most of the identified usability problems were fixed before the release of the new MetCat. Aside the usability tests product desirability was measured with Product reaction cards. The outcome was surprisingly positive. The service was described for example as neutral, clean and usable. Most of the selected cards were of a positive nature. The workshops were inspired by future workshops in regard of their three phases: critique phase, fantasy phase and implementation phase. In the critique phase the problems of the present state were investigated. In the fantasy phase new ideas to solve the present problems were generated. In the implementation phase the ideas of the fantasy phase were evaluated in regard to their practicability. There were two workshops: one with the students and one with the library staff. As an outcome practical suggestions for development were gained. In addition, some ideas were obtained of what the library web services are required now and in the future....

Let the User Innovate – Participatory Design Tools and Workshop Development with Activity Theory The generative tools of participatory design are intended to be used for collecting user data usually at the Fuzzy-Front-End of product development. However, the methods of organizing and analyzing the user data vary greatly at the moment. It must have an effect on the quality of the results, such as the coverage of the user data, comparability and comprehensibility. This study focuses on how a generative participatory design tool works in a participatory design workshop. The tool is designed by the self-owned company Preeriapingviini Oy. Using the research data the user data summary cards based on the activity theory were created. The goal with these activity cards is to ease the evaluation and analysis processes of the results of the workshops and to help the design work in product development. This thesis consists of a theory section in which the frame of reference theories are introduced, the participatory design and activity theory. The empirical research part of the study consists of three workshops related to different hobbies. In the workshops the users designed a portable digital device related to their hobby using the generative design tool. The final part of thesis examines the suitability of the tool for its purpose and also the activity theory based analysis tools that were developed on the basis of the workshops. The Human-Centered Design ISO 9241-210 standard has also worked as a general theoretical frame of reference behind this thesis. The development part of the research helped to find out whether or not the model of using generative tools in participatory design in workshops is functional in every aspect. The results of some of the workshops that were organized have shown that there was not enough information on the whole structure of an activity. That, however, revealed the benefits of the activity theory. It can be used to outline for the researchers and designers those parts of the activity that might need further study. The model provided by the activity theory can be applied to other workshops carried out with participatory design tools. Assuming this is the case, using any innovative methods in connection with the general model of the activity theory the results are more commensurate even in the Fuzzy-Front-End of the product development process. It helps both research and design to focus their resources on the right direction....

Forms of methodological learning by entrepreneurs in a novel business learning environment This purpose of this research-based development project was to clarify the willingness of entrepreneurs based in western Uusimaa to aquire qualification-oriented training and to create a new kind of learning environment model on the basis of methodical learning. The main objective of this study was to determine the factors that affect willingness to undertake entrepreneurial education and the ways in which entrepreneurs wish to complete the degree in general education and receive training as an entrepreneurs. The study was conducted using quantitative research methods, which were similar to the constructive research approaches. The actual questionnaire survey data was collected through an electronic form in the autumn of 2009. Questionnaires were sent to the Uudenmaan Yrittäjät ry of Lohja, Nummi-Pusula, Karjaa, Sammatti, Karjalohja, Karkkila and Siuntio members of the association through the development manager. The theoretical section is divided into three parts, where the starting point is Laurea University of Applied Science’s development-based learning model (Learning by Developing). The first part deals with methodological learning theory and concepts. After this forms of adult education at polytechnic level are covered with a focus on the various alternatives for entrepreneurial education in the business subject area. The third part consists of an analysis of statistical information regarding entrepreneurs in western Uusimaa, such as gender, age, educational background and business activity. In addition to the theoretical knowledge base the thesis presents empirical data for the creation of a new development model using information acquired from the Association of Uusimaa Entrepreneurs, Education and Cultural Ministry guidelines, Employment and Economy Ministry publications, Board of Education statistics, studies from Statistics Finland, degree programmes from Universities of Applied Sciences and research and newspaper articles related to the subject. The study shows that western Uusimaa entrepreneurs feel that the development of training and enterprise is both important and topical for the immediate future. The study also provided information on the education needs of entrepreneurs operating in the area of education and with this information it may be possible to consider further measures for methodical learning in accordance with the example model in diverse business education programs. A doctoral research proposal is presented in the form of a possible skills questionnaire for entrepreneurs in information and communication technologies (ICT) through which information about entrepreneurs’ personal competence for the design and creation of learning environments can be acquired. Another future development proposal could be a development model in accordance with double-graduate opportunities such as secondary education and Bachelor of Business Administration degree or a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and Master's degree to run....

International launch plan for a Global Brand though Social Media The target of this thesis and the related research development project was to create an international launch plan for the global brand of the target company by using means of Social Media. The assignment for the target company was carried out as a research development project. The research problem was: how to launch an international brand by utilizing the tools and means of Social Media? The research problem was approached from several angles, including internationalisation, brand creation, launch marketing and Social Media. The theoretical framework focuses on internationalisation and international business, brand and building a global brand, launch marketing and social media and its utilisation in business in question. Research data in the development project was gathered through five open company interviews. Topics in the interviews were based of the research problem, and included internationalisation, brand creation, launch process and utilization of the social media in these companies. Interviews were analysed and findings were studied and processed through benchmarking tools. According to the findings, internationalisation is challenging for small and medium sized enterprises, brand creation requires long term efforts and the utilisation of Social Media tools depends on resource allocation of the company. The international launch plan for the target company was drafted based on the best practices found in the study. According to the plan, the target company launches both the brand as well as the products in European markets during year 2012. The plan covers challenges in the market, required resources and includes an operational plan for the launch itself and for utilisation of Social Media tools in the launch. The outcome of the study indicates that in order to successfully launch an international brand using Social Media tools, the companies need a welldefined strategy for internationalisation, brand creation and utilisation of Social Media tools. Lacking thorough planning and consideration, both the launch and the business itself may be jeopardised. Based on this study there is a need for further analysis in the fields of launch success and developing launch plan further. Also the selection of Social Media tools and their effect on the international target group should be analysed. Besides the previously mentioned, further study is suggested in the fields of international logistics and building a retailerreseller network in the European market. If the retailerreseller network fails to support the internationalisation strategy and meet the target groups, will the launch in the European market be extremely challenging for the companies....

Uskalla kuunnella vierasta : Käyttäjäkeskeinen suunnittelu ja draamamenetelmien käyttö tapahtumamarkkinoinnissa
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2011)
Tutkimukselle asetetut tavoitteet saavutettiin. Tutkimus osoitti, että draamamenetelmillä on mahdollista osallistaa käyttäjiä tapahtumissa ennen kokemattomalla tavalla. Näin yrityksillä on mahdollista päästä entistä lähemmäksi käyttäjää ja näin saada uutta käyttäjätietoa. Vastavuoroisesti käyttäjät kokevat oman arvonsa merkityksen yritykselle ja näin sitoutuvat tähän paremmin. Toiminnallisena menetelmänä draama tarjoaa myös tapahtumissa kaivattua elämyksellisyyttä.
Jatkotutkimusaiheina esitettiin eri tekniikoiden toimivuuden vertailua, käyttäjätiedon keräyksen sujuvuutta, yritysedustajien tarvitseman perehdytyksen laajuutta ja draamamenetelmien toimivuutta asiakastilaisuuksissa....
