The subject of this thesis is to target a grocery shop’s marketing. The purpose is to examine some functional marketing techniques, consumers’ buying behavior and what kind of marketing in the grocery shop field interest the consumers. The objective is to create profiles to the commissioner. With the customer profiles and other collated material the commissioner is able to target the marketing at different customer segments. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are used in this thesis. Scrutinizing the consumers is a considerable part of this thesis but also the commissioner’s opinions have been taken into account. Because the commissioner does not want to publish the company’s name, Putiikki is used as the name of the target company throughout the thesis. The task is to segment customer groups and list objects that influence both the purchasing decisions and shop environment. The objective is to examine how the company’s marketing methods operate and how the different customer segments experience those methods. Furthermore, the customers are inquired about the details what could be done better in the shop’s marketing. The theoretical context includes the operational environment, marketing communications and customer’s actions in the grocery shop. The operational environment concentrates on the grocery store field in general. It also focuses on service and environment which both are associated with the operational environment. The theoretical framework on marketing communications consists of marketing and customer segmentation. Consumers’ buying behavior and the process of buying create one part of the theoretical framework. The commissioner was interested in service design so the thesis was implemented with service design methods. The empirical section is comprised of the service design process which includes determination, examination and planning. Brainstorming and customer journey are the theoretical methods. Survey and shadowing were both conducted in Putiikki. The last of the service design methods is planning, which completes the results for the profiles. The objective of the thesis was to create profiles so that the commissioner can target their marketing. The commissioner has been given templates for each customer segment and with those the company can create targeted marketing for the wanted customer segment or product. The profiles were innovated for five sections of each segment which were families, older people, local and organic food diners, athletics and quality consciousness customers. Case Lasipalatsin aukio – Tapahtumatoiminnan kehittäminen talvikaudelle
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2014)
The Lasipalatsi Square, located in the centre of Helsinki, is well valued both as a location and as a part of historical scene of the city, but has only been in little use as an event venue during the winter season. As the majority of events are annually organized in spring or summer, there was a need for development work concerning event possibilities and activities in order to extend the actual event season and to develop rental event usage of the square. The purpose of the thesis was the expansion of the event season at the Lasipalatsi Square and the work was commissioned by Lasipalatsi Media Centre. The thesis specifically concentrates on winter events as an area of event production. The work was done as a functional development work with the objective of designing operating concepts and different event types and activities for winter use at the Lasipalatsi Square. The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of event production, urban culture and seasonality in the event business. Using a qualitative research method, the data was gathered with the means of benchmarking, survey and observation. In benchmarking the focus was on open-air events during the winter season and on all the elements that had been taken into account in the production work. The survey studied the customer perspective and customers’ experiences of winter season events in urban surroundings, as well as their interest in different event types and the attractiveness of the Lasipalatsi Square as an event venue. The observation focused on the physical elements of the Lasipalatsi Square. The results showed that there is interest in winter events in an urban environment, but there is room for improvement in the supply and amenities of winter season happenings. The results also demonstrated that the milieu and ambience of the Lasipalatsi Square are certainly valued by customers and city-goers, but the location and reputation as an event venue are faced by challenges. The outputs of this thesis were different development proposals concerning the expansion of winter use and winter activity planning at the Lasipalatsi Square. Suggestions of event types and activities suitable for the winter season and the Lasipalatsi Square were created through brainstorming. The uniqueness of the event, winter theme, the demand for the event type and event suitability especially for the Lasipalatsi Square were specifically taken into consideration when forming the final development proposals. The objective of Lasipalatsi Media Centre is to transform the Lasipalatsi Square into a rich cultural location. New ideas were created concerning the improvement of event operations during the winter season for Lasipalatsi and the operators involved in the winter season. The thesis benefits both Lasipalatsi and current and future winter event organizers at the square. The work may also be useful for other leaseholders of outdoor spaces....

Maailma kylässä 2014 -festivaalin kävijätutkimus
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2014)
Tutkimus on toteutettu jo monena vuonna...
The purpose of the thesis was to provide information to Kepa ry about festival visitors and their opinions, experiences and attitudes. The information was collected through a visitor survey on the World Village Festival. The survey has been carried out for a number of years in a row. Kepa ry, which this thesis was also commissioned by, is the main organizer of the World Village Festival. Kepa is also the umbrella organization for hundreds of non-governmental organizations and an organization expert in development policy. The organization's aspiration is to inspire people to act in such a way that the world would be a fairer place. World Village Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Finland and at the same time also the largest organization, development and multicultural event. Each year, the event gathers tens of thousands of visitors to the site. The program varies, and on offer are music and dance performances, discussions about topical issues, food from different countries, as well as artistic programs. The theoretical framework presents the factors that affect the customer's service experience, as well as the service processes which the customer confronts at the festival. The theoretical framework also focuses on the implementation of quantitative research, as well as form interview as a research tool. The sample of the survey was 526 answers. The research material was collected by interviewing visitors in the festival area during the weekend. The visitor survey was carried out as a quantitative research, because research material that can be generalized to more than tens of thousands of visitors’ was needed. The research tool used was form interview, because a method that allows a collection of large research material over the weekend was needed. The interviews were carried out in a semi-structured interview form, in which most of the questions and answer options were given in advance. The interviewers were volunteers of the festival and students from Laurea University of Applied Sciences. By means of the research results, essential information about the visitors of the festival was successfully provided to Kepa. Useful information was also received from visitors' attitudes and their experiences at the festival. The results were also compared to previous years, and based on this information it was possible to present development suggestions for the festival’s organizer for the coming years. The results of the survey will help Kepa to reform the festival in the future and to develop it to correspond better with the needs of the customers....

This thesis was commissioned by Corporation X. Corporation X is an international organization that works in multiple fields. This thesis focuses on the machine department of Corporation X, which was selected as the main research target. The objective of the thesis was to research the current state of competence management in the machine department and form development ideas based on the research results. The purpose of the created development ideas was to give Corporation X tools to further improve its competence management. Competence management has become vital for organizations. Successful competence man-agement used to be a competitive edge by which organization could edge out their competitors but in today’s fierce and global market it has become a central topic of organizational planning. Organizations are forced to focus more resources on competence management in order to stay ahead of the curve. In this thesis competence management was researched qualitatively at a general level, meaning that for example sales figures were not included. The theoretical background for the thesis consists of three main topics which are “competence and tacit knowledge”, “competence man-agement” and “learning organization”. These topics worked as a guideline from which a bigger picture about competence management was built. The research methods used in this thesis were two semi-structured interviews and an e-questionnaire. The research methods were built in unison with the theoretical framework in order to gain valid information. The purpose of the interviews was to gather information from workers, who are in positions comparable to that of a manager. The information from the interviews was then analyzed and from the results an e-questionnaire for other employees of the machine department was drawn up. By comparing the results from the interviews and the e-questionnaire a general view of the state of competence management in the machine department was formed. As a result the study revealed that the employees at the machine department need training par-ticularly in IT skills, product knowledge and technical specs. The results also indicated that Corporation X should try to strengthen the co-operation of its different departments. It also became clear that Corporation X does not have unified guide lines for competence management that the managers could use. The development ideas presented in the thesis include sharing tacit knowledge inside the de-partment during training and further development of a competence matrix that Corporation X uses. The development ideas presented are easy to implement and do not require drastic changes in order to make a difference. However, some of the development ideas may need further re-search before they can be implemented. Keywords: competence, competence management, learning organization, tacit knowledge...

Nuorten ja ikääntyneiden ajatukset Kodintola-konseptista
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2014)
In Finland communal living is believed to become more popular, but enthusiasm has been spo-radic. Communal living can bring help to loneliness. Sharing spaces and things can bring savings. Community and communal living can also be a great alternative for elders. This thesis was commissioned by Jouko Kivimetsä, who works as Development Manager at Inno Omnia. The objective of this thesis was to study what kind of opinions the target group has about the living concept Kodintola. The purpose of the thesis was to gather ideas for developing the concept. The first research question was how the target group would perceive the concept. The second research question was how to improve the concept. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of the concept presentation and perspectives on housing. The framework also describes the target group of the concept. The study was carried out in the form of eight theme interviews. The analytical research methodology was qualitative. The data was gathered through interviews with young and senior people who came from Finland and Sweden. The interviews were carried out during spring and summer 2014. The analysis method was data-driven. According to the interviewees the positive aspects of the concept are company, sharing and safety. Both target groups felt that the company of other people is clearly the most positive aspect of the concept. Both groups felt that the concept makes it possible to meet new people and have company without any obligations. Sharing spaces and things was also mentioned as a good side of the concept. Many of the interviewees also combined sharing with lower prices. Safety is also seen as a positive side of this concept. Answers concerning safety mainly came from the older interviewees. One of the topics of concerns, which some interviewees had, was getting along with other people. Interviewees were also worried about whether there was enough space to be shared but also enough personal space. Refinement of the concept, branding and clearer definition of the concept, were mentioned as possible areas of improvements. Interviewees also mentioned that they would like to have events and activities alongside services. Keywords Community, housing concept, living in community...

The subject of the thesis is the exhibitor survey of the World Village 2014 festival. The purpose of the quantitative survey was to clarify the exhibitors' experiences and opinions on the festival. The objective of the survey was to list ideas which could develop exhibitor activity in the festival next year. There were three survey questions: why did the exhibitors participate in the World Village festival this year, how do they estimate the success of the festival from their own point of view and how would they develop the festival next year. The commissioner of the exhibitor survey was the main organiser of the World Village festival, Kepa ry. It is the Service Centre for Development Cooperation, which serves as the parent organisation for more than 300 citizen organisations and as the expert organisation of global development questions. The World Village festival is the most visible one of all Kepa’s events and it is also one of the biggest cultural events in Finland. It collects tens of thousands of visitors, hundreds of exhibitors and dozens of performers to Helsinki every year. In 2014 it was organized for the fifteenth time in May. The theoretical framework of the survey consists of theory on organizing a cultural event. It was mainly dealt with from the point of view of the festival or another big public event. The organizing starts from planning which is the most laborious and longest phase of organizing an event. The following phase is the realization in which the plan is put into practice. The last phase is the evaluation phase, which is an extremely important part of the whole event organizing process. The exhibitor survey was carried out as a questionnaire. In the survey total sample was used because all the exhibitors of the festival were given the opportunity to participate in the survey. There were altogether 469 exhibitors and 208 answers were obtained. The results of the survey were compared between different exhibitor groups as cross tabulation because it was crucial to know how the membership organisations found the festival. On the basis of the results a description of a typical exhibitor was formed. The most important subjects of development for the festival were collected from the results of the survey....

Underground-elämystapahtuman järjestäminen: BASC One Year Anniversary
(Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2014)
The objective of this thesis was to improve the efficiency of an event organizing process. The event organizer has been operating for almost one year in Buenos Aires. The commissioner, Proyecto House, has organized approximately monthly Buenos Aires Sound Culture (BASC) events, which operate under a strong electronic music old school concept. The concept has gained reputation and the events have succeeded well, but not with enough profit when thinking about expanding. The approach in this thesis was event organizing and mapping the process for the purpose of enhancing the process without changing the concept. The thesis was started by familiarizing with the background of Proyecto House and the BASC concept, their visions and values in interviews and by researching the existing material from the events of the previous year. After this, the theory basis was carefully studied and the framework was set to event organizing. The topics covered were project, project management, definition of experience, service design and concept. The thesis proceeded as a case study by investigating one select-ed event, a one year anniversary, and the organizing and implementation process of it. The com-missioner’s eight other events offered comparison ground. The empirical section of the thesis was conducted by taking advantage of multiple methods. The purpose was to create a comprehensive picture of BASC, from diverse perspectives. The methods chosen were customer and organizer interviews, conversations, questionnaires, benchmarking, SWOT, event brief, client personas, 8x8 method, implementation observation table, process observation and monitoring. The concept was detected to function on a strong competitive base. Customers have been satisfied with the service received and the pursued reputation is growing, which means that BASC’s vision has been achieved successfully. Problems found in the operation were closely related to the lack of organizing, communication, planning and role sharing. BASC organizers offer strong professional knowledge on the art side, but the lack of business knowledge was discovered to be a problem. The results of the study were analysed and an output for the organizers of BASC was drawn up. The output includes the analyses collected from the study, examples, some methods to be used in the future and solutions. The output will be used in the planning and implementing following events. It is meant to increase the level systematization in the organizing process to make the efficiency to grow and as a result it increases the profit....
